She was nominated for The End of the Affair (as was Ralph Fiennes, who lost to Kevin Spacey), and I confess I totally forgot that movie existed until JUST NOW, even though I've absolutely seen it -- as a massive Ralph Fiennes obsessive at this point in history, clearly I would not have missed it. It's quite good and very sad. Anyway: She looks great in this and should wear it again. Also, she lost to Annette Bening for American Beauty. Annette did not attend, but she did show up the following year? Maybe her date book was very confused.

SPEAKING OF, looking at this man, I'm sure you can understand why my collegiate shrine to Fiennes was so complete that it become famous on my college campus. (Literally, someone asked me about it THIS YEAR. Children, this was a time before the internet. I went to the library and procured color copies and used MICROFICHE. I did not, by the way, do this alone. My friend Katherine was doing the same thing for Don Henley. [This was in 1994, her Don Henley obsession was quite unique for the time period.]) He was just terribly dishy. Also: Remember when he dated Alex Kingston for TEN YEARS, then they finally got married, and then a few years later he had an affair with his Hamlet co-star Francesca Annis here (who left HER spouse of 23 years!), and then THEY broke up after 11 years together because he allegedly had another affair. I guess Ralph has a time limit. (I remember being very fascinated at the time that he ran off with a woman seventeen years his senior.) Her dress is great, but her styling is perplexing here.

NO, PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL! IT'S YOU KNOW WHO! (I know it's confusing because he has a nose and doesn't look like he's been living on the back of someone's head inside a turban for ages.)

I feel as if I've learned that Ralph Fiennes WILL take a photo with you at a party. (Though who wouldn't want a photo with Michael Caine, is holding a BAFTA in this photo despite having lost to Jude Law, who won for The Talented Mr. Ripley. Shenanigans!)

Just a reminder that the Caine family is VERY good-looking. Michael and Shakira have been married since 1973; he became enamoured of her when he saw her in a TV ad for Maxwell House.

PLEASE behold these infant children. FWIW, The Talented Mr Ripley is the height of Jude Law's dreaminess, and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it for this Inside Time. He's gorgeous, the Italian scenery is amazing, EVERYONE is good in it, and both Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett have fantastic wardrobes.

Jonny Lee Miller looks like he's rethinking all his life choices in this photo. (He was in the middle of getting divorced from Angelina Jolie at this time, so he probably WAS depressed.)

Spacey won for American Beauty; Cate lost for Talented Mr Ripley to Maggie Smith. (Also nominated in that category was Cameron Diaz, for Being John Malkovich, in which SHE is great, and I'm annoyed she didn't come to this either. Maybe people who already won or lost at the Oscars decided they didn't care about the BAFTAs, and that's why the BAFTAs are now before the Oscars. Actually, I suspect that is true.)

YES IT'S ARCHIE PANJABI. This was SO early in her career -- pre Bend It Like Beckham -- and she is there for a movie I haven't seen called East Is East, which won Best British Film that year. Maybe I should watch it!

Hugh Grant was really at his Hugh Grantiest in 2000. These two were not, as far as I know, dating at this moment in time -- he was in the middle of breaking up with Elizabeth Hurley and she was with Arpad Busson. I think this is just a photo of two very good-looking people standing next to one another

Kate. Why. You look like you're going to a conference of forensic scientists in a CBS procedural. (I actually know why. She is three months pregnant here. But I feel like there are other ways to obscure that, if you want to, than this!)

LITERALLY there is no point in winning a BAFTA if you're not going to do this with it.
