2000: The Mission Impossible 2 Premiere

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Tom's body language here is like he's about to introduce Nicole to everyone. WE KNOW HER, TOM. Also, prepare yourselves for a LOT of what we used to, in my day, call "going out tops" in this collection of looks. This is SUCH a going out top.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

She, for what it's worth, had JUST finished filming Moulin Rouge and may be gripping Tom so tightly because she really screwed up her knee on that film.

PEAK GOING OUT TOP. Peak!!

W'Ren Scott

L'Wren Scott was also in attendance, but this predates her fashion line; she did the costumes for Eyes Wide Shut just the year before and was very good friends with Nicole, so I think she is just there as a friend.

I just absolutely loved this photo.

Thandie Newton and Ol Parker

Thandie, in vintage Oscar de la Renta, looks nauseated here and when we get to the London premiere, you'll see it's because she is pregnant.

Colin Farrell and Matthew Davis

The original photographer captioned this "Colin Farrell and guest," even though Matthew Davis had been in some things by this point. (Legally Blonde came out the following year.) I suspect these two got into some trouble this evening in their matching spiky hair and matching leather jackets.

Denise Richards

Denise, of course, looking more or less the same. She was, at this point, the reigning Bond Girl, and a year away from agreeing one Mr. Charlie Sheen.

Portia De Rossi

Portia is the only person at this event other than Thandi who is wearing something that she could sincerely wear to a premiere today.

Kirsten Dunst

LIKE KIRSTEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING? (I must be honest: In 2000, this was perfectly festive!)

This was an A list premiere!

Colin Hanks, modeling the XXXXXXL clothing beloved by MANY men in 2000 -- especially those on Dawson's Creek, in which his date, Busy, was just about to get a part on. (They dated "in the 90s in college," per Wiki, but they look pretty together here.)

Congrats on looking relatively timeless, Dougray.

NON-congrats on looking very of the time, ladies! (Honestly, I love them both here. They really look like they're in a spin-off of Charlie's Angeles, which technically wouldn't come out for a couple of months yet.)

Gina Gershon

Remember what I said about going out tops?!

Alicia Witt

Ah, yes. The less common, but no less exciting, going out PANT.

Leelee Sobieski

Oh my god, Leelee.

Juliette Lewis

Meanwhile, Juliette Lewis has never looked more chipper.

Roseanne Barr

This photo was not captioned but I worked on a documentary series about Roseanne for many many moons and I can recognize her face anywhere.

Joey Lawrence

The obligatory "whoa." (I think that is his first wife, Michelle Vella, but she looks like Amy Smart here.)

Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof

Those shoes are of a time. (They, of course, are still married!

Fiona Apple and Paul Thomas Anderson

EVERYONE came to this!

Even Gloria Stuart was like, "why not?!"

Truly, everyone who Went Out in 2000 owned some version of this: Spangly top, tight black pants you could also wear to work with a different top, those very shoes.

Cheryl Tiegs

Meanwhile, Cheryl doesn't want to get chilly in the theatre.

This is AMAZING.

Russell Crowe, Thandie Newton, and Tom Cruise

Over to London, where Thandie has popped (and looks fab) and suddenly Russell Crowe has joined us. He is NOT in this movie so I don't know what he's doing in this photo? Just hanging out!

He of course is now married to Claire Forlani, who I hope would make him tuck in his shirt. (I do not blame his first wife here, however, for not succeeding on that front.) (She's a very successful casting director!)
