Tamyra Gray, Justin Guarini, Kelly Clarkson & Nikki McKibbin
These were, of course, the top four in American Idol's first season, which was a truly thrilling season of TV. Nikki recently passed away, and it's nice to see her smiling face here and remember what fun it was to meet these folks and experience AI for the first time. Every outfit here just SCREAMS "2002," from the skinny scarf on Tamyra Gray to both Kelly and Nikki's Dress Over Pants situations, and of course Justin's XXXXXL trousers. (Fun fact, Tamyra was just on Broadway in Once on This Island, so she's doing well.)
Erika Christensen
This is DEEPLY normal and, yes, this was in August in Los Angeles so it WAS hot. (Everyone who went for jeans was for sure miserable at this event.)
Jesse Bradford
No, I do not know what happened to Jesse Bradford's head, and also I too thought he was going to be more famous.
Naomi Watts
You might think, "WHAT is NAOMI WATTS doing at the premiere of SWIMFAN in THOSE JEANS??!!" and I DON'T KNOW. Naomi Watts was decently famous in 2002 -- Mulholland Drive came out the year before, although I guess The Ring wasn't due for a few more months. Maybe she loves trashy teen thrillers? Look -- who doesn't? (Listen, we all made really weird denim choices then.)
Jillian Barberie
!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, so Jillian here was the co-host of a local morning show in Los Angeles for YEARS that a LOT of people either normal-watched or hate-watched, and she also was the weather person for a LOT of NFL programming and also hosted Ex-Treme Dating, a terrible show everyone very much enjoyed when they were hungover. And if I recall correctly, she got fired from Good Day LA in a way that made me irritated. HOWEVER none of that explains what is happening here!!!!!! Jillian, I bless Past You for giving us this because it is hilarious.
Majandra Delfino
2002 was a time of trying to figure out how to expose our navels, however possible.
Jason Ritter
Look at this adorable baby face! I hope he still has this tee shirt.
Greg Louganis
Yes, some Legends of the Pool were invited to this event.
Janet Evans and Jerry O'Connell
Did Swimming Sweetheart Janet Evans DATE Jerry O'Connell, or just stand next to him here? We will never know!
Topher Grace
I do not think Topher will be annoyed if I note that he looks pretty stoned here.
I do not know who wore this nihilistic tank top and wherever she is, I suspect she's grateful not to be IDed here!
Shiri Appleby
Meanwhile, Shiri Appleby could legit wear this tomorrow with different shoes. Maybe even with those shoes!
Shaune Bagwell
Shaune, meanwhile, surely acknowledges that these jeans were OF THEIR TIME.
'SWIMFAN' FILM PREMIERE, LOS ANGELES, AMERICA - 19 AUG 2002
Yes, Kate Burton WAS in Swimfan. She looks as enjoyably no-nonsense here as I'd like to expect.
'SWIMFAN' FILM PREMIERE, LOS ANGELES, AMERICA - 19 AUG 2002
JOEY MAC WHAT ARE YOU DOING.
