I think of these as the Kate Middleton shots, from back when she'd get papped walking to and from work, and she'd have to look composed and wear something artfully noncontroversial. Not that Amal was under quite THAT level of pressure, but still. I wonder if Kate ever MISSES being papped walking casually down the street, given that I don't think she actually ever CAN walk casually down the street anymore.
The outfit is Paule Ka -- she wore a LOT of this label in the early days of Clooney, and obviously probably pre-Clooney -- and all I can think of is how wrinkly some of them look.
The Paule Ka is ALSO crinkly and a bit pedestrian -- it looks like it was made out of scrubs. It's the rare moment she appears to be wearing something wholly intended for someone else, possibly a small child. The VIBE is good,; I just think the actual choice of frock let her down a little. She pulls together the whole outfit with just enough polish and panache, though. You'll want a closer look at those shoes, too...
... because, yes, they are photonegatives of one another. And somehow on her it looks really great, and not twee or weird. They're by Figini Footwear, if anyone's curious.
I believe this pink coat is Balenciaga, and it's marvelous. Let's go to the shoes again though...
... I just don't know if shoes need to look like armrests. Or handles. Or... just no.
This is Ted Baker, The shoes are maybe by Hellfire Yikesface. I just somehow hate them with this, although from the ankles up she is perfection.
Pants by Stella McCartney, top by Zara, aesthetic by Vanessa Hudgens.
I like this side of her. It's fun and kind of punky.
See? PUUUNK. Well, on her feet, anyway. That cardigan is divine, though. It would be a great way to put away a bottle of wine on a cold night.
Another one that's not wholly my favorite, but it's utilitarian and probably worked well for a day of lawyering at her office.
Post-Clooney, she's been WAY into Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta, which this is. Here they are canoodling on the set of his Nespresso commercial. Fug Nation loves a canoodle, and I love what I can see of that dress.
This is D&G, for her first big red-carpet event with him. Hopefully not her last. It's... fine, but if you suspect she NABs, you are right. It might sit a little low and loose on her? But I applaud her restraint, actually, in not making this appearance any more of a Big F'ing Deal than it already was. Keeping it simple is not always bad. Clooney has had a rich history of dressing up his arm candy for big events, and this could pass as, "Yeah, I already OWNED this on my own terms, y'all," even if she didn't (I have no idea; Intern George doesn't tell me these things).
Taylor Swift wore this, too, and although she might have done it better, I still cherish it here. It's Oscar de la Renta and my heart convulses with sorrow that it will never be mine.
Wedding weekend! This McQueen looked so striking as she waited to catch the boat to the festivities.
But of course, it was a mullet dress. A very BEAUTIFUL one, but...
... it proves to me that perhaps she's not great at anticipating what to wear when she needs to step into and out of a boat while also keeping her labia private.
This is D&G, and it also includes The Hatbox of Dreams. She is a very glamorous referee in this indeed. I actually think this is PERFECT boatwear, so well played there.
HOWEVER. She had to get into that sucker in this Giambattista Valli, also, and... no. I know it's not as Artsy Fashion Important if you make it all the same length it is in the back, but YOU'RE ON A BOAT, Y'ALL, and you're a fancy lady lawyer, and... I just don't know that she needed to go to SUCH a microscopic length. Her legs are going to look long and hot and enviable no matter what.
She certainly makes it LOOK like she wasn't concerned about the boat-entering.
Gulp...
HUMAN SHIELD FOR THE WIN. (In my imagination, Intern George is signaling the photographer to stand exactly there to protect The Bits.)
And then, this. Yes, the pants are Stella; yes, their overlongness might be covering shoes I don't love (why not navy? Or another color?), but she looks FABULOUS in this.
Some people didn't think her Oscar de la Renta dress was special enough, but I have to say, I think it's lovely. What I DON'T like are the flowers, or at least, not in this photo. Clutched where they are, they're too easily mistaken for a part of the dress. They just blend right in and get lost, and at that point, why even bother?
What is Intern George's face doing in this photo? He looks weirdly 'shopped, or like he just sneezed.
This photo just makes me sniffly. Look how graceful and dapper Mr. de la Renta looks, when he was probably in some ill-health. I also love that someone packed a wind machine for this fitting.
Back to Oscar de la Renta, in which she also looks perfect. It's divine. And the little round suitcase/purse/briefcase thing is so chic it makes me want to punch it. I love this whole thing.
This is a label called Camillo Bona, and is from when she took her big work trip to Greece after the wedding. It's very comfy-looking.
I really like those shoes. This whole ensemble is easy-breezy. Do you think anything fazes her?
"Does anything faze me?" she wonders. "No. I'm not even worried about spilling on my Chanel. I am just cool, you see."
And now she's traveling in Dolce and Gabbana. NOT TOO SHABBY.
This cracks me up. To me, this face says, "I know there's a photographer RIGHT THERE but I'm not supposed to look at him, so just keep your eyes over there, Amal, and oh, shoot, nobody checked if there's anything in my teeth... I think I can feel something... get OFF of there..."
From the back. That coat seems dramatic in a way that I appreciate.
So, after that previous outing to Soho House, the paps decided Amal had a bump under her dress, so she and Clooney then went on a whole boatload of sushi nights to try and diffuse the rumors. This is from one such night. She love those camo jeans. I predict a run on them.
Shoes by Oscar de la Renta, and George... I learned from researching this that George wears his Casamigos Tequila shirt a LOT. It's his company with Rande Gerber, and... you'd think the boss would at least have a few DIFFERENT ones to wear when he's in Human Billboard mode.
That python coat is McQueen, and those legs are by SORCERY.
Let's finish with a big honking diamond, shall we? AS ALL HOLIDAYS SHOULD.
