This is for the Met Gala -- the infamous one whose theme was essentially China. While this dress looks more like that theme was Tarot, I do think it's appropriately grand for the occasion without being grandiose. She is also possibly the only age at which wearing this is not an eye roll.

She's also not letting it dominate her, which is no easy feat.

This one is a miss for me. It looks like the kind of thing a designer would produce if trying to be "modern," but without an actual sense of what that is.

I LOVE this, though. Even with the surplus of bangles everywhere (including around her neck). A Surplus of Bangles could also be the movie about the 80s band.

INSANITY. I mean, even she knows that, surely. What i applaud is that it does not show on her face. She's just cruising along in her expensive picnic blanket, chipper as can be. The minidress is gorgeous, also. Cut off the bedding and add a few inches, and it's stunning.

I mean, she looks like she caught Deep Sea Leg Hair Disease, or something. And yet... this is a reasonable example of something that really should be cracked out -- imagine it on, say, Rachel McAdams or Kerry Washington or Ariana Grande -- but which she is giving something approaching dignity.

How is it that I don't hate this boring old thing on her? It's the kind of outfit where you see someone in it, all cool and glam, and think, "Is it that easy?" It's not.

I don't know if it's the hair or the makeup, or both, that conspire to make her look like a different person to me. I SUSPECT it's probably something in her eye contouring? I don't know. Again, she has managed to pick an outfit that would look like a heinous craft-bin nightmare on anyone else, and made it look like it's found a soulmate. I don't like it, empirically, but she also does not look bad in it and is in fact ELEVATING it, which is a gift.

This is fully awful. It's just... it's like if you crossed Givenchy with the snow monster in Empire Strikes Back.

Honey, you are lovely. But it's a blouse and platforms and that's it. I wish she'd tucked that sucker into a sleek long skirt.

That suit is unusual, but she's working it so well that it leaves me FULLY able to concentrate on Matthew Morrison's lumberjacking career.

That might ALSO be some form of marine life? But she's so statuesque in it, and she just REFUSES to let this stuff beat her.

I have to tell you, I think this is fabulous on her, and I am REALLY not a proponent of formal bermuda shorts.

I think she looks smashing in the dress and then as if she smashed a woodland creature with her feet.

That is a lot froofier and girlier than we're used to seeing on her, but also, she again commits to it enough that it feels like fresh air.

It's seersucker skirt-pants. HOW is she carrying off SEERSUCKER SKIRT-PANTS?

Opinions were split on this; I actually really dislike it, personally. Well, except for the color. But the rest of it is pulling focus away from her, which is something that even SEERSUCKER SKIRT-PANTS didn't do. To me, this is as close as she's ever come to an outfits wearing her, and not the other way around.

The thing is, I also just don't connect with Self-Portrait as a fashion line. Although, despite it being a non-color and kind of shapeless, I actually prefer this to the one before it.

I would've done a different clutch, but that bracelet is PERFECTION with this simple and romantic gown. It is exactly the right amount of interest to add.

The shoes might be too daytime here. And we're coming CLOSE to her being overwhelmed? But she's keeping it on the correct side of the line with the short hair -- the first time we'd seen that, I think? -- and the deep lip.

Super loud, SUPER 80s, but super working of ruer.

Someone in the original entry's comments pointed out that this looks like she tucked a long tunic into a sheer skirt AND YET IT STILL WORKS. Such is the increasing power of Zendaya. I really do think that she's approaching Cate territory, because her missteps are fascinating, her chances are large, and her confidence is unparalleled.
