This was not an auspicious start. Jennifer co-hosted the Met Gala, and the best Dior could do for her was twin harnesses.

The sad thing is, you look at it from the side, and realize that pattern is gorgeous and could've made a really great proper gown.

I assume they're laughing about how someone at Dior clearly fell asleep while watching football on one TV and Pretty Woman on the other.

But then we get something VERY simple. Almost as if somebody say her down and said, "Make it easier on yourself. Aim... for the middle."

This is still aiming too low for my taste. The whole sleeve/bodice malarkey is SO clumsy and the satin is pulling every which way. It's that place where "design" and "construction fail" start to merge.

And here we have one that might trick you into thinking it's reasonable from the front.

But then from the side, it's just a smock with some chains. This one, and the aubergine one before it, were her more elaborate fails of the Mockingjay tour.

So, she hit "reset" again, and turned up in something as close to foolproof as she'd probably ever select. I don't actually think it looks very precisely fit from the front, perhaps, but the color is fine and at least she didn't punt and go all pearly pink on the makeup.

It's sexy from behind, though.

And then this just seems to say, "YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN MY OTHER OPTIONS. I HAD to go with the nightgown." That, or she's just lulling us into submission and intends to crash into the Golden Globes wearing something TOTALLY BANANAS. The thing is, she seems to suit the slinky mold. I just don't think this is a particularly well-cut version of that.

But, hey, again: sexy from the back. Maybe if she just never turns around?

She's had luck with Dior coat dresses in past years, so this type of thing makes sense. I think it looks nice on her; it's the head-styling that loses me. It looks like it was left over from whatever junket she did earlier in the day; it's not assertive enough hair OR makeup. But the overall atmosphere of Let's Not Aim So High So We Don't Miss As Badly still stands.
