Huh, I forgot this happened. (Just kidding. I DID NOT forget that I went to a royal wedding this year. I'm sure this was very exciting for Meghan and Harry, but it was also exciting FOR ME!)

This shot was AMAZING; the photographer, Danny Lawson, won Photo of the Year in the Royal Rota Photography competition this year.  I linked to our wedding coverage in the body of this post, and if you have time to kill, definitely go back and relive it; it was all very exciting.

ROMANCE!

Big year for Clare Waight Keller, too! I'll never forget -- we were walking into Windsor after filming our CNN spot on the morning of the wedding, and I saw a tweet that said, "the wedding gown was designed by Givenchy" and I said aloud to my phone, "that CANNOT be right." BUT IT WAS!

This photo -- shot by Yui Mok -- ALSO won an award, and rightly. The royal photographers do a great job day in and day out, but they always BRING IT for a wedding.

We saw a LOT of family portraits of the Brits after big events this year.

This was a great shot.

And this was a GREAT dress. Also: this tuxedo is excellent on Harry, and I started thinking about why his tux fits so well, while William's is currently so billowing and large, and once I cracked it, it's obvious. Harry got a new one for the wedding! Kate, please get Wills a new, better-fitting tux for 2019. Thank you.

Look at George, hiding there behind his father. He is really not a fan of giant crowds at the moment, which is both extremely normal and which will prove to be irritating for him as he gets older, I suspect.

Wedding the second!  Both of the bridal tiaras were a DREAM this year.

The back of Euj's dress is fantastic; I would NEVER had anticipated Peter Pilotto would get the nod and yet here we are.

And here are THEIR reception looks. (As I noted at the time, if you embiggen the photo and look behind Jack, Cressida Bonas is back there taking a selfie, which just cracks me up.)

Charlotte spent much of 2018 being an absolute hoot.

GEORGE IS SHOCKED.

I've basically broken this VERY LONG slideshow up into (very rough) segments arranged by person, that are only vaguely chronological, but apparently I stuck Wills and Kate's looks for Euj's wedding here, because...I don't know.

That's a lie. I do know. It's because I wanted to put the upper thigh squeeze up top. I didn't want you to have to wait for it.

But on to Meghan! As I noted, I'm not including everything Meghan wore this year, just looks that were interesting or memorable or that I thought we might want to revisit. I really loved this coat. (It's Burberry.) I also think this moment is when I decided that I LOVE Strathberry bags. IT'S JUST SO CUTE. 

This was the same day, just without coat. In taking a look back at the year as a whole for Meghan, she had some great pre-wedding oufits that I sort of forgot about.

But I'd NEVER forget this steller McQueen situation.

Nor this great Self-Portrait dress.

Nor this BOSS dress, which is very chic, though I am neutral on her shoes. (Appropriately.)

I think we can all agree that this look had too much going on. Buttons and straps and more straps and a belt and stripes and then more buckles on her shoes and two flapping sleeves. In addition to being visually really busy, this outfit looks like it's tough to move around in. Lessons learned!

But this is great. 

And this, also on their trip to Ireland, is ALSO great. (Meghan had a real green period prior to the wedding.) That bag is to die for. (It's ALSO Strathberry.)

This is well-done (it's Emilia Wickstead).

And I LOVED this -- it's Carolina Herrera.

I very much enjoyed this Club Monaco dress.

Meghan truly does adore a sleeveless trench dress; I think this one was my favorite of all of them.

The lady enjoys a green pencil skirt, okay?! (I do too.)

Kimmy Schmidt ALSO owns this coat, a fact that I am sure pleases both of them. 

I recall this hat being divisive, but I liked it. 

This was the same day, just later (it was ANZAC day, pre-wedding. It turns out my "vaguely chronological" sorting here was VERY VAGUE INDEED). I liked this a lot.

I'll always enjoy a cape-dress.

This is perhaps my favorite of Meghan's post-wedding Givenchys. (This was in June, at the RAF's 100th anniversary.)

This was at Prince Louis's christening, and it's Ralph Lauren, who Meghan wears occasionally and ought to (I think) wear more often. 

This was at the Hamilton performance that benefited Sentebale, Harry's charity, and it's dishy!

This was at Trooping The Colour right after the wedding -- it's Carolina Herrera, and in retrospect, I think it's pretty perfect. The fit here looks really good. (A lot of people had a variety of hissyfits -- not here, in general -- about it being ever so vaguely off-the-shoulder, but I didn't and don't think that's a big deal.)

This is Oscar de la Renta, and I still think it's pretty overwhelming on her. I get what she was going for -- soft, floral, very English Summer Wedding -- but I think it missed the mark.

Meghan! I long for a bracelet!

This was a good hat -- and Ascot is, after all, the best place to wear a good hat.

You can revisit ALL of Harry and Meghan's tour of Australia Etc here, if you like, but I picked some highlights for the next few slides. In cases where she wore two items that were super similar, I chose the one I personally preferred. Like, I think this is very crisp and chic.

Everyone loves a shirtdress and by "everyone," I do mean Meghan. (And me.)

She also loves what I like to call A Dress With a Flap Attached.

This was a cute casual moment (and nice of her to wear her friend Serena Williams's blazer).

STRIPES! Although I do think this dress is too long. It benefits by being worn next to those other outfits (which are eccentric on purpose, but make for a confusing photo taken out of context).

This was quite unimpeachable.

I love these sunglasses.

Another very successful casual look -- for both of them, in fact. This photo also benefits from the fact that Harry is actually looking up in it, and not down at the ground the way he is in the previous several shots. (My theory is that Harry had a nightmare before they left that he tripped and dramatically wiped out in front of hundreds of photographers and he got paranoid about his footfalls. Either that, or I accidentally just picked photos where Meghan looked good and didn't pay any attention to Harry.)

This gown was MAJOR, and she looks great in it. (It's by Safiyaa.)

And this, the work of Jason Wu, was a high point.

This was the dress that caused such a furor when people noticed that it still had the tag attached. It's a shame, because as a whole, I like it as a garment. (Also, like, forgetting to remove a tag is hardly a heinous crime -- this tour was really a tough schedule and it's likely that people just got tired. Harry and Meghan are planning a trip to the US next year, after the baby is born, and I suspect they'll be doing fewer engagements, both because this one was too jam-packed, and because of the baby.)

Glam! I wish she had MORE JEWELS on with this, but when don't I wish that?

Here's a little welcome bit of pattern! (I just noticed this is called "wallpaper floral" by the brand, so no wonder I like it.)

PERFECT in Oscar de la Renta. This gown is such a swoon of a dress.

I very much liked this Boss dress, and I hope she wears it again. We only got to enjoy it for like ten minutes when she got on a plane.

I'm always going to love a patterned trench.

This Gabriela Hearst dress was totally nice and chic, but I couldn't resist running this phooto again, even though you can't see her entire outfit.

This Antonia Berardi might be one of the few high-low hems I like.

This Givenchy skirt is GORGEOUS -- even if it did maybe go a bit sheer on her in direct sunlight (I'm not still sure that wasn't just an optical illusion).

Ah, young love amid large trees...

I liked this, but I think I'm the only person alive who did. Y'all HATED it.

But I think we're in agreement that this Givenchy was ACES. What a way to close out the year.

I couldn't resist seguing from Meghan to Kate via a family photo that so perfectly featured the Cambridge kidlets.

I forgot that either of these women wore either of these dresses, but they're BOTH good.

Hey! Wills and Kate went to Sweden and Norway this year! It feels like that happened two hundred years ago.

Said trip was replete with scarves.

I love this coat on Kate, but she and Victoria could not clash more powerfully than they do here. (A look back at the most memorable shenanigans of the European royals is running tomorrow, don't worry.)

No one here looks great.

Kate looks better here, but Victoria looks worse?  Like, markedly worse. This might be one of the worst things Victoria has ever worn.

BEHOLD the formal cape-caftan! The cafetan! It's glorious.

Always here for a fur hat.

AND a festive parka.

Kate's coat wardrobe really worked overtime this year.

Aw. I cannot resist getting to meet tiny babies. I wonder if Harry and Meghan are going to do the big Hospital Steps Reveal. Andrew and Fergie did, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

More babies -- and the first of Kate's Massive Tudor Headbands, in a year that brought more of them than I would have anticipated.

This was a fun outing. (I appreciate how slightly thematic both Meghan and Kate look for Wimbledon.)

Everyone in sunglasses! (Whatever Billie Jean King is thinking about back there has her very cross.)

This was a very zingy Erdem -- and it felt very fashion-y on Kate.

We also saw some excellent re-wears on Kate this year. I've always loved this dress.

And this great Catherine Walker coat. (The red twin of which we also just spied at Christmas.)

And, of course, this LEGENDARY GOWN. I stan a Jenny Packham.

This McQueen gown was also....a real experience. A...moment in, uh, time.

This is such a perfect day-dress.

And Charlotte's tremendously sassy first-day-of-school snap. "Whee!" she's thinking, "FINALLY I'm being sent somewhere that has BUNSEN BURNERS."

Plus these photos that even our photo house called "incredibly cute" in Informative Caption. Informative Caption hardly EVER takes a stance like that.

It's true, though. It's objective fact.

There were SHENANIGANS at this year's Trooping the Colour. (Wills looks stern here, but he's laughing at them in the next shot in this series.)

On the family front, on the whole, it seems like 2018 was a pretty good year -- knock on wood, though, as we've got a week left.

This might be the best Camilla's ever looked.

Though I also enjoyed that time she draped herself in velvet.

And the time she and Judi Dench had ice cream together. (You should also just assume that I had about 76 photos of her and Charles drinking and/or snacking their way around the world, as this is in fact the case.)

Spoiler: Princess Eugenie had a rather stylish year.

Leather pants!

She and Bea both went slightly low key for Harry and Meghan's wedding, which was...well advised.

I LOVED this Easter Sunday look. (It is Oscar de la Renta.)
