(Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for MTV) Shakira's performance was very Shakira! Fun, high-energy, almost certainly lip-synced because the amount of cardio involved is punishing (THIS IS OKAY!), lots of fringe, earworming-inducing. Shakira is always highly enjoyable. ## Fall Out Boy ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1661459916-1694629198-scaled.jpg) Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy perform onstage in this image released on September 12, 2023 at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Bryan Bedder/Variety via Getty Images) I do not know what Patrick Stump is doing lately but I DO want to know what Pete Wentz is privately texting his friends about it. (I truly believe Patrick Stump should just become the Broadway star his heart wants him to be THIS IS NOT SHADE I LOVE MUSICALS.) ## Olivia Rodrigo ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677144476-1694628034-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Olivia Rodrigo performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) In the car the other day, listening to the radio, I thought, "I'm so glad the teens of today have Olivia to wail along with and let out all their feelings." I mean that sincerely! She's so talented. ## Demi Lovato ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677189623-1694628070.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Demi Lovato performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for MTV) I'm enjoying Demi's rock phrase and also think she looks great here. ## Cardi B ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1661357515-1694627987.jpg) Cardi B at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Variety via Getty Images) Cardi looked SO CUTE in this performance. ## Megan Thee Stallion ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677062332-1694628001.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Megan Thee Stallion performs onstage the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images for MTV) As did Megan. I don't know if the actual performance stuck with me as much as my big takeaway of "Wow, they look SO CUTE!" ## Anitta ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677120493-1694628016-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Anitta performs onstage the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images for MTV) I feel like none of these performances stuck with me, but this looks like a Trapper Keeper come to life. ## Anitta ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677176061-1694628052-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Anitta accepts the Best Latin award for "Funk Rave" onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images for MTV) I sincerely think she wore this as a salute to Shakira because it just feels to me like something Shakira would wear? Is that nuts? Anyway, this is the part of the slideshow where I note that Anitta is SO PRETTY, I assume L'Oreal has come calling for brand ambassadorships. ## Soobin, Anitta and Beomgyu ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677729817-1694628324.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Soobin, Anitta and Beomgyu perform onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for MTV) Anitta also did a collaboration with TOMORROW X TOGETHER that they premiered on the telecast. Both of these jackets are welcome in my closet. ## Doja Cat ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677192515-1694628084-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Doja Cat performs onstage the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for MTV) One of my favorite comments on the liveblog was when one of you said you knew this wasn't the point, but you wanted to know where Doja Cat got her button down. ## Nicki Minaj ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677203684-1694628103-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Nicki Minaj performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) The best part of this snap is that it looks like Nicki is doing this from the prow of a boat. ## Nicki Minaj ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677292571-1694628199.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Nicki Minaj attends the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) As far as her hosting goes, it was....adequate? There wasn't a lot of hosting to DO. ## Diddy ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677220837-1694628120-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Diddy performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for MTV) I do think Diddy's performance was excellent and who doesn't love a shiny red look? ## Tiffany Haddish ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677223549-1694628138.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Tiffany Haddish speaks onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for MTV) We learned last night that Tiffany has a single dropping and I don't THINK this is a bit? As I said on the chat: I fear the actors strike is going to lead to a LOT of perhaps il-advised musical projects while actors are bored. ## Thalía and Fat Joe ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677266963-1694628171.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Thalía and Fat Joe speak onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for MTV) Both of these people look, frankly, good. ## Rita Ora and Taika Waititi ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677269318-1694628185.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Rita Ora and Taika Waititi attend the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) In case you were wondering if Taika made an appearance. He did, in fashion jammies. ## Shakira and Karol G ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677312443-1694628213.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Shakira and Karol G attend the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) Shakira looks Shakira-y; Karol G's dress is objectively wild but perhaps -- go with me here -- perfect for the occasion? ## Karol G ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677354149-1694628227-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Karol G performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for MTV) I did find this performance oddly flat, for all the production values. I say this as someone who enjoys Karol G! I do love plaid. ## Chance Combs and Mary J. Blige ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677370205-1694628246.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Chance Combs and Mary J. Blige perform onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Johnny Nunez/Getty Images for MTV) Mary J has arrived in an outfit much like she always wears -- although often with boots -- and Chance Combs is Diddy's daughter and she is SO CUTE. ## Saweetie ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677375112-1694628260.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Saweetie speaks onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for MTV) Saweetie sincerely almost always amuses. This has a real Disney Gone Awry vibe. ## Chloe Bailey and Halle Bailey ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677380701-1694628274.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Chloe Bailey and Halle Bailey speak onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for MTV) This might be one of my favorite things Halle has worn; does she have a new stylist? They look collectively lovely anyway. ## Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677669677-1694628290-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick perform onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for MTV) Is that a giant luggage tag?!?! ## DMC, Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J and Doug E. Fresh ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1678489980-1694628338-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) DMC, Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J and Doug E. Fresh perform onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images for MTV) What you can't tell here is that LL's entire outfit is low-key glittery and it's very entertaining. ## Stray Kids ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1678498893-1694628356-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Stray Kids performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for MTV) This was dramatic and fun. As I texted to Heather during this performance, these nice young men can really dance! ## Shannon Leto and Jared Leto ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1677705864-1694628308-scaled.jpg) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Shannon Leto and Jared Leto speak onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images for MTV) And then Jared Leto appeared. [Are The VMAs Over?
