Larry Hagman

Look how sassy! The only thing I love more than J.R. Ewing might be a J.R. Ewing pointing and/or giving finger guns.

Major Nelson

But I realize that many of you knew him first from I Dream Of Jeannie. I didn't really watch that very much -- from moving around I ended up missing a lot of those shows, although we DID get Bewitched on Channel 4, thank God -- but I couldn't leave it out altogether. He was so young! And an ASTRONAUT. I wish HE'D been in Space Camp.

JR and Sue Ellen

Look how happy these two crazy kids were. For thirty seconds.

JR and Sue Ellen

Hagman had a seriously jaunty side.

Hagman in lederhosen! It's only the best thing ever.

And then WHAT. This is... an outfit. Let's not get into a PETA debate over the hat, please. Yes, it appears to have a face (which I only just noticed). Yes, I am hoping it is somehow fake. But the man is dead, and this picture is From A Different Time. Bygones. Instead let's just marvel at pairing that hat with a mustard-colored fringe coat and a motorcycle, and agree that Larry Hagman was a rare bird.

Those GLASSES. YES.

I have no idea what that is he's proudly selling, but I will take ten of them in whatever colors are left.

JR Ewing

And then we got ten delicious fresh episodes of J.R. scheming, and were reintroduced to the majesty of those eyebrows. I am so pleased he got the chance to wow a whole new generation of people -- I mean, this guy delivered a master class each week on How It's Done. He was sassy, he was glib, he was hurt, he was poignant, and he was J.R.

Happy trails, good sir.

A Too-Brief GFY Tribute: RIP, Larry Hagman
As soon as I learned to read music, my piano teacher asked me what song I'd like to try first. My first two choices were, in this order, the themes to "Dallas" and "Dynasty." (And bless her, she wrote them out for me.) Living in England at that time, we tended to devour any U.S. television shows we got, but Dallas and Dynasty were the big dogs: If I missed them, I taped them. Those people were so familiar to me. So the return of J.R. Ewing to TV was one of the most welcome and awesome things ever, and the death of Larry Hagman this weekend was actually viscerally distressing. Hooray for us all that we got the gift of ten more episodes -- plus however many new ones he'd already shot -- of J.R.'s sassy one-liners and delectable scheming, but it means we'll all feel the loss even more. AND Bobby and Sue Ellen were apparently at his deathbed with his family. Sniffle. Anyway, Liz & Dick kind of sucked the time away this weekend, but we wanted to throw together at least a QUICK tribute to Larry Hagman, to wish him well as he heads up to the pearly gates and commences smiting that snake Cliff Barnes. For a CLASSIC J.R. and Sue Ellen verbal spat, click here -- the music cue right before J.R. delivers his exit line is hilarious. And for a montage of J.R. moments that's long but also essential, click here. "What do you like in your coffee?" "BOURBON." Yes sir. [Photos: Getty, WENN]
