Carrie Underwood

The flowers are nice, and the bodice is pretty... and yet something about this just looks off to me. What IS it? Can she just not carry that much dress? Should some people ALWAYS stick to metallics? And yet, I think if you plugged this onto Taylor Swift's body, we'd be giving her a standing ovation for doing something atypical and carrying it off. So, maybe my theory is right, which is...

... that this is ENTIRELY the wrong hair. It's worse in the last photo, but here you can still see that it's kind of a bushy flyaway mess, and with that very big and bold pattern, her face is getting completely lost. (Also, she looks tired, and as if she's smiling through trying not to barf. So if she turns up pregnant in a couple months, you heard it here first. If it turns out she's just fatigued and ate some bad cheese, well, you heard it here first.)

This is... fine. A bit like she's the young widow who may have murdered her husband, which for all I know is also what her song is about. It feels like -- with the exception of the dress she turned into a giant screen -- Carrie Underwood no longer performs without the aid of a smoke machine. Is that true? I like to think she carries one in her purse at all times, so that she does nothing -- NOTHING -- without smoke. Going to the produce section? Smoke machine. Trying on bras? Smoke machine. Refilling her smoke machine? Smoke machine.

ACM Awards Well Chosen: Carrie Underwood
I say "well chosen" instead of "well played" because, while I love this, I am not entirely sure the two of them were M.F.E.O. Which is to say, "made for each other," which, if you have ever seen Sleepless in Seattle, you probably cannot read without seeing in your mind's eye the expression of nauseated shock on Meg Ryan's face while she translates it thusly from a letter she believes Tom Hanks wrote. Good times. [Photos: Getty]
