Naomi Osaka

Kinlo is her skincare brand, and I think it's interesting (in a good way) that Nike is letting her put that stamp on their apparel too. I like the colorful kit here...

... and the custom shoes. I didn't understand why they were orange with this outfit, but then I read that they're a tribute to the time she was at the Open and a butterfly landed on her face and she basically paused the match to try and help it to safety.

But of COURSE I have a close-up! I would honestly buy those. (They're not for sale yet but they are apparently a version of her branded Nike shoe that IS for sale.)

Coco Gauff

Was everyone having a mind meld? This is New Balance but uses much of the same color story that Naomi's Nike gear does. Her ombre shoes are cool.

Here's a better look. I'm sad that Coco is out in the singles, but she starts Doubles on Wednesday so at least she's not on a plane already.

Leylah Annie Fernandez

I'm the saddest about Leylah losing, but she fell to a surprise Aussie contender and WHAT a thrill that must have been for Maddison Inglis! I sincerely thought I downloaded her photo but I appear not to have. Anyway, Leylah looks totally fine, and I'm sure it's fun not to have the exact same sponsor as half the rest of the tour because then you do sort of feel like it's yours alone. (Also this pic was taken by a Simon Baker, and I like to imagine Noted Aussie Actor Simon Baker picking up freelance photog work because things are Covid-slow.)

Ash Barty

For a second, in the tiny wee thumbnail, I thought this was a newspaper-themed ensemble. It is not. Maybe next time.

Heather Watson

This is another option from New Balance, and I also like it. While we're here... y'all know I am not a fan of Ralph Lauren's work for the Wimbledon court staff, but this cannot be much better. I don't know that I think they need to wear distracting things?

Misaki Doi

And, the rainbow is available in a vertical form!

Lesia Tsurenko

I'm never mad at orange.

Sofia Kenin

This one is cute, too.

Panna Udvardy

And this! Dylan would love all this orange.

Elina Svitolina

"Maybe I should look into soccer."

Sloane Stephens

Sloane lost a wild one to Emma Raducanu -- it was 0-6, 6-2, 1-6, from Sloane's POV -- and I'm sad they drew each other, because whoever lost that would have been someone who could conceivably go deep in this thing. But Sloane JUST got married so I'm impressed she even felt like hauling ass to Australia. Maybe they turned it into a Honeymoon. It IS good weather for lounging together with one's beloved.

Emma Raducanu

I hope she's able to enjoy this -- she seems to be, but of course everyone is like THE EYES OF THE TENNIS WORLD ARE UPON THEE, LITTLE ONE, PROVE THY WORTHINESS, OR AT LEAST THAT THOU DIDST NOT GET OVERLY DAZZLED BY THY NEW LIFE WEARING DIOR TO FANCY PARTIES, and that sucks because as we all know a person can be a badass at what they do and STILL sometimes wear Dior to a party. I find her kit a little boring, to be honest. She and Sloane and Svitolina got, I guess, Premium Different Colorways of Nike's stuff...

Donna Vekic

First, I think these two separates look terrible together, and second, WHAT is the color-blocking on this skirt, and ALSO WHAT is with the hem of the shirt? Is that cut on the diagonal somehow? And ALSO ALSO what is this skirt in general?!?

It has a weird pseudo-slit and the pleats look like fringe? Go home, Nike, you're drunk.

Madison Keys

The dress version is better.

Vika Azarenka

Although, maybe it wouldn't have killed them to do matching burgundy underwear, so that when this happens it's not quite so HELLO UNDERWEAR. Maybe they did and Vika just mixed and matched them.

Marta Kostyuk

There is also this sleeveless version, and we get THAT SKIRT again.

Garbine Muguruza

Oooh, I like this. Bondi blue, baby!

Barbora Krejcikova

This is good too. Seriously, what was Nike smoking?

Camila Giorgi

The back of her top was also pink, and her shorts under the skirt were purple (it might be a bodysuit). It all worked better than it looks in the photos.

Dayana Yastremska

I feel like Athleta used to make that as a swim skirt.

Andrea Petkovic

I call this the Sno Cone Collection.

Alison Riske

I like the idea here, but the top seems sort of stretched out, like she's been working it for a few seasons now or something.

Diane Parry

Her shoes coordinate! It's always such a nice touch when it doesn't feel like the sponsors stopped short of caring about their feet. The top feels very Monet at Giverny to me.

Maria Sakkari

I keep calling her Iron Chef Sakkari in my head, and I think it's because the original Iron Chef had an Iron Chef Sakai and I've been thinking a lot about how much I miss OG Iron Chef.

Kirsten Flipkens

I love a sunglasses sighting. I didn't know it was allowed. Maybe she's just warming up?

Fiona Ferro

Repping Lacoste now that Djoker is out.

Arianne Hartono

She's clearly also Nike, but just getting the non-custom stuff, I guess? I'm sure there are tiers, loosely based on ranking and longevity.

Rafa Nadal

Rafa did not bust out the sleeveless tops, and for that I am sad, but I LOVE that fuchsia and turquoise on him.

There are apparently a fair few shadows on the court, because the photographers had a lot of fun with dramatic photos.

Daniel Altmaier

Pin stripes (sort of)! I'm here for it.

Sebastian Korda

I thought the stripes on his were differently colored, but I think maybe it's the same shirt and the light is the variable?

Oscar Otte

His is obviously Smoke Monster themed because he's been bingeing Lost.

Feliciano Lopez

"That's right, COME AT ME. BRO."

Gael Monfils

"Biker bar, but make it tennis."

Aslan Karatsev

I love a good blood splatter outfit.

Federico Coria

These options, with the pink and blue shorts, look like a gender reveal gone crazy.

Alexander Zverev

I regret to inform you that I like this. Sigh.

Liam Broady

But THIS is a real swing. It's kind of awesome? Between the artsy duds and his bushy but manicured beard, I feel that he is really leaning into the aesthetics of it all.

Salvatore Caruso

That's a great pattern, too.

Kevin Anderson

Sure!

Reilly Opelka

This is a real hockey playoff headsuit right here.

Yannick Hanfmann

"My wife calls me Tennis Jamie Dornan, and that is 50 Shades of Okay By Me."

Thanasi Kokkinakis

"They call ME Undercrackers McGee."

Just in case you needed a close-up. When he manspreads, they look so perilous.

Daniil Medvedev

"Do you like me? Signal: yes, no, so-so."

Stefanos Tsitsipas

This shirt looks kind of like one or the other side of him is leaking fluid. Parenthetically, the guy who anchors SportsCentre (yep) up here always says his name with like a slightly hissing whispery sound -- "SsssIITsipasssssss" -- and that is now how I say it too. I can't help it.

Botic van de Zandschulp

I want to say his name forever. Also that green is jazzy.

Taro Daniel

I'm always glad to see a deep teal.

Nick Kyrgios

Is it a shirt, or is it a tank top over a tee? He doesn't care and can't figure out why we do either.

Ugo Humbert

"AAAAAH HOLY SHIT I HAVE A WHOLE OTHER HAND I COULD BE USING WHAAAAT."

Marco Trungelliti

Why keep one eye on the ball, when you can keep FOUR.

Benoit Paire

He seriously looks like he's just wearing whatever he had in his house.

Andy Murray

Sir Andrew of House Murray looks very respectable.

"Close call. Is the machine sassing me? I think it's sassing me."

Djoker

WOMP-WOMMMMMP.

Drama Down Under: The Open Begins, Without Djokovic and With Some Upsets

And an upset Djokovic, really.
