Australian Open 2023

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna won in a darker-blue version of the pattern. I really like it, even though it also looks like what I imagine I would see if someone clocked me over the head. Or if I looked under a microscope at some fluorescent organisms trying to mate.

Wang Xiyu

This is the lighter teal version. Also, I enjoy the white sneakers with the heels dipped in coordinating colors.

Bianca Andreescu

Bianca left on the quarter-zip.

Victoria Azarenka

Vika made waves by wearing shorts and a tank, so that it looks a bit like a onesie. It is... a LOT this way. I think I prefer the pattern as one of the halves but not the whole?

"What are you TALKING ABOUT? FULL-BODY MIGRAINE AURAS ARE THE FUTURE. How am I the only one that sees this?"

Frances Tiafoe

"You're NOT the only one." Frances snagged a jazzy shoe with it, too. At first I DID think this was a onesie, but then I found a version I could zoom in on, and it is a shirt and shorts. Surely Tiafoe will graduate to tennis rompers soon enough?

Elena Rybakina

The women's final was just FULL of psychedelic moments. This is like someone did a funky colorization of a photo under the sea.

Maria Sakkari

This version looks more like "Influencer In Athleisure."

Stefanos Tsitsipas

The shorts work well on Stefanos here.

Felix Auger-Aliassime

I am not sure the shirt is as good. It's the same brand, but I can't tell if the print is quite identical? It's more intense on FAA. I enjoy aspects of it, but it might veer into weird into weird airbrush art. I keep thinking I can see tigers or other felines. CAN I?

Karolina Pliskova

This isn't so much a pattern, as "It was white until I went ham on the breakfast fruit plate," but I'm not mad at it.

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz

I think this is from the doubles tourney, which I didn't get to watch at ALL, so I'm sure I missed a bunch. But I'm really into the pattern work. Honestly, all of this multicolored stuff was a big, buzzy highlight.

Jelena Ostapenko

"POINT OF ORDER, a person does not need a pattern to get people talking."

Danielle Collins

Danielle kept it really simple. She is not one for frills, methinks.

Leylah-Annie Fernandez

I know she's celebrating a good point, but I like to think she's imagining decking the person who designed her a stomach bib.

Tamara Zidansek

I like green and red, but I'm not sure THAT green works with THAT red. I get not wanting it to feel like Christmas, though.

Magda Linette

The green stands better alone.

Ons Jabeur

I like all her blues. And then she got THE blues, presumably, as she bowed out early.

Mackenzie McDonald

The shirt is good, but the hat has a penguin on it, which is EXCELLENT.

Kateryna Baindl

There are a few quarter-zips this season so far. Did I just not notice them before, or is it new?

Dan Evans

See? More!

Oh, Rafa. My delightful citrus squeeze. Rest up for the French, mon petit.

Coco Gauff

I do not get the side-ab keyhole here.

Lin Zhu

Then again, maybe keyholes are hot for Southern Hemisphere Summer.

Kimberley Zimmermann

"BARBIECORE SMASH!"

Donna Vekic

"Oh no, I didn't even THINK about Barbiecore."

Head-to-toe lavender! He's dressed as a lingerie-drawer sachet and I love it.

Jannik Sinner

"My name is SINNER and SOMEONE ELSE is dressed as a lingerie drawer sachet? I KNEW I should have gone monochrome."

Daniil Medvedev

"It's so hot here. I should have cut along the lines like the shirt says."

"I don't need your fancy sponsors, or your sunscreen that vanishes into your face, or even a racket in my hand, son. I just need a six of Bud and I'm good."

Holger Rune

I don't know how the yellow really fits in here, but the shorts and accessories are aces.

Seb Korda

Okay, never mind, the yellow looks worse with just the white shorts. Much more boring. I assume Holger Rune saw this and went rogue.

Jessica Pegula

"My family owns the freaking BILLS and this is the best I can get?!?"

Karen Khachanov

Tennis Hemsworth kept it simple again.

Jiri Lehecka

"How does he do that? I HATE when my racket gets in the way of me being able to watch this match."

Andrey Rublev

"What? They didn't MAKE blue-heeled shoes! I was out of choices!"

Tommy Paul

I love the retro look of the tee, and the snazz along the collar.

Sigh. I hate to admit it, but this is very slick.

I don't like the blue shirt version as well, but it's still decent. SIGH. He's so good; I wish I could get excited about him/for him anymore, but alas.

Sabalenka

MEANWHILE! I have not seen any proof that they make them men do silly shoots with their trophies, but that may be because I haven't dug for it yet. Sabalenka, though, had to put on a pink dress and pose with it in a park. I hate the shoes with it. And the dress... I don't know if it should exist outside Royal Ascot with an absurd hat atop it.

And then she... snuggled up with it?

Ah, yes, traditional Australian... lake punting? (Maybe this IS a tradition in Australia and I just don't know it.) Ash Barty took like three identical pictures on a patio last year. I'm glad Aryna got to have some fun, but this is hilariously odd to me.
