I just watched her win her second-round match as I type this, and she was so funny talking about how annoyed she was to lose at the US Open in "my best outfit." But I like the sunflowers! I think they're perfect.

I thought the details on her shoes were a bee, somehow, but no -- they're little sunflower details too.

It's not as elaborate as a whole petticoat or whatever, but that just makes the accents more effective.
Madison Keys

But seriously, what is this? Why?

At first I thought Nike just didn't build a supportive dress and it forced her to throw a bra on over it for... some unknown reason... but then I noticed that she ALSO seems to have one under it, AND apparently that's just how they made this. I know ballet dancers layer like this all the time, but it looks clunky to me here.
Aryna Sabalenka

See? Yikes. Unless this was everyone's solution to the same problem and Nike had to mass-produce some coordinating... outer bras. But why OUTER bras?
Mirra Andreeva
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 12: Mirra Andreeva applauds fans after the victory against Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in their Women's Singles First Round match during day one of the 2025 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 12, 2025 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Kelly Defina/Getty Images)
Apparently I was so aghast that I downloaded way too many photos of this outfit. Mirra KIND OF looks sort of like Ballracket Courtbelter, in case she ever wants to get into acting and he needs someone to play his child.
Katie Boulter

This is just so much SANER. And cuter!
Emma Raducanu

How cute is her little flippy pleated skirt? Nike, you are not TOTALLY useless. Why are you giving Maddie Keys and freaking SABALENKA your weirdest?
Qinwen Zhang

Same note! That skirt is classic!
Destanee Aiava

You know what else is deranged? THIS DESIGN. Why did they paint a bikini bottom shape onto this? Why would you do this to a person? Who signed off on this use of shapes?!? [Note: Apparently she's buying vintage outfits off eBay and this was first worn by Caroline Wozniacki. My point still stands: Why would anyone design this? But I love the sustainability from Destanee.]

Even she is clearly furious about it!!!
Coco Gauff

That LOOKS like her skirt has warts, but it's just the folds and shadows, I think. But nothing excuses the bizarre uneven design that looks like she's stapled a satchel to her crotch.

And the top is very Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. I have to think she's involved in SOME of the design choices for her custom gear? If not, I hope she consistently sends pointed feedback to the New Balance team.
Elena Rybakina

This is SO lively and great.
Leylah Fernandez

She lost, so apparently her posture here was warranted. At least her outfit is not too wacky.
Sofia Kenin

I always like a wacky pattern, so I don't hate this.
Ajla Tomljanovic

I think Iga needs colorful kicks to go with this.
Dayana Yastremska

And this is really crisp.
Maria Sakkari

That's a very Valentine's color combo. Poor Sakkari got bounced in round one AGAIN; she's had a really rough major season.
Rebecca Marino

My nitpicky note here is that I think the band on the hem of the skirt doesn't need to look different than the rest of it.
Anca Todoni

I also appreciate this version, and wonder anew -- as I do every year -- how tennis players don't dislocate their elbows.
Carlos Alcaraz

Nick Kyrgios

His return to the court at home did not go well. I also don't like the basketball jersey cut. I can't tell if it's that over a t-shirt, or if it's one shirt and just printed that way.
Joao Fonseca, Andrey Rublev

This almost looks like soccer kit.
Daniil Medvedev

He won a five-setter in round one AND threw a tantrum that involved smacking the net and possibly intentionally destroying the camera they put there. Oh, Daniil. Keep your cool.
Alex de Minaur
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 14: Alex de Minaur of Australia celebrates a point against Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the Men's Singles First Round match during day three of the 2025 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 14, 2025 in Melbourne, Australia. Okay, he has FOUR colors to choose from here so that the shoes will look slick, and he has RED?
Arthur Fils

I just wanted to say "Botic van de Zandschulp," and that expression is what my face does when I am trying to pronounce it correctly.
Kei Nishikori

Forget the outfit -- look how jacked his racket is! He totally snapped his strings mid-rally.
Reilly Opelka

I just watched the big guy lose his second round match, which was a bummer. I appreciate that he wore a pink hat and pink kicks that had NOTHING to do with the rest of his outfit but which tried at least to match each other.
Jannik Sinner
