LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - APRIL 11: Emerald Fennell winner of best original screenplay and outstanding British film for "Promising Young Woman" is seen in her award show look for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2021 on April 11, 2021 in London, United Kingdom. Due to COVID-19 restrictions nominees will be attending virtually alongside a virtual audience. (Photo by Zoe McConnell/via Getty Images)
Emerald has been writing humorous characterizations of her outfits on Twitter -- turns out I DO like fennel, but only if you add the extra L -- and of this she said, "So excited to release my album of Westlife Piano covers." (Westlife is an Irish boy band from the late 90s/aughts.) Brilliant. I was thinking it looks like Emerald Fennell playing Busy Philipps who is playing Miss Havisham in a complex one-woman show about the reclusive bride learning to play the collected melodic works of Taylor Swift. Emerald's is much more succinct.

Also, her reaction to winning is AMAZING. Apparently there was about 15 seconds of shrieking from everyone in her apartment before she gave her speech. I love this. It's good to be psyched!

Phoebe here missed what would've been a year of BIG red-carpet exposure, thanks to Bridgerton, because of Covid. Accordingly I feel like she's still a little green, and at sixes and sevens with what to do with her hands? (I say this with great sympathy, as I NEVER know.) Here, I THINK she's awkwardly trying to make sure people see the loaner ring?

Same here, but it comes off like she has a lot of aches and pains. It's a Before shot in an Advil ad.

And this just looks like she studied the collective works of America's Next Top Model and maybe some Coco Rocha. It doesn't look like a comfortable or natural pose, but it DOES look like something you'd see Coco do on a magazine cover overseas. The dress itself is sort of bland, so I'm glad she gave us some bonus subject matter.

This looks very black here, but in some of the Instagram photos in the light it came off more brown? I can't figure it out. I'm going to need a minute on these heavily cropped jackets, but this one looks pretty good on her -- I think what I actually like less are the shoes.

He was up for the Rising Star award -- it's almost mean to nominate five and then make them wait to find out which one is the MOST rising; just GIVE it to someone like you would a lifetime achievement award -- and I like that he went with something unusual, but it almost feels like a formal karate uniform to me.
Sope Dirisu in Dior
He was also nominated for the same thing. Dior outfitted a lot of gents here and I like that they tried to give each one something a little different.
Remi Weekes in Dior
I wish this design didn't simply look crooked.

This is the most straightforward thing they offered anyone. I like the stripe on the pants.

I feel like there's a brother comedy somewhere out there for Jim Broadbent and Jonathan Pryce. Awards for ALL of Britain's actors of a certain age.

Hussain is a poet who produced a video piece for the BAFTAs -- and apparently had to fight through some wisdom tooth pain to do it. No, seriously, that's what he said. That's a bummer for him but at least he had this festive roaring fire.

You are correct that this is not Anthony Hopkins. I don't know if he was presenting or accepting on behalf of, or what, but he directed the winning performance (in "The Father") so I'm going to assume the latter. I would, however, have really loved it if he'd pretended to be Anthony Hopkins the whole time and just never acknowledged that he is not.

At this point it would be a massive upset if she didn't win the Oscar, and I will be massively upset if she doesn't wear flannel and overalls to do it. (Seriously, I am dying to see what she'll do when the formalwear is prescribed.)

Promising Young Woman won Outstanding British Film (but lost the overall award to Nomadland), and Emerald's reaction was great. Also noteworthy: THE JEWELS.
