Florence Pugh in Dries van Noten

Florence not only loves bold color, but big lipstick. I just don't know that this was the RIGHT big lipstick for that gown. I'm generally having a hard time getting excited about a gown that looks like she took a Ren Faire idea, turned it into a giant cardigan, and threw it on over a cocktail dress.

Flo and Saoirse

Oh, Jo and Amy, WILL YOU NEVER SEE EYE TO EYE. (I'm not implying anything about the actresses; it just made me laugh because I feel like Amy and Jo, at one point in their lives, WOULD have studiously ignored each other in this scenario.)

Charlize in custom Dior

I am so thrilled to see her pick color. She looks tremendous in this, even if I again am not sure if the makeup is correct (it seems... too slight? Just a HINT of a darker lip maybe?).

Naomi Ackie in Valentino

What you can't see here is that her left arm has no sleeve. She's pulling off the color and drapey cult-robe cut very well.

This is another photo I downloaded for no other reason than it was interesting. They look like models at a fashion presentation who are just standing stock still.

Renee Zellweger in custom Prada

You're the bride this year, Renee, not the bridesmaid; don't dress like one.

Kaitlyn Dever in custom Miu Miu

This needs a hoik and a hint more edge. Of the younger actors in this cabal of movies, I'd have put that on Thomasin McKenzie. Kaitlyn seems uncommitted to it.

Kristin Scott Thomas in Erdem

Erdem is so extra. This could lose the floaty sleeves and be more effective, I think. This all seems a little twee on her, frankly.

Lulu Wang in Simone Rocha

Well, it's different, at least? The inspiration for this, per Rocha and via Vogue, was, "I was thinking about the Irish wren-boys, who go hunt and kill a wren on St. Stephen’s Day in Ireland—punkish boys who go knocking on doors, kind of like trick-or-treaters. So I wanted to bring that masculinity to the table but also turn and look into the houses of the people whose doors they knock on—at the Delft china, the tablecloths, the wallpaper." Huh.

Ella Balinska in Giambattista Valli

I assume the inspiration for this was, "Jessica McClintock for Bed, Bath, and Beyond."

John Boyega

That suit is fabulous. I am always in favor of shoes that go with socks, but whatever, this whole look works very well on him.

Graham Norton

I'm so pleased to see him.

Wallis Day

Wallis is an actress with whom I'm not familiar, but I had to give her props for showing up and going large. I don't always love this cut of dress, but something about this material makes it feel sumptuous.

Vick Hope

This is substantially less exciting.

Adam Driver, Joanne Tucker

Her dress is beautiful, and he was very entertaining on SNL last week, during which his monologue made fun of whether or not he smiles on the red carpet. I've decided he is making this face as an homage to that bit.

Thank God Florence Pugh Is Coming to the Oscars, Because She Has Kooky Taste
And more from the BAFTAs.
