So, having said I like this, the more I sit with it the more I get a little frustrated with the places it's twisting or bunching. It got funny on her left hip after a while -- it bunched up and pretty much stayed that way, which messed with the lines a bit. The rest of it is very dramatic and cool.

I am wondering if this is how that happened -- like, it moved under her hand -- or if this is what she did to try and cover it. I'm guessing the former. And it's not catastrophic, but it did break the vertical flow.

The top, though. She looks like a butterfly. And walking in on camera, and then doing the opening... it was a perfect, dramatic effect.

And then H.E.R., or should I say Academy Award Winner H.E.R., slunk in there wearing a purple robe -- which Peter Dundas said they made because H.E.R. wanted to pay respects to Prince's win for the Purple Rain score. And she DOES look like she's about to take a passel of worshippers to purple church. I would go.

SURPRISE. IT'S PANTS. Her progressive church might be full of surprise pants -- although HER loves wearing suits, so I guess it's not actually that much of a surprise. It's more like, "The surprise that I am not in pants is, in fact, a false surprise." I'm sure she can turn that into a sermon. I wish they were not sheer pants, but that's always true; it takes a special transparency indeed for me to be happy to see it.

But, her makeup is fantastic. I love that she found a way to be very much herself. Or H.E.R.self.

Youn Yuh-jung in Marmar Halim

Right before she won, Jessica said, "Well, good, she SHOULD get an Oscar from Brad Pitt, assuming she wins." And she did, and she was hilarious about it. I enjoy this dress, and it's nice to see a designer we generally DON'T get on the red carpet, but the black belt feels like an add -- as if the tailoring wasn't quite right when it arrived.

Mia Neal

Mia and her coworker Jamika Wilson became the first black women to win an Oscar in the hair and makeup category. I don't have a dress credit on this, which makes me sad because it's INCREDIBLY neat. It is risky to neck-block yourself in this manner but she's carrying it really splendidly.

If Jon looks familiar to you, it's likely because he's the music leader for Stephen Colbert's show. He also won an Oscar for his work on "Soul." My eyes are very tired so I can't tell if that's blue or perhaps dark purple. Either way, I think it belongs in here, and I love his boutonnière. I love a lapel flower. Perhaps they'll come back in vogue and unseat the pocket square.

Riz Ahmed and Fatima Farheen Mirza

Okay, so Riz is wearing a black turtleneck but I THINK his suit is a very very dark blue or purple or at least has a slight cast to it? Maybe? Let's be honest: He's dreamy but I mostly snagged him for this post because of his wife, who looks utterly stunning in that aqua Valentino. And obviously I'm going to link to the video of him stopping to fix her hair. Some VERY loving starry eyes in there.

Tyler Perry in Armani

I don't know if I love the top of this, but I definitely think Armani did him dirty with the pants. They should be one of those two blues, but not muddy grey.

Lil Rel Howery in Zegna

Like, did Tyler Perry SPILL on his matching pants, and have to borrow one of Lil Rel's backups? (His jacket is burgundy, or... cabernet? Whatever; it's heavy on the eggplant side of that color family.)
