## Janelle Monae

This cover is WILD, in a way I thoroughly enjoy. It's perplexing and confusing, but it has great shape and some humor, and above all, Janelle Monae wearing something that ISN'T by Thom Browne. I don’t think I had the words to express it before… I listened to my spirit and my spirit was screaming, ‘You are a free-ass mothaf\*\*ka!’” she explains, yelling her preferred term for herself and kindreds. “The more I am free in my thinking and living outside of the binary, I’m on a constant discovery of who I can be. I can hold space for a lot of different things at the same time. I just felt like I wanted to free up my mind.”*

## Miriam Margolyes

She may be a controversial pick, as the inherent flippancy in her humor has led to racist remarks, and she has expressed support for JK Rowling and her anti-trans views -- which flies in the face of what a lot of people in this issue stand for and fight for on the daily. But, Miriam has been an out and working actress since 1966, which is pretty early, making her something of a pioneer on that front. [Here is her profile](https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/miriam-margolyes-british-vogue-cover-interview?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), which promotes her forthcoming second memoir (both are apparently fairly dishy and filthy). I do think this cover is a hoot, but...

## Ncuti Gatwa

Ncuti is an actor, his bod is apparently EXTREMELY beautiful, and he's about to be the new Doctor Who. This [from his piece](https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/ncuti-gatwa-british-vogue-cover-interview?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) made me laugh: *“I was just like, ‘There’s no way I’ll get this,’” he tells me with a sly smile. “‘It’s a British institution and there’s no way they’ll cast a Black man.’ So, I just had fun.” It paid off – and left Gatwa in shock. “I felt numb,” he says of landing the part. “And keeping it a secret until the announcement was very difficult. I’d often get a little tipsy in Soho House, make a new best friend in the bathroom, tell them and run off. Thankfully, it never got out.”*

## Bella Ramsey

This is very cool, although I can't look at them rubbing at their eye without twitching. But I certainly think that people have gathered that I’m not 100 per cent straight. I’m a little bit wavy, you know? That’s what I like to say.” If Ramsey has been wavy, then the crew on The Last of Us have been staunch and sturdy in their support. “The costume supervisor would put several different undergarments in my room: a regular bra, a binder, a sports bra,” they explain. “She’d say, ‘You just pick whatever is most comfortable for you today,’ and in the end it was just a binder. There was never anyone pressuring me.”*

And now we have depressed Joan of Arc, although I guess Joan was not necessarily known as having a kooky disposition so perhaps the adjective there is actually implied. [From Emma's piece](https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/emma-darcy-british-vogue-cover-interview?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io): *“We are in a scary period of contraction, especially where trans rights are concerned,” they reflect. “I feel so deeply sad about the vitriol levelled against trans people and gender non-conforming people. I’m also incredibly aware that if I feel like this as a white nonbinary person, I know how much more hostile the environment is for trans women and for trans people of colour.”*
