This is actually pretty unusual for Carey -- so often she's about black and/or cocktail dresses that have something funky going on, so a basic pearly pink gown with flowing long hair and a red lip is a refreshing change. It's INCREDIBLY simple, but for that reason, totally effective on her.

This maybe feels a bit overwrought for a daytime photocall at Cannes, and maybe for anywhere (so much STUFF going on). Carey is trying -- imagine it on Kristen Stewart, also a Balenciaga wearer, and I think it would've looked a bit shlumpier and had more problematic shoes -- but SO MUCH is happening on that sucker. It's like an episode of REVENGE. I'm watching it, and I'm so overwhelmed by everything it's trying to do that I basically just can't pay attention anymore and just have to hope the "previously-on" in front of the next hour will explain it better.

Once you see in clear light all the unflattering bunching and folding and the absurd bow with the beads... the whole thing feels kind of silly, and as if it wants nothing more in life than to be a chair cover at a very lavish Hollywood funeral.
