This dress IS Cannes. It's got a slight Victorian vibe, crossed with a mutant Elizabethan ruff and the Chelsea Flower Show, and if I'm not mistaken her giant train is attached to her WRISTS. It's both garish and spectacular, and it is everything I love about Cannes. Nowhere but the Met Gala would you see this, and frankly, I wish this HAD been at the Met Gala. ON BEYONCE.

I LOVE the overhead angles you get at Cannes, also. The better to document a massive gown, my dear.

This is wonderful on her, too. From the Met to this... she is SO GOOD at pulling out the impact glamour. She just gets it.

Again: loving the overheads. This gown is kind of the gentle good queen to Viann Zhang's Cruella de Vil of Sofas. I am delighted by them both.

All of which makes me look at this and yawn. Yes, it's sleek, streamlined, whatever, but it's also the least imaginative thing I can imagine. THIS IS CANNES. I want Natalie Portman to go a little hog-wild. If ever she's going to unclench, sartorially, this is the time. Just TRY IT and see. Maybe it'll be terrible, but won't that be more fun? Even her lipstick is bored of this.

Sure, why not. Actually, this works on her. It's very I Act In Pictures, Don't'cha Know.

I am not wild about the front of this. It should fit better and THOSE DARTS and it's a very lazy way of pairing something with the cape. But, the cape... the cape works.

But I do love this. I actually had been guessing it might be Prada -- it felt more like Miuccia, in pattern and in nipple dart and in drama, than Stella. But I do get a huge kick out of it from this angle.

attends the opening ceremony and premiere of "La Tete Haute" ("Standing Tall") during the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2015 in Cannes, France.

She's pregnant, and she's not so much dressing the bump as gently placing something on it and hoping it stays put.

These two look pretty, but I'm not sure about the ruched leg-of-mutton sleeves.

Well. Whatever this is -- a curtain belted to pants, a dress -- it's not as successful to me as Isabella Rossellini's. In the Battle of the Grand Dames, I'm giving it to her. FOR NOW.

This is about 65 percent pretty and then the rest of it makes me want to discuss whether bacon is considered a pizza meat. I say it should be.

Welcome, Glinda. Skirts have downsized a little since you were last the good witch.

Frederique Bel is one of those people who seems only to exist in Cannes. I don't know who she is, or why, but she's always there and she's usually mostly naked and stuffed-crust pizza is never as delicious as I want it to be.

Hofit is more of a wide-ranging mystery. I even see her at Fashion Week and I still have no idea what she does. She's a model, I think? A "model"? I don't know. But you can't deny she has a certain sense of occasion.
