The weekend saw a horde of new Louis Vuitton gowns hit the carpet in Cannes -- some, in the case of Cate, made of deadstock, and others (Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Stacy Martin) not. It's nice that Louis Vuitton has kept up with Cate's "everything old is new again" approach to styling, a delight that she and Elizabeth Stewart have kept going with it, and sort of a bummer that nobody else has grabbed the baton themselves. To be clear, I don't like every aspect of some of these dresses, but it's not the deadstock that's the problem; it's the design.
