Sometime after May 2016, Celine called Law Roach, having seen his work with Zendaya and wanting to see what magic he could work with her. When she stepped out in Paris in June, she had an arsenal of things that made us think, "Oh, yes, you can tell he's Zendaya's guy." This all feels VERY contemporary

As does this leather duster, with a dramatic scarf. Smart to start out by keeping everything under it very, very simple.

In fact, they used the same trick here: a noteworthy coat with clean, crisp stuff underneath. And then the peep-toes at the end of those thigh-highs. They are the boots she is using to dip a toe in fashion waters, mayhap.

This is maybe a little TOO simple, as it looks like very expensive scrubs.

I am not madly in love with the blouse, but the tux jacket is very cool on her. This was all still only six months removed from Rene's death -- and her brother died two days later -- so she was just dipping her toe into the waters of Fashion Joy that she dove into later.

I would argue that this whole first set of Paris outings was, for her, therapy.

I LOVE the chartreuse on her. Actually, this might mostly be Highlighter Yellow.

Those are great neutral shoes, and the coat and purse have really stuck with me. They are painfully lovely.

She's at the Dior show here, so Law probably didn't get much say. ALAS.

Is that a DRESS over pants, or a sleeveless coat? I LOVE the jaunty scarf tied to her purse; I just wish it went with the rest of it.

This was a $900 Titanic sweatshirt, and of all the things we've seen her wear so far, it's the one that got the world at large to sit up and take notice. Partly because that's INSANE to pay for a sweatshirt, and partly because Celine is inseparable from that movie and her wearing it is hilariously winky. The whimsy might have been Law's smartest move, because she often -- over the decade(s) -- came across like someone who took herself SO seriously.

Okay but that should've gone to Chloe Grace Moretz. (I wouldn't have liked it on her, probably, and Law doesn't even work with her -- although maybe he SHOULD -- but it just feels like CGM's aesthetic.)

And now we are in HEAD TO TOE WHIMSY. WHIMSYVILLE, POPULATION 1.

Not gonna lie, I wish I could pull off sequined sweatpants and a matching blazer. The patchyness is weird, yes, but she looks like a very cool cat in it.

I wouldn't have done the matchy shoes, but this is VERY assertive INDEED of her. She is FEELING IT.

I can't rightly say I like the handkerchief on her shoulder, but she looks fabulous in this cut and color.

Tell me this woman was not starting to have A LOT OF FUN right about here.

I MEAN. Queen Celine has been born. THis is hilarious and dramatic, and all the parts of Celine that are so entertaining, with a dash of the parts that are starting not to take themselves deadly seriously. (I genuinely think she Gets It.)

This is better than any Kardashians have ever done with Balmain.

Whither your feet, Celine? Also: How about the jacket OR the vest/secondary jacket, but not both? I kind of love the loud pattern; just not that much of it.

This is her turning down the volume.

When Celine commits, she goes head-to-toe. That Cavalli pattern? EVERYWHERE. And here, it's A Study In Blush.

Monochromatically Mint.

And straight-up Jungle Cat.

The leather overalls aren't even the headliner once you notice a) the massive pirate sleeves, and b) the ENORMOUS pearl hooves.

The volume is officially turned back up to 12.

And now we have a BELLBOTTOMED TRACKSUIT. Because of course.

"NAMASTE, CHERIES."

At this time, wherever he was, Jared Leto felt a tremor in the force.

This is surprisingly simple and magnificent for Dior.

A bit fussy, but she pulls that off. I think the boots somehow really help. I guess that's why Law gets paid the big bucks.

This was for a photoshoot, but it felt important to stop and note that Celine is capable of hugging a tree and staring plaintively into the distance. I like to think she does this regularly when she needs to write lyrics or when she has a problem.

Ghastly belt, but the suit is great on her.

There is so much going on here that I only just noticed that the pants are shorter in the front than the back.

And we're well into the part where her version of Carte Blanchett kicks in, because now I just find this endearingly wacky. Did we ever decide what her pun is, by the way?

This is all just a canvas for the disco boots.

I ALSO thought the shirt was two fabrics, but... it's not, is it? One of the fabrics IS HER SKIN.

This photo is the embodiment of The Dionissance.

Wait, maybe THIS is the embodiment. Honestly? It's both.

That shirt looks complicated to wear. The sleeves probably slip off all the time and I wouldn't be surprised if her boobs slip out.

Yes, I do believe those ARE red leather shoes made to look like she has one-strap heels on over them. And, I assume, her baseball uniform for a league of Canadian singers.

I think I'd prefer this if it stopped where the skirt changes.

Such a scrolldown.

Do we think that's a real coat, or a muumuu being used as one?

For like two seconds, I think she wanted us to think she was dating a backup singer/dancer, but that seems to have ceased. Also, I think this is the sequel to the sequined sweats/blazer things hew ore on the Today show earlier in this piece.

Such a commitment to a theme. She is NEVER halfway, that's for sure.

"Yes, sometimes I DO tone it down."

"BUT ONLY SOMETIMES."

Did she come out to greet fans in her PJs?

This was the last shot we have from The Second Summer of Celine, and it was her rock bottom outfit, for me. Here's hoping it hasn't deterred her, though. The prospect of making her summer escapades a trilogy is DELICIOUS.
