King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia wave the crowd at the balcony

King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia of Spain (5)

I mean, look. I am always going to kick these things off with a Balcony Kiss if I have one. BOTH the little Princesses -- Leonor, on the Felipe side, is the now the youngest heir to a throne in Europe, per the unassailable source that is some Twitter I read last night (I actually think I read that in Hello! and Hello! WOULD know -- look like they wish they were wearing their little royal sunglasses. One of the many reasons I would make an unsuitable royal (other than having a very rudely-named blog and about twelve hundred other reasons) is that they never get to wear their sunglasses anywhere. You know how I feel about sunglasses.

This is apparently at "the Congress of Deputies during the King's official coronation ceremony in Madrid." It looks very dramatic, which is as it should be. All that being said, this wasn't the kind of coronation that involved a crown -- like King Willem-Alexander had, which you should revisit here if you feel the need for bling -- and I think they were trying to keep it kind of low-pro, presumably because one of the reasons for the abdication was the swirling clouds of potential legal issues around the former king (I believe; please correct me if I'm off base). But this is unavoidably dramatic, and thank god. (Also, looking at these pictures makes me want to go to Spain.)

Letitiza looks very elegant and lovely in this. (I mean, shoes blah blah blah what can you do?) I love that the detailing on the collar of the coat gives the impression of a necklace without her actually needing to wear jewelry. She's wearing Felipe Varela, a Spanish designer that she wears quite a lot.

This was after the Official Coronation; I believe she's got a braid there along her hairline? At any rate, for someone who last summer took several weeks off and was rumored to be very unhappy with her lot in life, she looks pretty happy. We were discussing this last week in Royal Round-Up, and the consensus was that it must be love with these two. Which is always the option I prefer. (Or a hate-marriage of revenge-spite, just for drama. No middle ground, please.)

The ceremony in the Hearing Room of Zarzuela Palace

This entire event seemed to involve a lot of people standing in rooms and signing paperwork -- apparently becoming King and buying a car have more in common than you'd think -- and this is simply the final of that. (The other people are: [former] Queen Sofia, Princess Elena [Felipe's sister, right?] and Felipe Juan Froilan de Marichalar, who is Elena's son. Two years ago, he accidentally literally shot himself in the foot. [He is fine.] I feel like every time I look up something about the Spanish Royals, a gun is accidentally going off somewhere.) Sofia looks tired, but who can blame here? This is a lot of do-to, and now she has to deal with Juan Carlos puttering around the castle getting in her hair all day.

Signing Of Abdication Law Of Spain King Juan Carlos

This was yesterday, the signing of the abdication law. As (almost) always, I like Letizia's skirt. She was already the Queen of Separates.

Ceremonially Played: The Spanish Coronation
Congrats, Spain! You now have a new King, and he is handsome. (These are the important questions being asked in the wake of this historic event, right? "Is he handsome?" Seems pertinent to me.) Let's look at what everyone wore. [Photos: Splash, PacCoastNews]
