Chappell Roan in 2014

Swerve! We actually begin in the year when she was 16 and auditioned for America's Got Talent and... didn't make it?!? They missed out on THAT voice. Wow.

2022

I'm including this from 2022 just because sometimes people forget an overnight sensation didn't ACTUALLY start the day before.

2023

This is the 2023 Grammys afterparty, at which point she had already released "Naked in Manhattan," "My Kink is Karma," "Femininomenon," and "Casual" off of the album that would be The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. You can see she'd already started moving in the style direction she ultimately takes.

2024

I was so focused on her foray into what would become her signature face paint, I ALMOST didn't notice her feet. She told ET her vibe was "horse," and said, "It's pop music! It's silly, it's fun, it's drag."

2024

And here she is at the Grammys afterparty, in an outfit AND a snout that later became the cover art for "Good Luck, Babe," when the single came out. I genuinely think she just used a picture someone took of her in a hallway on this very night. I saw one theory that she was referencing the movie "Penelope" with this, but I also like to think she's just a MASSIVE Miss Piggy fan.

Chappell Roan In Concert

And now we're off to the races. Lots of boots and spandex and costumes incoming.

2024

I'm not sure how this fits in, unless someone at her label was like, "Tone it down!" BORING. Tone it UP, I say.

AND SHE DID. Also, this was in June. Not even the Fourth of July. It wouldn't be camp if it were the real Independence Day.

I'm not sure if she's just casually smoking, or making a statement about liberty -- and America -- being on fire.

This photo is amazing, because it looks like her shins don't exist. Being a floating body WOULD be exciting.

Now we're cooking with gas. I wonder if she turned it up the more famous she got, to really try and drive that wedge between her career and her home life.

I love the Lucha Libre theme here.

I love those boots. And her eye shadow is always art.

Here she is wearing vintage at the VMAs, looking like a damsel of some ilk.

Then she dressed as a knight and slayed a bunch of dancers, so I'm guessing that's part of the storyline she started on the red carpet.

This is what it looked like without the cape, by the way. I kind of miss it.

And she finished the night as Drag Joan of Arc, which feels right.

The star boobs became something of a motif, as she has them in pink...

... and red.

This has a tag on the front that says WRANGLER. I wonder if it's made from recycled materials. It LOOKS sort of like the fashion version of something you'd wear in the trenches, which would be apt.

FINALLY, a place to use those ripped tights: My Chappell Roan costume.

It was only a matter of time before she put the "chaps" in "Chappell." Just pretend the S is in her name somewhere.

This looks... complicated and uncomfortable.

I don't really know what to do with this. It's like an ode to blood clots.

wiht Brandi Carlile

I assume they coordinated for this, which is cute, and also explains why Chappell looks very restrained. I suspect this is NOT the vibe she'll carry with her into the new year, but you never know.

The Year In Chappell Roan Began With a Snout and Hooves

As so many things do.
