Claire Foy in 2011

I don't have a credit on this one. And surprisingly, for a First Outfit We Could Find pic, I actually don't mind it. The top is obviously a little thin, and the taupe isn't my favorite, but the idea is right. A little tweaking here could help, but it's a perfectly nice start. How often does THAT happen?

A design credit! The cut of that neckline is TOUGH, but the dress works pretty well on her, doesn't it? Proenza is seen so infrequently; this was a nice surprise.

AND THEN ERDEM STRIKES. This was at the premiere of The Crown in London, her first event on behalf of this (or at least the first major one), and... look, it's definitely APT that she dressed in a fabric that almost certainly appears on a throw pillow or a wall or a sofa in Buckingham Palace, but I will take a hard pass on the sleeves, for starters. Also, I keep forgetting she went blonde briefly (for a role). She looks completely different.

She was hot for Erdem at this point (and for pink, which you'll see continued in the next slide). This definitely plays against her QE2 image, but I also thought and STILL think that it's terribly twee and forgettable on her. Which was a shame because she WON that night and that REALLY helped cement her as a budding household name.

She looks like Emily Blunt to me with this coloring. I like this better than the previous two, but it's not my favorite. I wish it had picked between sleeveless and sleeves, and the collar is bothering me. Still, it was a step forward.

This was to the Rei Kawakubo Met Gala, so it both baffles me in terms of the theme, and evokes the cut of the one she had worn six months earlier to kick off The Crown. I don't care for it on her; even with that lipstick, she gets lost.

I didn't like this at the time. I am feeling more warmly disposed to it after the passing of time, because the bodice appears to be in the right place. I think my MAIN objection then was the cut of the pants, and the fact that she was a likely winner and this seemed a little lazy? Maybe more on OdlR's part than hers. I don't know. I like it better with the benefit of hindsight, basically.

At this point, with gowns, rarely went with color unless it was ALL OF THE COLORS. I like this on her, though. It's definitely one of the better busy Guccis.

I like the casual look in her IN THEORY, but the hair looks like (I noted this at the time) she just took off her Crown wig cap and brushed it out hastily, and the paper bag top on the pants being white-lined keeps making me think I can see her underpants or something.

This was the S2 Crown premiere, at which point she was already Lisbeth Salander, hence the hair. This gown feels all wrong for that cut. Even with all those sparkles, together they make her look frumpy.

She looks pretty in this -- it was at the Time's Up Globes -- but I want to tweak the pants hem a bit. 'Twas ever thus, and ever thus shall be, where Stella is concerned.

The way the overlay and the slip dress sit together just looks messy and imprecise, to me, rather than dreamy.

I really sympathize with her growout situation here. But the outfit is not helping. She looks like a Jim Carrey character. Possibly a Dumb and Dumber relative.

Vanessa Kirby's hair always looks like a fried mess on the red carpet, but her outfit here wins over Claire's. Easily.

At the time, I thought this was SO BATSHIT that it made me smile. Y'all did not like it AT ALL and were not nearly as amused. In the fullness of time, I have come to agree more with you than I do with my original self, and in fact Elle Fanning wears something in our Best of 2018 post that is the better version of what this is trying (and is also by Valentino). So this ends up feeling like its own cheap knockoff of itself, in that sense?

By now, you can tell she's taking a LOT more chances with a lot more cuts and colors, which will continue to the end here. This is definitely the Monseters showing themselves in the Oscar line, though. It's okay. Just okay.

... I agree with myself. That is dull at best from the front, and from the back looks like one of those fancy chair covers you rent for dinner parties. Someone MIGHT have tried to sit on her at the party. It's terribly, terribly blah, and this is in part why I look back at her 2017 Emmys jumpsuit and feel more positively about it.

Sure! Fine. It's not great -- I think the velvet is showing some of Stella's imprecisions -- but it's not egregious.

I like this -- Valentino, by and large, might be her most successful collaboration and she needs to throw away Erdem's number -- but I want the belt to have MORE contrast. That dark red with this particular bright red doesn't work for me.

I am not sure about the cut of this velvet suit, but I AM sure that trimming her growout into this posh bob was a cute choice.

Yeah ,the suit looks baggy. The shoes, though. THE SHOES. I would say they're wasted on Good Morning America, but she'll be seated and so they MIGHT have made their way on camera.
