'The Talented Mr Ripley' Uk Premiere

Look at the baby faces of -- from left to right --Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Davenport here. Matty is working some weird bangs at these premieres but Jude Law has never been more beautiful and while this may be hard to believe from our current perspective, Gwynnie's look here was SO ON TREND in late 1999.

Gwyneth Paltrow

This was like everyone's DREAM Y2K New Year's look! Even the Gap was selling baby blue leather pants in 1999. To be totally honest, GOOP could wear that top, that bag, and those boots today if she styled them right. (I don't have a fashion credit for any of GOOP's looks, which is a little annoying. Gwyneth wore a lot of Gucci in 1999 -- which Tom Ford was there, AKA the best Gucci -- but this isn't that. I'm sure one of you will be able to ID some of these though!)

This is actually amazing on Gwyneth, and -- again -- she could wear this top, at least, again, if styled well. (I always liked her with dark hair.)

And this dress is timeless and great.

We wore a LOT of strapless tops in 1999. 1999 was VERY interested in what was happening to your shoulders.

Matt Damon and Anthony Minghella

The death of Anthony Minghella was such a loss -- he did both Ripley AND The English Patient, which are both BEAUTIFUL and two of my personal favorites (talk about Rich People Having Problems and/or Beautiful People With Problems During Wars).

Julianna Margulies and Cate Blanchett

I did not even know these two knew each other, much less well enough for Julianna to be Cate's date to this premiere! But there are tons of pics of them together from this time period -- they WERE in a movie together in 1997 -- so I guess they were indeed tight at least at some point. Cate looks stunning here; Carole Hathaway is sincerely wearing a 1999 costume.

Winona Ryder

I'd just like to point out that rumor has always had it that Goop "stole" the Shakespeare in Love role from her friend Winona Ryder BUT! This is AFTER Gwyneth already won the Oscar for that, so clearly Wino wasn't that pressed. Although she was ALSO dating Matt Damon at this point -- Gwyneth introduced them - so I guess she had to come out and support her boyfriend. Anyway, her bosom looks resplendent here.

HE was dating Gwyneth at this point. (I can barely remember anything that is happening in the current day, but I CAN remember what celebrities were dating in 1999.) And of course he also would have attended this event to support Matty. Anyway, his suit is too big.

Garcelle Beauvais

Garcelle Beauvais looks like she was going to the Dresden after this for a drink or too. (That's not a dig. I had many a fun drunk night at the Dresden in 1999 whilst wearing what we called Buffy boots.)

Freddie Prinze Jr

Speaking of Buffy, here is her spouse! (They had met at this point, but were not yet dating.) He looks like a sexy pastor here.

Remember what I said about leather?

We REALLY were into leather in 1999! REALLY VERY MUCH. (She looks great in this, also.)

Rachel Hunter

I would have died for this coat in 1999 and I STILL love it. I hope she still has it.

Anthony Kiedis

This suit is very good but I'm worried Anthony was trying something ill-advised with his hair in 1999.

Hi, Bai Ling!

JJL, also in a timeless coat. (Or, perhaps, my Coat Taste is permanently stuck in 1999, which would make sense. What if everyone's Coat Taste gets stuck in the year when they were 24?)

Rob Lowe and Sheryl Berkoff

Rob Lowe, pointing for visual interest, in a man coat that was definitely reacting to the upswing in man vintage we saw post-Swingers. Fun fact: He ALSO dated Winona Ryder. (Like WELL before this.)

Philip Baker Hall

Philip Baker Hall always looked perfectly himself. Very nice fact: Contrary to what I thought until about two minutes ago when I looked it up, he is NOT dead.

Kate Moss

Yes, Kate Moss is also present! (She is very tight with Judd Law.) I wonder if she and Winona compared notes about dating Johnny Depp. "How'd you like his tattoo," I like to imagine Winona asking.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

If you haven't seen this movie in a while (or ever), do yourself a favor -- Philip Seymour Hoffman is ASTONISHINGLY good in it.

Alicia Silverstone

We were also very into turtlenecks in 1999. (I personally think a black turtleneck is a classic, though.) Do not ask me what Alicia was trying with her hair here.

Helena Bonham Carter

"Yes, hello. I'm here. Why not!"

Come See How Beautiful Everyone Was at the 1999 Premiere of The Talented Mr Ripley
VERY beautiful.
