Cynthia is one of *GQ*'s Men of the Year cover stars, which the magazine doesn't really hang a bell on -- I like that -- but [there is a line in the profile](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/cynthia-erivo-men-of-the-year-interview-2025?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), almost lost at the end there, about how she likes to take roles that subvert expectations, such as when she played Jesus Christ in *Jesus Christ Superstar* this summer at the Hollywood Bowl, and a forthcoming theatrical event where she'll play all 23 parts in a version of *Dracula*. Her take:

> *"I think inevitably, because I’m in this body with this skin, in this time, everything I do will be political. I’ve been told so many times that I pick controversial roles, and I’m like, ‘Why? Why are the roles I pick controversial?’ It’s not like I set out to go, ‘Oh, what’s controversial in that?’ I just pick a thing that I feel like I want. If I was a different person, in a different body, in a different skin, it wouldn’t be controversial.”*
