This was in February 2015, when the Public Theater -- the original, pre-Broadway venue for Hamilton -- announced the cast. Prior to that, he'd only done roles here and there in short films, and musical work of his own. He'd been involved in Hamilton's development as early as 2012, too. But seriously: Talk about a career-maker. And Lin-Manuel Miranda obviously has an incredible eye for talent. ANYWAY, the other point here is, he obviously also had cool taste, because I love this hoodie.

This is from an early performance at the Public, and I'm including it because a) I could, and b) they also had a shot of opening night on Broadway, and I'm going to scoot ahead in time for one second just so you can see them back to back...

The differences are subtle, but you can see the costumes got JUST a bit richer and better once they hit the big stage. I love flipping back and forth and focusing on the changes in tailoring and stitching in such a short time. Constant evolution.

He won an award here for his work on the Public's stage. (He won almost all of the awards he was nominated for, except losing one to Lin, one to Jonathan Groff, and one - a Distinguished Performance award - to none other than Chita Rivera, which, OKAY, I'll accept that). I LOVE that suit, and applaud his Ray Bans work.

And here, we have a lot of his personality coming through. It's bigger, brighter, louder. I love the metallic shoes, and the jacket, and I also think it needs one or two things taken away, perhaps?maybe jacket OR vest but not both, for example.

I also enjoy the unexpected hit of bandanna here, and "unexpected hit of bandanna" is not a phrase I ever expect to need.

He must really like bandannas.

Here we are back to opening night on Broadway. This is gorgeous. Perfect on him in every way.

Y'all I had to look at this for a LONG TIME to find the line of the blazer. I sincerely thought this was a jumpsuit. And honestly, that didn't feel off-brand.

An attempt was made. That hoodie feels like he grabbed it for emergency warmth, and it's stepping on the vibe.

Similar, but not identical to his opening-night siut, and it's also really great. He went with a kickier shoe. Blue suede, mayhap? I wonder if he was EXHAUSTED by the end of the night from having to laugh politely at people who were all, "HA, should I STEP ON THEM???"

I love this whole look on him. I honestly can hardly picture him with his hair back EXCEPT as Lafayette. It suits him -- he is very handsome; anything would suit him -- but I miss the curls.

I enjoyed this so much at the time, but with a step or two back, for me it's... so close but not quite? The hem of the pants feels a touch too high, just a TOUCH, and the sleeves would have been cooler without the added restraints wrapped around them. But boy, do I appreciate that he went for it. I don't think menswear was regularly adventurous yet then, although time has lost all meaning so maybe.

Also, the "Tony nominee" captions threw me off -- I forgot they don't update them -- so I was like, "What? Who BEAT him for the Tony?" Spoiler: No one did. Also, Renee's dress really holds up.

I have no idea what's going on here. If it's not Thom Browne, it definitely wants to be.

However you feel about politics, at least the new White House occupants enjoy books, music, culture, and other things that enrich the world. The Kennedy Center Honors, like so many things, will be fun again! Daveed started out on this day with a jacket on, but presumably got over-warm and removed it. He may have looked back and wished he'd tucked in his shirt with this.

I genuinely love this jacket and want it for myself. I would never have the guts to wear it -- I prefer not being seen! -- but I love the idea of it existing in my house.

If Uzo Aduba doesn't want to host Celebrity Shoe Intervention, or she needs a vacation, then Daveed can totally step in.

... Okay but this IS a jumpsuit, right? I KNEW that would turn out to be his jam.

Half of this is a tailcoat; half is a slightly too-short sportcoat. All of it is a challenge. I also don't know what those pods are...? Bless you, fine sir, for giving me things at which to furrow that are not life-and-death in nature.

This is to the premiere of a kids' movie, so a pastel Twister mat feels right, but I can't figure out how the red capris fit in here.

Like the coat, LOVE THE SHOES.

He also always reps his hometown, which I love.

This is the cast of Blindspotting - yep, that's And Peggy in there, and Janina Gavankar, who looks hella warm and also as if she made that top out of a small rug that used to live in her entry-way.

This is almost surprisingly casual from him. But the kicks are very good.

I am curious if both coats were necessary. Maybe the outer coat is trying to hide the off-kilter wackitude of the interior one. I like to think his girlfriend couldn't look at him without cocking her head, and he was like, "Shit, better throw on an overcoat or else everyone will be doing that."

I do enjoy his commitment to plaid.

I'm sure all of this is exactly as quirky as he wanted it to be, and equally sure this would have worked better with a plain shirt.

I wish we had a better look at how this whole thing fit together. The tie reminds me of when people would show up to fancy restaurants without one and the Maitre d' would force one on them from the Closet of Extras.

This is a scrolldown. It's Nutty Professor and then... just nutty.

Everyone here looks foxy, and I want to clip his drawstrings.

HERE WE GO. This is kind of like Moto Elton John.

Maybe Daveed Diggs is always cold, and that's why he likes to layer to the extreme.

His smile is truly infectious.

Is this... a pair of rib cages, hanging out together?

THE SHOES. SO GOOD. He's giving the coat the Kardashian treatment -- empty sleeves -- and it steps on the outfit a little.

Straightforward and effective.

MORE plaid. I appreciate you, sir.

And this was the last we saw of him at an event. He and Emmy were at a limited outdoor movie premiere, and their masks are AWESOME, as is her blazer. It's a solid ending: covid-conscious but still clearly flashing the megawatt grin.
