## with Howard Taylor and Montgomery Clift, 1951

Elizabeth Taylor with her brother Howard Taylor, Jr. and screen actor Montgomery Clift at La Guardia Airport.

We open with Elizabeth and her brother and her best friend and famous dreamboat Monty Clift at La Guardia. It's entertaining that it looks like Elizabeth and Montgomery are arguing; if I were her, I'd win every single tiff simply by reminding him that I [once saved his life by reaching down his throat to yank out the teeth that were choking him post car-accident](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2014/09/scandals-of-classic-hollywood-montgomery-clift?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). (Elizabeth was a bad ass.) Howard Taylor, whom she adored, only recently died.

Amusingly, Informative Caption tells us "Taylor sports a large sapphire engagement ring on her hand," despite the fact that we cannot see her hand at all. This would be her engagement to Michael Wilding.

It seems that fur AND that bag were her airline travel go-to options for at least two years.

(Original Caption) 6/19/1952-Los Angeles, CA- Actress, Elizabeth Taylor(center), holds her pet kitten, "Tailspin," upon meeting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Taylor, at the Los Angeles airport. The young screen star returned to Hollywood from England after 6 months absence from the film capital. Her husband, British actor, Michael Wilding, will join her son.

Fun fact: This cat is named Tailspin. I hope you enjoy people cuddling pets at airports, because Elizabeth Taylor did not like to travel without them.

This was truly the heydey of folks wearing hats on planes. And while people always crack jokes about how often Elizabeth was married, Wilding married four times himself. His suit is beautiful.

Yes, Grace is holding a poodle. Informative Caption tells us, "\[t\]his beautiful threesome arrived on the same TWA plane from the West Coast, nonstop from Los Angeles, and it was almost too much to take all at once. From left are movie star Grace Kelly, starting a long vacation; Elizabeth Taylor en route to join her husband, Briton Michael Wilding, and Laraine Day, here to root for the New York Giants, master minded by her husband Leo Durocher." It fails to mention that Laraine Day was an actress herself at one point, and ergo was probably not as irked at having to pose for photos fresh off a plane with two of America's most iconic beauties as the rest of us might have felt. Additionally, the Giants in question there are the baseball team, AKA now the San Francisco Giants; [Durocher's Wiki is a corker and a fun read](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo%5FDurocher?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). (Christopher Meloni played him in *42*, for reference.)

Yada yada yada, now we're married to Mike Todd, with whom Elizabeth went to Australia. He, of course, died in a plane crash the following year, and Elizabeth AND Eddie Fisher were both devastated and found comfort in one another's arms. I will note, as I've said before, that I think Elizabeth's statement that she never got over Mike was one she made in part to annoy Richard Burton, although I do not doubt that his death was formative for her as a person and also sincerely devastating. This relationship was allegedly "tempestuous" and his previous wife did not give a good review and in fact noted he once held her outside a window by her ankles. Having said that: This photo is terribly glam.

The contemporaneous Informative Caption here WENT FOR IT: "Actress Elizabeth Taylor poses for photographers on a plane's ramp at Idlewild Airport, shortly before leaving for Hollywood. Miss Taylor shook off questions by newsmen of her reported romance with singer Eddie Fisher. 'That's a stupid question,' she snapped at a reporter who asked if she were falling in love with Fisher, and added 'I'm not going to dignify it with an answer.'" I will additionally note that this photo is amazing and her outfit is likewise.

And here she is with Eddie! Again per our sources at Informative Caption: "Surrounded by a crowd of newsmen, newlyweds Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher stand on the flight line at Idlewild Airport here May 15th, prior to boarding an airliner, bound for Barcelona, Spain, as they start a honeymoon-vacation in Europe. They told newsmen they plan 'to have as many children as we can.'" So the newsmen got their answer eventually. This look on her is gorgeous. I imagine Debbie Reynolds seeing this in the paper over breakfast and stabbing her grapefruit aggressively. (Although, as I've said before, Eddie Fisher seems like he would be annoying to be married to.)

The head scarves continue! Here, Informative Caption tells us that "Elizabeth Taylor, still recovering from her near-fatal illness, greets her three children at the airport with her husband, Eddie Fisher. The children arrived from England to join their parents in Southern California." Elizabeth had a LOT of health problems; this particular reference is to a VERY serious bout of pneumonia that she caught filming *Cleopatra*; she had to get a tracheotomy, and the news briefly reported that she had died.

THE STOCKINGS ARE BACK! Informative Caption also tries to explain to me that she's wearing "a tailleur and a foulard, holding a handbag, walking next to her husband Richard Burton, many people around them, at Marco Polo Tessera airport in Venice, 1971." A tailleur is "a woman's tailor-made suit," but the dictionary notes that this term is both formal AND out-dated. The foulard is her scarf. Whoever wrote this caption was (a) fancy and (b) perhaps trying to ignore the culottes.

Let me quote myself once again, so as to place us all in space and time: "\[Liz and Dick\] got a divorce in June, 1974, then got back together and got remarried in Botswana in October, 1975, then broke up again and got divorced AGAIN in July 1976." Judging from [this slightly insane contemporaneous piece in New York](https://books.google.com/books?id=kOkCAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA57&lpg=PA57&dq=Henry+Wynberg&source=bl&ots=744FEUIchp&sig=ACfU3U3xfzExpJ7-kQQp7ZyIoiYwyj%5F-JA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwibqdv5-fH4AhWZD0QIHW6jA2cQ6AF6BAgUEAM#v=onepage&q=Henry%20Wynberg&f=false), this relationship transpired just between the first divorce and them getting back together and I also want to, respectfully, laugh that this poor man thought he was going to be able to talk Elizabeth Taylor out of getting back together with RICHARD BURTON. COME ON. LOOK AT HER FACE.

This was a mere month after wedding two, in Botswana. She looks positively giddy.

And things seem fine here! Making out at LAX, like you do. I do truly truly believe these two are absolute soulmates and for sure would have gotten together again if Richard Burton had lived longer. (He died in 1984.) I ALSO think both of their friends had to have been OVER THIS. Can you imagine?

Elizabeth looks adorable; WHAT is Connie Stevens wearing? Fun fact: This was "JFK Iran Air Inaugural 747 Flight," and Iran Air spared no expense, clearly. This flight, if I am reading its Wiki correctly, "set a new world record in time and distance for a non-stop, scheduled long-haul flight." Prior to the Iranian Revolution in 1979, as I understand it, Iran was a fairly popular tourist destination for Westerners, especially if you skied, and of course due to its rich history.

This woman loves a scarf! Her companion here is her boyfriend Victor Luna, to whom she was engaged...until around when Richard Burton died. She was ALSO engaged to Dennis Stein here! This look on Elizabeth feels like true White Diamonds Elizabeth, and that is comforting and wonderful. Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor's luggage being transferred from Heathrow Airport, after her arrival from Los Angeles, where she is preparing to be made a Dame by the Queen. The 68 year old British-born actress said "It's the peak of my life". \* The eight-times married star who wed Welsh-born actor Richard Burton twice vowed she would never tie the knot again when asked if there was currently a man in her life. 24/10/04: Overpacking British holidaymakers are taking bags too much luggage away with them. Most lumber themselves with 15 kilos of hand luggage - 50% more than the normally-allowed limit. They take clothes they never wear and several pieces of jewellery for even a short break, while some even pack space-consuming travel irons, a survey from Churchill Travel insurance found. (Photo by PA Images via Getty Images)

I just thought you might want to see all her luggage -- although this LAX to Heathrow trip WAS notable. Per Informative Caption: "Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor's luggage being transferred from Heathrow Airport, after her arrival from Los Angeles, where she is preparing to be made a Dame by the Queen. The 68 year old British-born actress said "It's the peak of my life". \* The eight-times married star who wed Welsh-born actor Richard Burton twice vowed she would never tie the knot again when asked if there was currently a man in her life." Later, this Informative Caption was updated because it was used in a story about how British travellers tend to overpack. Leave them alone! Perhaps they need their fur turbans!
