She started off with a bang in this Gucci, which I think is immaculate on her. It's rare for Gucci to show as much restraint as it does in putting just the purple flower here. Of course, it does also have a cape. BUT STILL.

If I have a beef, it's that the cape puckers along the seam here. Yes, I know, I ruin everything.

When the cat eats your scarf, you just repurpose it. I find it interesting to see this in the context of the OTHER Dior she wears -- the one with the hat -- because the sleeves here and the blouse there seem to be made of the same material. This feels VERY related to the other one, almost like the Dior outfits tell a specific story of a Girl Scout who grows up into a mysterious femme fatale mogul.

This was for the Les Miserables premiere and I've decided it's inspired by what Cosette imagined herself wearing in the castle on the cloud/what she actually wears as an adult in Jean "The Mayor" Valjean's house. Tyra Banks would call attention to the swan-like neck Elle is serving in this photo, which is quite remarkable. This is very fairytale of her.

If they didn't design this for her... well, then they might be lying about that, because it sure FEELS designed for her.

The lighting in her stylist's photo is ACES and shows off more of the bust pleating. But then the skirt is kind of an ode to dying flowers? The EXACT opposite of all the beautiful blooming ones she just wore. The weird irony here too is that she herself fainted in this gown, just as the blossoms foretold.

We've seen Elle in big princessy dresses plenty of times, but for ME this was the revelation, because it's got a lot of panache and a dose of kitsch and it feels like a sneak preview of what she might mature into as she takes her Period Face toward her thirties.

Sometimes her head does look like it's on backwards in this blouse. But she's modeling the SHIT out of it through the hat brim. I can only see one eye and yet I feel as though I need to answer for my behavior at ONCE.

Okay, I forgot this was also Dior, and it doesn't fit in with the othr two. I don't love it, but it's at least INTERESTING.

Here she looks like a young traveling MD who, say, Peggy Carter would call to see her lady friends whose male doctors don't understand their problems.

Everything about this makes me sad EXCEPT for how comfortable she probably was as she sat there and watched endless movies.

This is an actual bridal gown, too. I often wonder why stylists shop among those racks, when there are so many other choices, but certainly this suits Elle to a tee. I do wish she'd indulged her bigger, brighter Cannes impulses and gone out with a bang of color or pattern, but when it fits and twinkles and you look like a queen, it's hard to argue.
