Emma Thompson Fugtrospective

1983

This is a promotional shot for a comedy troupe show called Alfresco, which was a murderer's row of UK talent: Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie. It's also my Patronus.

1988

I genuinely have no idea if this is a costume or her actual wardrobe.

This is apparently a shot from The Tall Guy, which I guess she was in with Jeff Goldblum? I have not seen it, but I downloaded it because of her groovy Madonna gloves.

This is her wedding to Kenneth Branagh, and I HAD NO IDEA she wore something so evocative of Bo Peep giving herself a makeover in a wallpaper store.

1991

It's even more intense in color.

1992

This is her Oscar for Howard's End, which I had somehow forgotten about. It is also the first wrap of many. MANY. Many, many.

I assume this was Helena Bonham Carter's Christmas card that year. Actually, this photo is quite bittersweet, given that it was an affair with HBC that ended Emma's marriage to Ken Branagh. Maybe this was EMMA's Christmas card after the divorce.

1996

Emma looks nice, and what on Earth is Kate wearing? It's NOT jeans, but it kind of looks like it. She comes off like a pharmaceutical sales rep at an annual conference.

Emma and I might be a bit alike in this way. Not that I habitually wear spiders, but I -- for someone who is also fundamentally shy -- will always pick up the dumb prop and do something silly with it.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Shutterstock (937498q) Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson 'Last Chance Harvey' film premiere at the Odeon West End Cinema, Leicester Square, London, Britain - 03 Jun 2009 In 'Last Chance Harvey' New Yorker Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) goes to London for a weekend to attend his daughter's (Liane Balaban) wedding only to learn his daughter has chosen to have her stepfather (James Brolin) walk her down the aisle instead of him. Doing his best to hide his devastation, he leaves the wedding before the reception in hopes of getting to the airport on time, but misses his plane anyway. When he calls his boss to explain, he is fired on the spot. Drowning his sorrows at the airport bar, Harvey strikes up a conversation with Kate (Emma Thompson), a 40-something employee of the Office of National Statistics. Kate, whose life is limited to work, the occasional humiliating blind date and endless phone calls from her smothering mother (Eileen Atkins), is touched by Harvey, who finds himself energized by her intelligence and compassion. The growing connection between the pair inspires both as they unexpectedly transform one another's lives.

Now THIS is Dancing With The Stars.
