We begin with the jury president herself, in a Stella suit that's pulling and squabbling with itself all over the place, and finished with shoes that might as well not be there. This is... a bummer. What are May daytime Cannes photocalls, if not a time to get light and airy? Let's hope Cate is beginning symbolically, with a blank slate that she will color later with all manner of divine nonsense.

This is a much more stylish pantsuit, even WITH the blazer clinging only to her shoulders, and the shoes that are eating up more of her foot than is strictly necessary. It's STILL way more fun.

And this is... you know, Chanel. So it's tweedy and semi-questionable. I wish it had been a skirt. The high-waisted pant isn't flattering on her -- pelvises of the world UNITE against this crime -- and the cut is dumpy.

Ava's pattern is super -- EXACTLY how to do Cannes at noon, CATE - and Khadija looks very cool, too. Seeing Cate and K.Stew together made me realize that it feels WRONG that Kristen isn't in Ocean's 8, so I guess that means this needs to be the cast of Ocean's 5, except it hs to be Ocean's 6 so that Sandy Bullock can join as she is the titular Ocean. Unless Kristen Stewart is a surprise younger Ocean. Maybe she can be Intern George and Julia's rapid-aged daughter.

And then, on the red carpet at the opening ceremony/first screening, Cate recycled a dress she wore to the 2014 Golden Globes. I am SO GLAD I did not hallucinate this. I stared and stared and thought, "Didn't she already wear this EXACT THING?" For once I was correct.

2014 and 2018

Her styling in 2014 was better, I think, although I still think the dress is a little aggressive on her. It will never be my favorite Cate dress, and thus, the choice to bring it out twice is a bizarre one. But I can't stay mad at her. Especially not when she's actually pulling out gowns a second time and giving me hope that others may live again too.

She should basically never pull out any of her Chanel gowns ever again. This is AWFUL. I am seeing too many private contours and they are not being nicely gift-wrapped.

Ava DuVernay

Ava looks like a cool schoolmarm. I want a little more of the former and less of the latter for her, but I mean, I look at Kristen's dress and am just glad Chanel has not gotten its grubby hands on her.

Khadja Nin

YES. Khadja is a Burundian singer, by the way. I was not familiar with her, but by the time this jury reaches its verdicts, I am going to be ALL up in her grill. I love her textiles.
