Allison Williams in Armani Prive

the fashion of girls in 2015

Allison started out the year memorably. This is so pretty. I can't decide if her makeup is wholly right with it or not, but the gown is wonderful and I do detect a hint of a bracelet back there. Also I just remembered that time she and Katy Perry supposedly were best friends and they went to the Grammys together, or something? What happened to THAT?

ALSO really good, even if it does vaguely look like she was bound with gaffer tape.

Not usually one for the midriff trend, but this is the perfect slice of it. Her feet kind of disappear, though; I might have wondered about matching one of the other colors in the dress, like perhaps a strappy mustard sandal.

This was a shitshow. Well, okay, that's harsh. But I truly dislike it. The top is so promising, and then the bottom just devolves into Satan's dance recital.

This, she wore to the Met after party, and I would have liked it better lined so that the flashbulbs weren't reflecting off her underpinnings quite so vibrantly. The color is great, though. Girlfriend LOVES a red -- but apparently not on her lips, or at least, not with a dress of the same shade.

This needed to go back to the tailor for, like, six months.

Minus the All Wrong shoes, I love this on her. It's a new color for her -- and THERE is that red lipstick I wanted, but the eye makeup is too heavy with it; our commenters the first time around were concerned she'd done something to her face because of how different it makes her look. But this is a very grown-up Chic Businesslady type style for her, and it was a nice departure.

And this is just... amazing. A perfect turn away from a princessy ball gown silhouette and toward something sleek and adult. She looks smashing. It was a good year, on balance.

Jemima Kirke

And now we get to the one who will offer you salvation for the low, low price of $2000 a month and some classes and maybe a few potions of her own making (don't ask for the recipe until you are at LEAST a Level 6). I actually find this amusingly delightful on her -- she has always been a lover of a caftanic style -- especially when you compare it to her big high-fashion outing at the CFDAs...

... to which she wore a giant tongue.

This feels very Jessa (her character), in that I look at it and think it has to be 15 seconds from falling down entirely.

But then THIS is very nice -- a gentle bridge between cult robes and formalwear.

Lena Dunham in Creatures of the Wind

I thought this was a big improvement for her right from the get-go (she wore this right at the top of 2015). The neckline wouldn't be my personal top pick, but the shape and color pops of this dress flatter her figure enormously while also not stumpifying it. I appreciate this risk, is what I'm saying.

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

I also love the idea of this one, and feel like she got the makeup and hair right. But as with many a Posen before and since, something about the seaming is betraying everything that could have been great here.

The stripes and polka dots here are REALLY cute, though, and again, we're starting to see her find her shape.

See? Flattering! Smart use of panels to give her a longer line. I love this, frankly.

Lena Dunham in Lisa Perry

I am NOT as wild about this. Great colors, but that billowy cut is back to what does her no favors. And the SHOES HURT MY FACE. They have no relation to the outfit, and even less relation to an actual grown person.

Lena Dunham

I like the pattern here, but also that she is gazing at Sia with unvarnished curiosity -- as if either wondering what the hell is happening and how she sees anything, or whether Hannah Horvath should go through a Sia phase.

Lena Dunham in Mary Katrantzou

the fashion of girls in 2015

This was a phase of the pixie cut that was not my favorite. I actually like the dress on her, AND the shoes, and think her makeup is the mess-up. But mostly I appreciate the effort to try something bright and/or ballsy.

I look at this loud-ass dress and think, "SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER! SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER." It's not my favorite outfit, but it's not shying away from itself, and there's something to be said for that. (The shoes, however, say nothing to me about anything except chafing.)

Lena Dunham

This could be worse? I like it in theory, and wish it were tailored better to her -- or perhaps that she was standing up straighter in it.

Lena Dunham in MSGM

This one is by far her boldest look of the lot, which she wore to cap off the year. I'm of two minds about it. On one hand, it's lively and cheery and actually looks pretty good on her. On the other, it looks like a yarn store sneezed all over her tweed.

But the thing is, it doesn't even matter. When we like stuff AND when we hate stuff, we always appreciate when people are taking wild shots at this target. It makes things SO much more interesting.

Zosia Mamet in Andrew Gn

the fashion of girls in 2015

She hasn't had the BEST run of luck with gowns yet. I hated this with a white-hot fire, partly because of the boring, tired design, but largely because those two colors together are a big nothing. It's like ice-cream soup.

Zosia Mamet in Houghton

Very, very, '90s. A tremor just went through Tori Spelling's spine.

Zosia Mamet

Cute dress, but those boots... AND HER HEAD. I have no idea what she was required to do with her hair for work at this point in her life, but let's hope she got paid to look like this as opposed to paying for it.

Zosia Mamet

Leaving aside the shoes, this is good, right?

Zosia Mamet in Jill Stuart

And so is this! I like her flirtation with cocktail frocks. She also seems to, as she looks cheerier than ever before. Which, yes, isn't something I intend to judge people on anymore unless the circumstances are extenuating or it ties into juicy rumors (I am only human, y'all). But there's an ease to her mien that coincides with some of the better outfits, and I've decided that's not accidental.

Zosia Mamet

And that, I just love, and wish for under my Crimbo tree.

THIS, she just wore. And I think the photo underscores a LOT of the points I made two slides ago. She looks like an endangered species.

Experimental in 2015: The Women of Girls
The fifth season of Girls starts up early next year -- with a minted bona fide movie star in Adam Driver, whose schedule is going to get hella full pretty soon -- so I figured that made now a fitting time to look back on what the cast members, each with her own distinct sense of style, wore around town in 2015. They've all morphed a little: Allison is still classic but is trying to adopt some edge; Lena is playing around with patterns a lot; Zosia is wearing fewer badly tailored pants and more flirty dresses; and Jemima Kirke is... well, still a LOT of the time dressing like your friendly neighborhood cult leader, but I'd miss that if she changed now.
