Meryl Davis and Charlie White Short Dance

This dress is kind of Old Lady, but it moves beautifully and I think it's not WRONG for a My Fair Lady program. Additionally, I might be in love with him. He's so CHARMING and he seems so NICE and he has so much HAIR.

This costume, I actually really like. It might be a LITTLE Bedazzled? And I also totally already wrote about both of these, but it felt wrong to leave out the gold medalists. I'm really happy for them; they skated beautifully. First American gold in ice dancing ever! I might have cried a little at their medal ceremony.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir Short Dance

And now these two. First, I LOVE these costumes. They could put street shoes on and go to a cocktail party and no one would blink. Now, I know certain factions are up in arms that they took silver, and I have to say, I think the judging was fair here: Meryl and Charlie had a lead coming out of the short, and skated a beautiful long program, and I think they deserved the gold. THAT SAID, that should not take anything away from how truly great and timelessly wonderful Virtue and Moir are -- I really LOVE them, and I was thrilled when they took gold at the previous Olympics. Now the four of them have matching sets, to go with their matching coach. I guess they'll have to wrestle to determine ultimate supremacy or something.

This is not my FAVORITE of her costumes -- it doesn't feel memorable the way the the short dance program is, although of course it is very pretty. But THEY are lovely together, and I am not saying that just because he looks like he could skate the role of Nathan Scott in One Tree Hill On Ice.

I just really want them to get married. Is that so much to ask? (I guess it is.)

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov Short Dance

One of my favorite things about the quick step/foxtrot as the short dance is that EVERYONE looks charming. They all -- well, almost -- dragged out their spangly Gatsby best. I seriously think he might just be wearing a standard tux.

And their free skate -- to Swan Lake, which we've seen SO MANY TIMES -- is truly great. I mean, I guess it's a classic for a reason. And the truth is that I have a major Swan Lake weakness, because I was obsessed with Ashley Wagner's Swan Lake last (?) year, too. FINE. I LOVE SWAN LAKE LEAVE ME ALONE.

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev Short Dance

This program was a wee bit of a mess. But the fun thing was that the feathers on her skirt, on TV, made her dress look like it was radioactive.

And then THIS happened. I do not even know what their free dance was, but they seemed to be....zombie robots? The truth is that I want MORE zombie robots in my ice dancing. Ice dancing is supposed to be as wacked out as possible.

I laugh every time I see this shot. Is this REALLY how you want to open your free dance at the Olympics? Slack-jawed?

This is really just not appealing.

Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam Short Dance

They're the other Canadians and I feel like when Tessa saw this dress, she might have felt a little Single White Female-d. It's VERY similar to her free skate dress.

This looks like an ice-dancing salute to Marchesa.

Julia Zlobina and Alexei Sitnikov short dance

I like that she's in Full Skate Mode and he looks like a dude she just grabbed off the street.

Maia and Alex Shibutani Short Dance

This is indeed not the same short dance dress that she wore at Nationals. This one is pretty, but I think I prefer the other. Thank God she hasn't abandoned her trademark perky ponytail.

This is the same free dance costume, one of two Michael Jackson tributes. It's charming, and apparently at some point their costumes stuck together and she had to extricate herself. I did not even notice this! It's possible I was off looking for my wine glass when that happened, of course. We're deep into wine season.

Evan Bates and Madison Chock Short Dance

They (and Meryl and Charlie) however, are in the same short dance costumes, which makes sense, because these costumes are FABULOUSLY good. Watching them in the kiss and cry, I decided that he is in love with her and she's not that into him, which is based basically on nothing, but I'm holding onto it as truth.

Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte Short Dance

Speaking of people who I decided are in love with each other, these two do a LOT of gazing into each other's eyes. This routine is to 42nd Street, and for that, these costumes are perfect.

But these, I think, are hideous. She looks like her dress was sculpted out of whipped cream and topped with a variety of cherries.

Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland Short Dance

These are the Brits, and this routine was a MESS. That being said, her costume is LOVELY, and might be one of my favorites of the night.

They had the other Michael Jackson routine, and he looks awesome, but I don't know that she looks very Michael Jackson-y. If I were in charge -- why am I not? WHY? -- both dancers would be dressed like Michael Jackson, one glove and all.

Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat Short Dance

These two -- the French team -- are VERY attractive human beings. And when they skated out in this, I said, "god, she looks cheap." And THEN I learned they were dancing to Chicago and that character OUGHT to look cheap. Well played, you two good looking French skaters!

But then they did this. And on one hand: bless you. This competition is disturbingly low on hideous and insane outfits, which are the hallmarks of ice dancing. But on the other hand....

...NO.

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje Short Dance

I also think these two are getting it on. Basically, Heather and I need to write a novel about the Olympics, so I can get the fact that I always want everyone at the Olympics to be secretly in love/trying to murder each other out of my system.

I mean, come on! He IS grabbing her boob!

Nelli Zhiganshina and Alexander Gazsi Short AND Long Program

These two. This was actually really cute. He's the nerdy professor and she's -- per the commentators -- based on Paris Hilton. This is also the first time I've ever seen an ice dancing team wear the same costume for the short and the long program. I guess they saw each dance as one half of a two-part story, but I seriously worried that maybe they'd lost their luggage. Or that I had fallen into a tear in the fabric of space and time.

Danielle O'Brien and Greg Merriman Free Dance

I hope these two met these two and the four of them ran off together.

Sara Hurtado & Adrian Diaz Free Dance

Apologies for the screen-in-screen there -- think of it as a peek at my desktop! -- but I had to include these two. Their routine was about Picasso, and that's why he's dressed like a crazy artist and she is PAINTED with CUBIST EYES. Way to go, you two. Keep up the good work.

ICE DANCING WHEE!

Fab and Fabber: 2014 Winter Olympics Figure Skating: The Ice Dancers
In which you will see both the medalists, and a variety of people that I felt you needed to witness in order to live a full and complete life. We've already covered the pairs, and the men's competition, and all the Americans were covered at Nationals, although the Shibs have new costumes, so I decided to include them. And then because it felt weird to NOT include Meryl and Charlie, given that they won this one (and because I really love Charlie), I tossed them in too. And then I tossed in Bates and Chock because their short dance costumes are gorgeous. In other words: I am just making up the rules as I go along and I have no idea what I'm talking about. Additionally, you might want to review what happened in the previous Olympics. THEY WERE COMPLETELY INSANE. They make all of these costumes look like something you'd rustle up at the mall. And, as always: rumor-mongering and tales of ice-dancing DRAMA welcome. [Photos: ME]
