She nailed this particular short program, and it was really exciting, especially since for a lot of viewers, she just came out of nowhere. I am sure she felt like Lipnitskaya had stolen some of (all of) her thunder earlier this week, so it had to be satisfying on a competitive level to go out there and blow it out. ## Adelina Sotnikova Long Program ![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-32-e1392924409893.xml) This costume is marginally better, but for the SCOURGE of Tights Over Boots. THIS is why Tights Over Skates is DEMONIC. I would like to know why she didn't get marked off for this, though. Didn't we hear in the Team Competition that points are marked off if a skater loses so much as a feather? This seems like it ought to be a deduction and I'm curious as to why it wasn't, if that is in fact the case. I'm not trying to take away from her win -- it was thrilling for her, and it's awesome to see a Russian skater win their first women's skating gold IN Russia, but Johnny Weir (as well as Ashley and everyone one else) seemed to think there was a bit of home-cooking in the judging and I believe him. I think she was somewhat overscored (so does [The New York Post, for that matter](https://nypost.com/2014/02/21/1-5-million-sign-petition-suggesting-putin-fixed-figure-skating?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)). HOWEVER! I also think that she would have squeaked it out without the home-cooking, because that long program is JAMMED WITH DIFFICULTY and she skated lights out, so it doesn't really matter here specifically, beyond being part of The Drama That Is Skating. But of course there there are times when it DOES matter, so it's not an inappropriate convo to be having; obviously, I am not pro The Fix Being In. And the thing is, there's no need to Put The Fix In when, as in this instance, your team doesn't even need it. Fix it WITH YOUR SKILLZ. Also, no, I have no idea why she's wearing beige gloves. ## Kim Yuna Short Program ![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/screen-shot-2014-02-19-at-2-33-22-pm.xml) She looks nervous here, but her short program was beautiful, and so is this dress. I love the chartreuse on her, and the whole thing, really, is as elegant as she is. She's so graceful. It's ALSO elegant and graceful. (With the exception of the tights. I hate you, tights over skates!) Tara Lipinski pointed out that she seemed a bit tight in both her skates, and she did seem a little...I don't know. Tense, yes. I actually love this, despite the vast amount of illusion netting it employs. She skates her short to "Ave Maria," and it IS angelic. I also always have to root for the old ladies in these things. She's nearly 27, you guys. The velvet appears to be groping her -- it's hard to tell from this wacktacular screengrab, but trust me -- and I hate it when the front of the skirt is short enough that it kind of looks like she's wearing Dolphin shorts. That being said: HOW EXCITING that she took bronze? As much as I'd have loved to see an American on the podium, just as an American myself, the three women who won were exciting and deserving, and that's always the point, really, isn't it? (That being said, US figure skating needs to get its house in order. We haven't missed the podium in singles skating entirely since the 30s. CALL MARTA KAROLYI FOR REAL.) ## Yulia Lipnitskaya Short Program ![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-2.xml) She looks fine. Whatever. I feel like the only person in the world who is left cold by her. After she nailed the team competition, I turned to Heather and said, "this kid is going to fall once the ladies competition actually starts," and my instincts were right, BOTH TIMES. I guess my feelings are these: she skates without emotion, and completely without facial expression, which in a Russian skater is weird, as I find them to be -- if I may generalize -- traditionally pretty emotive. And I get that she's young, but we see young skaters skate with emotion ALL THE TIME. Additionally, I find her programs to be kind of manipulative -- tracing a heart on the ice, *we get it* \-- and while her spins are VERY impressive, I think that sometimes her exceptional flexibility is taken to a point where it ceases to be beautiful. For my money, Sasha Cohen's Spin Where She Sticks Her Ankle In Her Ear (a technical skating term) was more aesthetically pleasing, for example. Very little of this is her fault, and I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but I never thought she was the second coming of ladies figure skating and now I feel VINDICATED. ## Yulia Lipnitskaya Long Program ![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-e1392921700268.xml) I also feel like skating as the Little Girl in the Red Coat from *Schindler's List* is kinda....an undertaking that should only be attempted with great delicacy. ## Mao Asada Short Program ![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-24.xml) Poor Mao. Her short program was a mess, but this dress is so, so beautiful. I just wanted you to see the back of this. It is EXQUISITE. She might be my Best Costumed of the Olympics, you guys. I am meh on this particular short program -- I think the rock 'n' roll thing can actually be really, really hard to pull off -- but I think her costume is lovely and the red lip is great. Somewhere, Mirai is happily eating her feelings, I hope. (Although I don't think she would have done any better, frankly, but I am kind of annoyed with Ashley lately and I can't entirely put my finger on why. I get why you'd want a new costume, but why do it SO similar? Either rock last season's costume -- it's what Kate Middleton would do! -- or get a really new one, is my vote. And that's despite the fact that I actually like this costume (for this particular routine, not, like, for the world). If only she'd SKATED like she did at Nationals. She started off so well. There was a little while there when I really thought she might land on the podium, and then she unraveled a little bit. And I know Gracie has a reputation for being a bit of a diva, but that's one of the things I enjoy about her. I love a feisty skater. Good for her. Tara asked Johnny what he thought about it and he was VERY diplomatic, like, "I think they work...for her." Personally, I think the top is great, but the pants could use some BEDAZZLING. Or else it just looks like you're only wearing half of your costume.
