Liu won the women's title US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 Alysa Liu is a tiny baby child at 13, and she kinda reminds me of the Russian tiny baby children who do wonderfully at one Olympics and then are washed up at 18 because no one cares enough about them to teach them how to skate with boobs. She's technically very leap-y and jump-y and bend-y and her artistic skills are lacking. This is not her fault. She is 13\. She hasn't learned how to hold her arms in the footwork section yet as she's BARELY EVEN BEEN ALIVE IN THIS WORLD. (I also....really did not like the music for this routine.) ## Alysa Liu, Short Program ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10072690ae-1548703318.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10072690ae) Alysa Liu performs during her womens short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 24 Jan 2019 Give this child some time to artistically mature before crowning her the hot new thing at THIRTEEN. That is too much pressure on a 13 year old kid and it's going to make it really hard on her when she does grow BECAUSE OF BIOLOGY and she has to re-learn how to jump. Did Tara weigh in on any of this? (She looks cute though -- the gloves really enhance the easy comparison to the young Russian women.) ## Bradie Tennell, Free Skate (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073506az-1548703342.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073506az) Bradie Tennell performs in the women's free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 Yes, this was to *Romeo and Juliet.* I wish someone would go out there with a tiny medieval headdress on! ## Bradie Tennell Short Program ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10072672af-1548703274.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10072672af) Bradie Tennell performs during her women's short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 24 Jan 2019 This skate was to something called "REBIRTH" and I LOVE this costume. It's both traditional and slightly weird, while still being pretty. The program is more modern that we saw on her last year -- [remember, she went full literal Cinderella?](https://gofugyourself.com/photos/us-figure-skating-national-championships/us-championships-figure-skating-san-jose-usa-05-jan-2018-7?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) (that is also the post where I got enraged that Ross Miner didn't get to go to the Olympics and I stand by that although in retrospect Adam Rippon was amazing so it all worked out!) -- and it was a welcome level up in terms of nuance. ## Mariah Bell, Free Skate (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_9976071cv-1548703229.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Aflo/REX/Shutterstock (9976071cv) Mariah Bell (USA) - Figure Skating : ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018 NHK Trophy, Women's Free Skating at Hiroshima Prefectural Sports Center, Hiroshima, Japan. ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, Hiroshima, Japan - 10 Nov 2018 This pic is from a previous competition because all the snaps of her wearing this costume at Nationals didn't show it off at all. It's VERY pretty. (She gets the Ashley Wagner Award from me, which is for the fact that costumes are always reliably quite beautiful.) Mariah finished third, but of the three top women, I actually think she feels like the most COMPLETE skater, if all goes as planned for everyone -- which of course it never does. ## Mariah Bell Short Program ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10072672am-1548703288.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10072672am) Mariah Bell performs her women's short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 24 Jan 2019 All you need to know here is that her short program is to music sung by Celine Dion and choreographed by Adam Rippon. These facts make me feel like Mariah Bell and I would get along swimmingly. ## Deanna Stellato and Nathan Bartholomay, free skate (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073999aa-1548703440.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073999aa) Deanna Stellato, Nathan Bartholomay. Deanna Stellato and Nathan Bartholomay perform in the pairs free skate program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 I continue to reject how male pairs skaters like to pretend they're just some DUDES who wandered onto the ice and aren't, like, gonna wear a costume. They all end up looking like your server at the Olive Garden. (She also, btw, is wearing like literally four tablespoons of glitter on her eyelids.) ## Deanna Stellato Dudek and Nathan Bartholomay, Pairs Short Program (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10072676p-1548703296.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10072676p) Deanna Stellato Dudek, Nathan Bartolomay. Deanna Stellato Dudek and Nathan Bartholomay perform in the pairs short program during the U.S. Figure Skating championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 24 Jan 2019 It's like he's just skating out there to see if she wants more breadsticks. ## Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier, Pairs Short (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10072676t-1548703309.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10072676t) Haven Denney, Brandon Frazier. That seems....ill-advised. I love this pic because it's like they're both putting their hands up at the end of a Top Chef Quick Fire Challenge. (They're actually skating to swing music, so it's all very apt.) ## Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc, pairs Free Skate (First Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073506bq-1548703354.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073506bq) Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc perform during their pairs free skate program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 [These two sweet summer children LOVE CATSUITS](https://gofugyourself.com/photos/us-figure-skating-national-championships/us-championships-figure-skating-san-jose-usa-04-jan-2018?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). They wore them last year, too! ## Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker, rhythm dance (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073506w-1548706065.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073506w) Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker perform their rhythm dance program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 MORE men should skate in velvet blazers. *This guy* doesn't work at the Olive Garden. At the very least, this guy is working at the dueling piano bar. ## Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker, Free Dance (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_9991406bc-1548703262.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by GUILLAUME HORCAJUELO/EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock (9991406bc) Kaitlin Hawayek (R) and Jean-Luc Baker (L) of the USA perform their Free Dance routine during the Ice Dance competition of the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Internationaux de France in Grenoble, France, 24 November 2018\. ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Internationaux de France in Grenoble - 24 Nov 2018 These two finished third in ice dancing, and our photo services did not get any snaps of them from this weekend -- this shot is from the Grand Prix Internationaux de France in November, and it's basically the same outfits, although she wore what looked like greyer hose at Nationals. I do not think that was the correct edit, but I love the ombre skirt. (This skate seems to be mostly about FEELINGS, which is my favorite kind of ice dance.) ## Madison Chock and Evan Bates, (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073506n-1548703367.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073506n) Madison Chock and Evan Bates perform their rhythm dance program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 I didn't see the short program for ice dancing, but I assume this was a salute to David Hasselhoff? ## Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Free Dance (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074182v-1548703475.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074182v) Madison Chock and Evan Bates perform their free dance program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 This was skated to an Elvis medley, and her dress is even sparklier than it looks here. ## Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Free Dance (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074182w-1548703487.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074182w) Madison Chock and Evan Bates perform their free dance program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 Given the tradition of Elvis Painted on Velvet, his velvet suit is pleasing to me -- I think they both look really great, to be honest -- but wish they'd leaned in and gone for the white caped jumpsuit. (I also love them together. Is that wrong? I hope not.) ## Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, rhythm dance (First Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073538d-1548703377.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073538d) Madison Hubbell, Zachary Donohue. Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue perform in the rhythm dance program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 25 Jan 2019 I never noticed until today that Madison kind of looks like Amy Schumer if she were an ice-dancer. (Also, there are a lot of American ice-dancing Madisons) ## Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, free dance (First Place) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074182l-1548703462.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074182l) Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue perform their free dance program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 This free dance was VERRRRRRRRRY dramatic. The opening is as if *Romeo and Juliet* was done by the people who did *300\.* They say that section is supposed to feel like a movie trailer and it certainly, does but it's also....very over the top. On the other hand, ice dancing SHOULD BE over the top. You should know that this program also includes Leonardo diCaprio spoken word. Hubbell and Donohue are very good -- they won -- but I think the music in this program really over shadows their skating, and the color of her dress is really bland considering how bombastic the program is. ## Nathan Chen, short program (First Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073995o-1548703418.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073995o) Nathan Chen performs in the men's short program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 I literally own this top -- with short sleeves -- from J Crew. Nathan Chen, taking the crown of I Just Bought This From Banana Republic from Evan Lysacek, courtesy again of Vera Wang. ## Nathan Chen, free skate (First Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074738p-1548703498.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074738p) Nathan Chen performs during the men's free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 27 Jan 2019 SKATING ABS! That is a rare and welcome sight. (Nathan Chen is VERY cute. I could LITERALLY be his mom, very easily, so I'm merely making this observation as someone who remembers what it was like to be a young human woman. That said, if I were 20 years old, I would be so into him. He's so cute and talented and has great hair.) ## Nathan Chen, free skate (First Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074738s-1548703511.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Paul Sancya/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074738s) Nathan Chen performs during the men's free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 27 Jan 2019 This is, yes, just a nice ski sweather and black pants, but the truth is that Nathan Chen skated LIGHTS OUT and does not need a costume. Also, I learned on the telecast that it literally *is* just a sweater -- he had a different costume earlier in the morning and he was uncomfortable in it and ditched it. It was a kind of cool color-blocked black and orange thing, but given that he won the hell out of this, he was right to swap. He is REAL GOOD, Y'ALL. ## Vincent Zhou, short program (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073995u-1548703428.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073995u) Vincent Zhou performs in the men's short program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 "I love ommmmmmmbreeeeee!" ## Vincent Zhou, free skate (Second Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074848k-1548703522.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074848k) Vincent Zhou performs in the men's free skate during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 27 Jan 2019 I feel bad for Vincent having to follow Nathan. Also: I feel like Marhershala Ali could wear this jacket to an event and people would be into it, and by "people," I mean me. ## Jason Brown Short Program (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10073999o-1548703451.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10073999o) Jason Brown performs in the men's short program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 26 Jan 2019 Jason Brown looks so much like Andy Samberg now that he's cut his hair. Please tell me that he skated this routine to the sounds and songs of Lonely Island -- a nice little Dick In A Box/I'm On a Boat/Chronicles of Narnia medley. (Wiki tells me it's actually a skate to something called LOVE IS A BITCH, and that and the haircut makes me worried that maybe Jason is Going Through Some Stuff!) ## Jason Brown free skate (Third Place) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_10074848o-1548703531.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Carlos Osorio/AP/REX/Shutterstock (10074848o) Jason Brown performs in the men's free skate during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in Detroit US Championships Figure Skating, Detroit, USA - 27 Jan 2019 Just looking at this pic, I decided it was a skate about Pacey Witter. (It was actually a medley of Simon and Garfunkel.) (I do love Jason Brown.) But we've got time to work on that for later, kids! Just think about it -- it could be transcendent. See you at World's!
