This is a great example of a dress I really WANT to like, because obvious elements are present that appeal to the magpie in me, but it doesn't QUITE gel? Mostly it looks bunchy in the front, and I find that distracting...

... but her gilded spine was not great either. (I know they needed to do SOMETHING with a zipper, but... was all of this the best answer?)

I LOVE this dress. THAT is a real Girl on Fire situation. But it's so intricate and fancy, and then the shoes feel like something you wear to a 9 a.m. job interview. She should have gone with gold...

... because it would tie in with this little flash on the back. I think she could've found something gold that was still low-profile enough not to compete with the dress. It doesn't have to be those Louboutin peep-toes that are all spikes (remember those?!? Ah, I love a vicious shoe).

Shailene was still two years away from the premiere of Divergent, the OTHER big dystopian YA series that got turned into movies around this era. It did not fare as well (didn't they just... never make the intended fourth and final film?). Anyway, much like the Divergent films, this seems to start out fine and then just kind of... flops into a shapeless sack.

This feels a little Madonna-lite to me -- a bustier, but not TOO much of one. I like this hair on Miley a lot, though, and the very very light boho and punk influences work on her. This was back before everything she did had to be SO VERY MUCH.

Icy and pretty, but this is sort of the opposite of Elizabeth Banks -- this is a chance for a hit of color on her feet, rather than a competing metal.

I will always remember her from All My Children, when she played Lily Montgomery, who had autism. She was very affecting in that part. She will always be frozen in time at that age, for me, a bit, but once I get over that she DOES look great in this very grown-up dress. (She was also 21 at the time; she's just, as I said, forever about 14 in my brain unless I really stop and think about it.)

I mostly really like this, but would have enjoyed an option without the netting.

She looks like she's at a Hamptons garden party. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a discordant thing for this particular event.

Aw, young Amandla! Rocking the sequins and that FACE! She was very good in The Hate U Give. (She's also about to be in the Dear Evan Hansen movie.)

Rita looks like a Vogue editor on her way to the Altuzarra show.

The next time anyone does a Superman multiverse story, I feel like he should join the cabal as one of the Supermen. He has echoes of all of them.

Note to self: Never drink and sew.

She accessorized the HELL out of this, and the color is so good that it makes up for the fact that the dress itself is technically kind of meh.

Very nice. Everything is in order here.

... Really?

I imagine Kris showing them this photo later in a darkened war room, as part of a Power Point presentation on red-carpet mojo. "What were you doing?" she would hiss, ordering an assistant to then smack the table with their palm. "You NEVER let them catch you unprepared. VENEER. ALWAYS." Kendall's dress is pretty cute. Kylie actually also looks nice, but just like she's New At This. It is always a real trip seeing Kylie's photos from before she really became part of the Kard machine.

That's beautiful. This is the London premiere, and feels like someone said, "Let's take a second crack at gold, okay?" What you can't see here very well is that the dress has an approximated snakeskin look that's really neat. Hutcherson looks like they sent the wrong shirt and tie.

The perplexing thing here is the shoe size. She was in New York! SOMEONE could have run to Saks and bought out the shoe floor.

I don't LOVE this whole thing, but it's at least interesting? I love the era before it was all Dior all the time, because it really was more playful.

FINALLY, she eventually went with something close to "fire." Although... like fire, it burns.
