She carries herself like such a movie star, even if you can name her actual good movies on one hand. If anyone's wondering why Chicago got repeatedly feted at the Oscars (not that it wasn't a good movie, but still), it's likely because the ceremony's EPs also produced that movie. It was so strange to me, in fact, that the Oscars were supposed to be a celebration of music in movies, and yet the big tribute involved performances of three songs that were written for the theater, and which were staged for the telecast very dully, without any clever nods to the films they were in -- just montages of clips preceding each, which ended up being really repetitive. As I said on Twitter, as much as I disliked the job MacFarlane did with his comedy, most of the problems (including that one) tie back to a complete, utter exec-producer fail.
Crisp and clean and very Charlize. It's similar to what we've seen before, but she wears it uniquely her way.

You pointed out, correctly, that the harsher red-carpet lighting didn't flatter this fabric as well as the lighting at the Marchesa show. But it still makes one hell of a statement.
Better than she's looked in a long, long time.
Way to kill it, Jane. Others are feeling the burn.

She's here because, although she didn't put up her hair, she branched out of her favorite silhouette and did a livelier version of a comfort-color.

In the end, even WITH her fall on the stairs, she'll like these photos better in ten years than Hathaway will hers.

Stunning from head to toe.
This was such a refreshing surprise. Carolina Herrera provided the gown, and I bet a few other people wish they'd called her now.
She always makes such unusual choices, which we appreciate.
She killed me dead in this.
Australia had a pretty damn good night, sartorially.

She's here for the fact that a lot of you really dug this, even with that low-hanging bodice; also, it's a big statement from someone who usually doesn't make one, and it's fitted quite well on someone who usually doesn't get it quite so right.
She is here for obvious reasons. No, Intern George didn't bribe us. That Naeem Khan is perfection.
This was unusual and cool in all -- or most of -- the right ways. Sure, you could prune a detail or two, but in the end nothing ruined it for me.
Many of you liked this for its delicate color and gold detail; I didn't care for it because the bodice bunched up every time she moved around and left little pinched lumps of fabric. I also thought the hair and makeup made her look old. So we'll put her in both polls.
You guys liked this better than we did -- I don't think the froof and the silhouette are super flattering on her, but Fug Nation stood up for Octavia, so into both polls she goes.
Another one where you were nicer than we were: Many of you argued in favor of the ruffle and were knocked out by the color; though we agree on that last point, the design of the explosive ruffle and the cut of the boring sheath put this in the "no" column for us.
A lot of us were divided on this one. I like it better in pictures than I did in motion, and I like other versions of this dress a tad better than this. But then I look at this for a second and I think, yeah, but I wouldn't kick THAT dress out of bed for watching "Real Housewives."

I hated this dress. A lot. Which brings us to L'Affair Hathaway: Apparently, the dress she pickedwas deemed too similar, at the last minute, to Amanda Seyfried's McQueen (and also a little bit to Allison Williams'). My feelings on this are... look, that dress, from pictures, is way better than this one. And YOU are the nominee. YOU are the presumptive winner. It's YOUR photograph on-stage holding the Oscar that people will remember. Wear the better outfit, and be the bigger person -- frankly, changing at the last second for that reason risks coming off petty, and here it led to her having to make a big deal out of it by issuing an apology to Valentino, which makes her look like she pulled a diva move. I just think if she'd worn it, been gracious and good-humored about any perceived similarities, and gone up and accepted her Oscar looking exactly the way she wanted to, everything would have blown over and been fine. It was her night, and Amanda wouldn't have stolen it.
I was getting a little tired of her shtick, but then she wore this and it's like... a lukewarm, molding version of her shtick, which is even worse.
It's an atrocious fit, poorly styled. Period.
Ditto. I can't even.

Finally, a place where Cosmo's infamous "Um, Vagina?" headline is appropriate.
Shoulder-pad boobs are not okay.
I was going to put her in both polls, but actually, 82 percent of you ended up siding with me in being disappointed by this and its bagginess, and how it's mostly uninspired for a dress that clearly thinks it's an A+.

It's not that the dress was so bad, it's that... sigh. She looked unkempt, clammy, and out of it.
Can she breathe in that thing? Or swallow?
