This dress is one of those that looks like it's made of SEXY FISH SCALES. Which manages to be both pretty and a little weird to me -- and, in fairness, I think "pretty and a little weird" is kind of Cate's usual sartorial MO.

But I hate the back. It looks like it was meant to be open-backed and someone decided at the last minute to tack some satin in there. If Cate Blanchett can work a dress that's open to her navel, she can work an open back...even just theoretically.

But the color detailing is amazing, and I suspect this is one of those things that looks tremendous in person and just doesn't translate the way the wearer, or her stylist, would hope. Not a bad idea to burn that off now, honestly.
