Demi loves a Statement Shoulder. She loves a high-waisted pant. She loves a slightly boxy blazer that makes her look EVER SO SLIGHTLY like a newscaster. This whole outfit is very on-brand for Demi Lovato. And to a point, it works on her. It's got the edge she's been cultivating with her latest album. But I feel like a lot of her outfits that are ostensibly A Little Bit Rock and Roll are also A Little Bit Local News Emmys -- a weird hybrid, to be sure, but I find that so is her style.

Her hair and makeup are great, at least. I feel like there's no real reason why I should think the blazer and the pants DON'T go together, and yet they're not playing in harmony for me, so I'm going to enjoy what her head is doing instead.

This performance outfit is a composite of the men's and women's bathroom signs, intended as a message of support to transgender people and the fight for gender-neutral restrooms. She and Nick Jonas canceled a concert recently in North Carolina over the issue. Good for her for doing more than just pay lip service to an issue she obviously believes in really strongly.
