Viewed on its own, I think this dress is lovely. It really is. The dark red is, as they say, hot for fall -- when we went to all the shows in February, it was everywhere -- and it's slinky and sparkly and should be a showstopper. But... why isn't it? I think it's the styling. Specifically, the styling of her head, which looks like she is mired somewhere between Newscaster At Local Emmys and Wife Of Politician Who Needs To Shake Hands And Raise Money.

Right? It's not the color of the hair; it's the shape of the updo and the frozen white smile. The vibe of this picture feels so much like, "We haven't shared a bedroom since our kids went to college, but I need to look like my marriage is happy on the campaign trail, so if you can grit your teeth and get through this then I'll buy you a Mercedes."

"Um, can you two stand a little closer together, please?" "Yes, but only if you shoot us from an angle that makes us look like we're the same height." "Yes, sir, Mr. Clooney. One second while we get out the crate we use to shoot Tom Cruise..."
