# Fug or Fab the Oscar Moment: Jennifer Hudson's (In)Famous Bolero

This bolero. The second-most-famous pop-culture use "bolero" behind, obviously, [Bolero](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/torvill-and-dean-got-perfect-6s-for-bolero-on-feb-14-1984-02-2021/). Jennifer Hudson, plucked from an early *American Idol* exit and cast in *Dreamgirls*, was a relative newbie to all this and somewhere along the line her team agreed to let Andre Leon Talley -- backed by *Vogue* \-- take her under his wing for the Oscars. He pushed hard on this brown Oscar de la Renta and gold jacket; [Hudson allegedly didn't like it, and so her stylist Jessica Paster wisely commissioned a custom Cavalli instead](https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2007-03-04-0703040577-story.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). A squabble ensued, and Hudson ended up wearing this on the red carpet -- but changing into the Cavalli the SECOND that Oscar was in her hand. I thought we could take a look at the dress and see if it's as bad as we remember, and whether we, too, would have discarded it like a wedding ring that has been tainted with poison. (RIP, *Passions*.)
