## Agent Dream Sequence

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-1-1024x576.jpg)

I'm jumping to the beginning of episode 9 for a second, just because. It opened with a dream sequence -- Peggy was SPOILER unconscious -- in which we're at first in a gorgeous black-and-white film, and it teaches us that Hayley Atwell is perfection in all hues or lack thereof.

## Agent Brother

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-2-1024x576.jpg)

Her dead brother pops up to remind Peggy that she is living the live of danger and adventure that SHE always wanted, not simply enacting his dream for her. I know the backstory here is that she loved him and his death gave her the courage to blah blah blah, but I still find it sort of boring -- especially as Dream Peggy is the one saying that she only did any of this because the brother tried to trick her into it and then died to galvanize her. THAT is an obvious deliberate oversimplification from her, but still. In Dreamo Veritas, to some degree, and it's not my favorite aspect of her backstory. I don't like Peggy doubting her own destiny.

I am mostly only showing you this, though, because this actor is the OPPOSITE of Chad Michael Murray. He acts these scenes as if he is holding his eyes as far open as possible -- as if the actual direction was, "WE HAVE TO BALANCE OUT CHAD'S SQUINT. DO NOT EVEN BLINK."

## Agent Song and Dance

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-3-1024x576.jpg)

And then we get a technicolor musical number, in which Peggy dances first with Jason, then with Sousa -- who gallantly chucks away his crutch -- and it SOUNDS like all the actors are indeed singing. The gist of the song is, "PICK ONE, MY GOD, SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT BUT JUST GET ON WITH IT. THERE IS SEX TO BE DONE."

## Agent Guest Star

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-4-1024x576.jpg)

There are also appearances from Dottie Underwood and last season's waitress pal, Angie. Dottie is just taunting Peggy from her own subconscious, but Angie is leading Peggy's mind through its exercises urging her to shampoo or get out of the shower.

## Agent Busby Berkeley

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-5-1024x576.jpg)

This is how I want Jarvis to enter every room, at all times. It will happen in the Agent Carter/Galavant crossover that's happening in my mind, in which he will become King Richard's butler.

## Agent Ana

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-1.png)

Okay, back to the plot: We get a flashback to Ana Jarvis first getting wind of Peggy Carter's existence -- Jarvis cheerfully tells her that he thinks Peggy is different than Howard's other women acquaintances because "he actually respects her" -- and of course Ana takes all this in gently and intelligently while wearing a gorgeous outfit that is perfect on her. Lotte Verbeek should wear green forever.

## Agent False Reassurances

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-3.png)

These two are great. He loves her, she loves him, neither one of them tries to change the other. He sunnily assures her that Peggy will keep him safe and vice versa, and she warns him not to make promises he can't keep -- echoing what he said to her in the last episode, before he fell into the trap that led to Ana getting shot by Whitney Frost. Then Jarvis turns on their favorite radio show and we cut to him angrily trying to fix Ana's hospital room radio, which isn't working. Poor Jarvis. What would he say if he knew what would become of his legacy in "Age of Ultron"?

## Agent Sniffle

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-11.png)

Jarvis is hot in his unending grief. James D'Arcy is wonderful as he fears for Ana and then starts promising her the moon if she'll just wake up. He promises to wear a necktie she knitted, believe in horoscopes, get a Bernese mountain dog. She of course wakes up and he scurries off to get a doctor... but not before he remembers that giving her a kiss is the most important thing. I wish Ana had been used better with Peggy -- this show did friendship very well in season one, and could've replicated that here. It might also have been interesting if Peggy was conflicted about using Jarvis to help her because of her attachment to Ana, wanting to protect them both, etc.

OH AND: Jarvis finds out -- and this is something I assumed as soon as Ana got shot, actually -- that Ana now cannot have kids, due to her injuries. I hope they use Zero Matter to repair her. But also, and this is just a curiosity: How old are Ana and Jarvis meant to be? James D'Arcy is 40, Lotte is 32\. Are they playing their ages? Are we meant to think they'd been putting off having kids, or trying this whole time, or...? I'm not throwing shade on people waiting to have kids; it was just a lot less common in those days, is all. As crushing as this blow would be, I can't totally tell from their story how invested they were in having them to begin with, and something about the way they function as a couple almost seemed like there wasn't room for other people in there anyway. It's just weird sometimes to watch a TV couple grieve something you've never known them to want. Much less to have that grief drive one of them INSANE. Spoiler.

## Agent Research

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-9.png)

Whitney handcuffs Jason to a variety of things, and has done studies on how long he stays solid between doses of Zero Matter. She also lets him read her magnum opus, *All The Rats I Killed*, so that she can convince him that the two of them need to work together.

## Agent Well-Dressed

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-10.png)

This actress wears basically every color and textile well. Whitney is obsessed with Zero Matter, also, yammering on about how she can hear its voice in her head telling her what to do. Jason is at once awed, secretly in agreement, and horrified.

## Agent Manfredi

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-5.png)

Ken Marino, meanwhile, is her right-hand man now, and he adores her. There is actually a very sweet scene -- well, except that they're evil -- where he refuses to let her hide her Voldemark, and tells her that she's more beautiful than ever. Throughout, he is totally unfazed by any of this crazy shit happening around them, in a way that I find delightful even if Marino's performance is INCREDIBLY INCREDIBLY broad. (Not that he's in bad company there; Dominic Cooper is hardly low-key as Howard.) Also, Manfredi cooks meatballs for his mother and gets into a huge fight with her over his rogue inclusion of garlic...

## Agent Panting

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-7.png)

... only to turn around and see that Peggy and Sousa have knocked out all his henchmen, and that both of them look EXTREMELY GOOD rumpled and tired and yet also invigorated. Peggy, Sousa, please look at each other and know that you could see each other like this EVERY MORNING and several other times of day as well depending on your schedules.

## Agent Squint

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-8.png)

Squint has been required to find dirt on Peggy, so he goes and fakes drunk with an old chum in the UK so that he can get a confidential file that lists all these dastardly exploits that Agent M. Carter got up to during the war. If that seems convenient, it probably is -- something Peggy points out to him when he drops by and smugly waves the file under her nose. She is basically like, "Whatever, nice try, you're ridiculous now," and swans away. It's worth noting that CMM's attempts at playing Drunk Off His Tree are even broader than Ken Marino's mobster act. Or the Great Wall of China.

## Agent Hoodwink

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-12.png)

These two rope Dr. Samberly into faking two uranium rods, which they can return to Whitney Frost in exchange for Jason. Everyone seems to act like this exchange, with a horcrux and a known mobster, will go down without a hitch and ABSOLUTELY on the up-and-up from that side. Which seems hopelessly naive.

## Agent Double Cross

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-14.png)

And in fact IS naive. Peggy gets Jason in her truck, but then the briefcase falls open -- their inspector hadn't closed it tightly -- and the rods drop out and nothing happens, so Whitney knows they're a fake. Peggy et al get away in the truck, with Jason's Port-a-Body machine, at which point he reveals that he's TOTES solid now y'all and pulls a gun on them. He threatens to blow Peggy to smithereens if Sousa doesn't tell him where the real rods are, and over Peggy's objections, Sousa does. Because of course. Then Jason hops out and runs off to Whitney's car, which has been tailing them non-aggressively and at a safe distance. So basically, Whitters planned to "give" them Jason and then have Jason return himself after some shenanigans... and yet, does this even make sense? Because Jason's only leverage here is the location of the real rods, so this means Whitney had to have anticipated she'd get fakes, and yet... nothing in her behavior suggested she believed they were fake even after her tester confirmed them as real... I am just not sure what the internal logic is here. It feels like they made everyone's plans and motivations fit the plot twists they needed, rather than thinking through WHY Whitney knew to tail them slowly (as if lying in wait, something Peggy and Sousa both comment on), and why .... well, why anything. Most of what happens only quite makes sense if everyone involved correctly predicted the plot but pretended not to have.

## Agent Squint

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-15.png)

I just wanted you to revel in this one more time. Here, he is reacting to eavesdropping on Kurtwood Smith, learning that Kurtwood is in league with Whitney, and then promptly losing his upper hand when he confronts Kurt without a weapon and Kurt memory-zaps him and leaves him in the lab. Which ALSO doesn't make sense. Vernon presumably only knows what that machine does because Ray Wise complained about his memory being wiped, but the fact that he REGAINED it eventually suggests that Kurt would know Squint's would return as well. So why didn't he shoot Squint, or feed him a line about his own erratic behavior before throwing him in lockup? Or gagging him and tying him up in a closet? No, just leave him behind for people to find. Sure.

## Agent Sparks

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-16.png)

These two then of course DO find Jack and they all come up with a plan to blow up Whitney Frost's Zero Matter porthole, thanks to Howard Stark CONVENIENTLY sending through a message with instructions for how to build a Gamma Cannon to aim right at it. Thanks, Howard. Your broomstick of Contrivance flew you here just in time.

Peggy and Sousa get into it over his unwillingness to let Jason shoot her in the face. Peggy, I think, believed Jason wouldn't have done it. Anyway, Sousa flips the script on her and asks if she'd have let Jason shoot Sousa, and she can't answer, and they almost make out again until CMM goes all C3PO on them.

## Agent Delightful

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-17.png)

Dr. Sanderly's obsession with Rose is a marvel. This actor is extremely funny. He's braggy about his science skills, bitter that nobody ever seems to want him to come into the field, and yet not extremely brave enough to be of use there.

## Agent Crack

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-18.png)

Lest you doubt her mad SCIENCE!!!, Whitney correctly replicates the experiment and blows open the Zero Matter porthole. There is no reasonable explanation for why it does not, as it did the first time, suck up everything (except the camera) around it.

## Agent Ya Burnt

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-19.png)

It does, however, suck up Jason. He has to float up to the sky and get zapped inside the vortex while Whitney is left on the ground, alone, looking gorgeous but screaming, "WHAT ABOUT MEEEEEE? IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MEEEEEEE." At this point, the show seems to have embraced that Zero Matter gets to behave with no consistency from scene to scene or person to person. That is CONVENIENT.

## Agent Cannon

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-20.png)

In case you wonder what a Gamma Cannon looks like. Basically, we get three dudes in the desert with a massive metal wang. Figures. And yes, they shoot it off, and yes, it closes up the porthole.

Why isn't Peggy there? Well, you see, Jarvis has suffered a rage fog. He's so angry that Whitney ruined his wife's reproductive organs that he's decided to kill her -- he even left Rose with his will and a box of goodies with which to coddle Ana -- and so he stole a car and went to find her and end her life and/or be turned into goo. Peggy had to then hop in the cannon's truck and give chase, so she didn't get to do any of the fun stuff.

## Agent MIgraine

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-21.png)

Jason gets dumped back down in a crater, positively frothing with Zero Matter. Whitney is annoyed, and feeling jilted, but she figures it's no big deal -- he's just a vessel, and if he can take the matter from her, surely she can suck it back out of him somehow. We still have no sense of what it IS, what it wants. The penultimate episode feels a bit late to be scratching my head and going, "I have no idea what the hell that stuff's purpose even is. Or is it an entity? A deity? HELP."

## Agent Bang

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-season-2-episode-8-recap-23.png)

Jarvis, though, runs up and FULL-ON PLUGS WHITNEY. He is hot when sad AND hot when vengeful, even if I don't entirely buy that he would flip so hard and pull the trigger on a person. Jarvis isn't an "eye for an eye" kind of person, and it looks weird on him-- again, especially because it's all over the crushing loss of something that I could swear we never knew he cared about in the first place.

Whitney decides to keep them alive, though, because she realizes that to control Jason is to imperil the people he loves. This is only a rationale for keeping Peggy -- I don't believe for a second that she thinks Jason would go out on a very far limb for Jarvis, so it's nonsensical to me that she doesn't liquefy him, as thrilled as I am that she doesn't. It's been too long since she ran somebody off the planet.

## Agent Magic

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-6-1024x576.jpg)

Luckily -- as we head into the second hour -- Peg has a hot wire in her belt that she can use to burn through chains. So THAT'S why she keeps wearing all those trousers. They're HOT PANTS. (Zing.)

## Agent Freaky As Hell

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-7-1024x576.jpg)

Jason's eyes go all Dark With Voldematter as he begs Whitney to let him get away, because he is losing control and it's dangerous. Whitney is all, "Pfft, whatever, you're fine." But they do get out of the car to provide him a little extra motivation, which is when they discover that Peg and Jarvis have fled. Lucky for her, they're in the middle of nowhere, so after Manfredi kills the old driver he sends a new one back to track them. Piece of cake.

## Agent Argument

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-8-1024x576.jpg)

While Peggy and Jarvis hike through the desert, she is angry at him for acting out of revenge and putting them all at risk. He then spits back some pretty unkind mockery which I find TOTALLY off-point for the Jarv even in anger, all of which is meant to service a Come to Jesus. She lets him have it -- eerily quietly and with great emotion -- for treating these outings like a lark, or an escape, before going home to his perfect life that has known no real loss, and about how he doesn't carry the burden of any of this because to him it's dip in, dip out. She says JUST ENOUGH that Jarvis blurts out the truth about Ana's womb -- a truth that he hasn't even told Ana, because he is too scared of upsetting her. In the end, the two essentially forgive each other, overpower the henchmen who return for them in the large van, and hop in together.

## Agent Trap

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-9-1024x576.jpg)

Lots to cover here: Kurtwood Smith sends henchman to kill whoever set off the Gamma Cannon. Squint tricks the henchmen into believing he's being held at gunpoint by Sousa and the good doc, and yada yada yada they all take Sousa and Sanderly back to the SSR and throw them in a cell. THEN they use this to manipulate Kurtwood: Whitney wants the cannon, but Squint tells Kurtwood they need to use Sousa and Sanderly to recharge the cannon and then blast WHITNEY with it so that she no longer controls them. Are you still with me? There are layers of deception here, and this is the first: Kurtwood thinks Squint is on his side, and that the goal is to eradicate Whitney.

## Agent Skeptical

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-10-1024x576.jpg)

Peggy is enraged, especially when Kurtwood practically dances around proclaiming himself immune to their efforts to dethrone him, now that they all have dirt on each other. It is a really bad idea to gloat, Kurtwood. Death comes to gloaters.

## Agent Scam

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-12-1024x576.jpg)

Ruse No. 2: They actually need more time to recharge the cannon, so Squint convinces Kurtwood to let him deliver that message to an impatient Whitney. Instead, he tells Whitney that Kurtwood plans to kill her with it, and offers salvation in exchange for a seat at the Arena Club table in the room where it happens. Kurtwood wanted him to wait for it, but he is no Mr. Burr, sir.

## Agent Weird

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-11-1024x576.jpg)

Pause for a sec to discuss this thing I noticed, which is totally not worth a digression but we're here now: So, CMM gets up from a cross-legged sit, and instead of uncrossing his legs first and then standing, he stands on the bottom leg and then uncrosses them once he's 3/4 of the way upright. Which might happen more often than I imagine, but it just looked awk, so I decided to imagine he spent hours imagining how Agent Squint would do it and that he had a whole mental Bible that outlined why this was exactly how he would rise that way.

## Agent Van

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-13-1024x576.jpg)

Props to the props folks -- or set designers, etc -- because all the old-time cars are awesome. This one had a sliding back door instead of one that opened. Super cool.

## Agent Shucks

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-14-1024x576.jpg)

Sanderly lets slip that Squint asked him to turn the cannon into a bomb with a remote detonator, so Peggy and Sousa realize that CMM intends to blow everyone -- Kurtwood and Jason included -- to bits. LOTS of threats to blow people to tiny pieces here this week.

## Agent Nancy Drew

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-15-1024x576.jpg)

Ana sleuths that Jarvis has a) ditched Peggy on Peggy's orders, and b) been keeping a secret. She orders him back to Peg's side to be of whatever help he can, and then demands that he level with her about the other secret. The camera pulls away as Jarvis begins to tell her about her medical complication. I sort of wish it had stayed and Ana had been all, "CHILDREN? Ew."

## Agent Rescue

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-16-1024x576.jpg)

Sousa has Sanderly build a decide jamming the remote detonator, while Peggy runs inside to save Jason. He begs her to leave because he's PRETTY SURE he's about to explode like a dire case of [kopfegeschlagen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soapdish?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), but she won't, so he forcibly gives her the slip. Peg is aggravated, but leaves, because what else can she do. Might as well go back to the dude who ISN'T going to laterally explore the next four houses. (Seriously, between Soapdish and Hamilton... if only they could COMBINE THOSE TWO THINGS into one superproduction. I would speak of nothing else.)

## Agent Gotcha

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-17-1024x576.jpg)

Squint greatly enjoys letting Kurtwood know that he's been double-crossed, and then he leaves as Whitney prepares to dispose of Kurtwood via Death Goop, which is, I think, also known as Liquid Paltrow. Meanwhile, outside, CMM catches them jamming the signal and easily coerces Sanderly into undoing it so that he can make them all go boom. Back inside, Kurtwood notices that the cannon has been remotely activated, and starts laughing to Frost that she's been had. She is enraged, but unlike other times she's been required to save her own skin, she does not suddenly turn the room to dust with Zero Matter. Seriously, can't she just put her hand on that thing and disintegrate it?

## Agent Hulk Smash

![agent carter recap season 2 episode 8 9](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-18-1024x576.jpg)

Well, she's busy anyway: Jason bursts in at this moment and FINALLY SOMETHING GOES BOOM AT LAST. I'm not happy it was Jason, of course, but there has been so much talk of it and yet so little action on that front. Jason basically turns inside out as the Zero Matter bursts out of him, and we leave for the week not knowing whether a) the bomb will go off, b) who will be alive at the end of it all, and c) whether Jarvis made it there to help. And d) what Zero Matter is, or e) what it wants, or f) whether it can explain why it cracked Whitney's face but not Jason's until right this second, or g) anything, or h) how Dottie Underwood, seeker of the original Arena Club pin, connects to it. We have one episode to go, folks. I don't care if it never answers that as long as Peggy and Sousa get into each other. Knowing this show is likely to die, I need some liplock. Fast.

[Fug the Show: Agent Carter recap, season 2, episodes 8 and 9ABC chief Paul Lee got the boot recently, and two of my TV loves were cited as reasons: Galavant, and Agent Carter, short-run shows with critical acclaim but tiny -- albeit loyal -- audiences, which he kept alive against perhaps all business sense. This is a strong indicator that ABC will cut bait on these two gems, and that's a shame. For a hot second, it felt like ABC cared more about quality and experimentation and cleverness than the bottom line, but really, who in Hollywood ACTUALLY feels that way? So we'll enjoy this while we can, and hope against all hope that the new chief is allowed to keep plugging holes in its schedule with these eight-week vacations. And PROMOTE THEM NEXT TIME. Don't just give up after the first week of overnights.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/02/agent-carter-recap-season-2-episode-9-1-1024x576.jpg)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-agent-carter-recap-season-2-episodes-8-and-9-02-2016/)
