## Downton Sadness

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4772.xml)

POOR ANNA. Here she is, walking to work alone, sad and isolated and small. (As always the direction in this episode is wonderful.) She is not dealing well at all -- and of course nor should she be, not the least because this episode opens literally the day after the last one ended, which hardly ever happens on this show. Joanne Froggatt continues to be completely heart-breaking. She's turned away from Bates -- who is kind of hurt but mostly REALLY CONCERNED -- and wants to move back into the main house because she (a) can't tell Bates that she was raped because she thinks Bates will murder The Evil Valet (and, tellingly, when she mentions this to Mrs Hughes, Mrs Hughes does NOT say "oh, I'm sure he won't murder anyone") and then get executed for it, and (b) she can't pretend everything is okay because she now feels like she's too "soiled" for Bates. OH ANNA YOU ARE NOT SOILED ALTHOUGH I KNOW THAT IS A NATURAL AND COMMON REACTION TO WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH BUT NONE OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT AND I COULD KILL THAT VALET MYSELF.

## Downton Breakfast

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4776.xml)

And to add insult to literal injury, that f'ing valet is still there, because Lord Gillingham hasn't left yet. Can I just say that this dude is sociopathically bold? If Anna had told any of the men in this household, he would have been tied to the back of the car and dragged by his hair to the train station and left on the tracks. (I know why she didn't tell them, and I understand why Mrs Hughes is keeping the secret \[although THAT won't last\], but I am quite sure everyone in Downton is going to be Team Anna.) All of this is not even to mention the fact that Evil Valet here facially reminds me of [the most awful and terrible of *The X-Files* villians, Donnie Pfaster.](https://x-files.wikia.com/wiki/Donald%5FPfaster?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) In short, I hate him and I wish I could bend the laws of reality, fiction, and time to push him down the well myself. Maybe Mrs. Hughes can subtly poison him next time she sees him.

## Downton ASSHOLE

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4777.xml)

And he is all, "WELL, THIS TRIP HAS GIVEN ME EVERYTHING I WANTED."

## Downton Revenge???

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4778.xml)

And Mrs. Hughes is clearly all, "IMMA KILL YOU SO HARD EVENTUALLY. SO DEAD." (NO SPOILERS)

## Downton Parental Approval

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4780.xml)

So, Lord G is cool with Michael Gregson now that Gregson saved Lord G's bacon with last week's Card Sharpery. WAIT UNTIL HE'S A NAZI. Although, actually, for the record, I don't think Gregson is going to turn into a Nazi. He really enjoyed screwing over said Card Sharp and I think it's more likely that he's going to get embroiled WITH the Nazis but turn into a spy for the British and then die tragically in service of his nation or some such. Regardless, it's going to be messy and Edith is going to be unhappy and the Nazis will definitely be THE WORST.

## Downton IOU

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4781.xml)

Even her headscarves won't be able to save her. AND if I were in charge, Card Sharp here -- who is advised by Michael Gregson to find another line of work that takes advantage of his specific cheating skillset -- would turn out, in about 20 years, to be The Person To See if you find yourself in need of being quickly and efficiently extracted from Nazi Germany. Like, this dude is going to end up being the guy who forges the paperwork you need to get out of Nazi-occupied France. Luckily, Gregson forgives his IOU (at Edith's request), and ergo, Card Sharp kinda owes him one. Owes him one, and also hates and resents him. So that is going to be deliciously awkward, or it would be if I were in charge of Downton Season, like, Ten. NO SPOILERS!

## Downton Duchess

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4782.xml)

I just wanted to give a shoutout to the Duchess here, who is like the only person in a 40-mile radius who remembers that Tom is bereaved, and gives him some kind words about how hard it was for her when the Duke died, but assures him that eventually, she was able to go on. And so shall he be.

## Downton British Chris Messina

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4788.xml)

THIS one is totally sprung on Lady Mary, and although he DOES have the good sense to note that he has a weird feeling about his terrible, terrible horrible no-good very bad valet, he is not really able to read the room in the sense of being able to figure out that Lady Mary and her lovely velvet gown is not ready to date again. Even though she tells him this about 65 times.

## Downton Senior Romance

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4790.xml)

I feel like I am going to be spending the rest of my life wishing for Dr Clarkson and Isobel Crawley to hook. It. Up. Instead, he just talks her into working for him at his brand new Downton Walk-In Clinic for Villagers Who Don't Feel Good.

## Downton Taxes

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4792.xml)

This scene basically establishes that Tom and Mary are going to be dragging Lord G kicking and screaming into the 20th century vis a vis how best to run the estate. He would rather chop up the estate rather than go into debt; Mary would rather go into debt temporarily if they come out of it self-sufficient at the end, and, no kidding, Lord G is on the wrong side of this argument. While Mary and Tom are in London -- staying with Aunt Rosamund, and (Cora fervently hopes) seeing Lord Gillingham again -- maybe you can spend the day LOOKING FOR YOUR LOST GUTENBERG BIBLE, LORD G.

## Downton YIKES

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4794.xml)

This is the moment at which I tweeted on Sunday, OH MY GOD EDNA YOU ARE CRAZY CRAY. Because Tom is all, "look, I don't remember that much about last night (BECAUSE EDNA MAYBE DRUGGED HIM) but I think we can both agree that if I DID have sex with you, that was a HUGE MISTAKE and we shall never never never speak of it again," and Edna is sort of like, "oh, sir, I canna believe you're being so cold to a poor miserable helpless woman like meeself!" and Tom's face slowly goes from, "holy shit this is awkward" to "OMG I AM IN TROUBLE." Alan Leech is really good in these scenes.

## Downton Spying

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4797.xml)

I feel like you should just assume Thomas is doing this during all scenes that happen in the Abbey, even if we don't see him doing it.

## Downton OH GOD THIS IS BAD

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4799.xml)

And so Edna follows Tom into his room and is all, "if you were good enough for Sybil, I'm good enough for you," and "I just want you to assure me that if there is to be a baby, you will marry me," and "if what you're worried about is it being a marriage of convenience, I want to assure you that no I am going to really make a go of being your actual wife," and Tom is all "THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM WORRIED ABOUT."

## Downton Golden Girls

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4802.xml)

I love that these two are friends now. Basically, The Dowager Countess is checking in on how Isobel is feeling, vis a vis the fact that Mary's got dudes all sniffing around her now, and Isobel is basically like, "Not wild about it, but I'm going to get over it," because Isobel -- although bossy and often sanctimonious -- is the best.

## Downton Sad Sad Sad Sad

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4803.xml)

EVERYONE is noticing that Something Is Wrong With Anna. Bates, Mary, both Lord AND Lady G, and Anna is basically like, "no no nothing to see here if I get pregnant I plan to kill myself just wondering if I'm going to have to die some time in the next five weeks everything's fine, bye." I just want to embrace her. I really, really REALLY think that Bates is going to put this all together and surprise Anna by NOT killing The Evil Valet, but by wrecking his revenge in some sort of I Learned This In Prison plot. I just hope it happens sooner than later.

## Downton Plotting

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4804.xml)

In which Edna is all, "I WOULD BE HONORED TO BE PART OF THIS FAMILY" -- she's present for a convo with Lord and Lady G about the current marital possibilities for Mary and Edith -- and instead of being like, "well, keep dreaming," Cora is like, "isn't she so sweet?!" For the record, I don't even think Tom slept with her. I think he passed out and she climbed into his bed and is using it for leverage. Not because I don't think he would, necessarily -- although I don't -- but because I think he was probably too drunk TO do it.

## Downton Matchmaking

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4823.xml)

So everyone goes up to London, and of course Rosamund has invited over Lord Gillingham and his puppy dog eyes, and Yahoo McDimples, who is hot for Rose, but already a little drunk (they'd been drinking at their gentleman's club). Rose and Mary both look, predictably, lovely in their gowns, and everyone decides to go out to The Lotus, which apparently has a new band.

## Downton DO IT

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4827.xml)

Meanwhile, Isobel HAS gone to work with Dr Clarkson and of course she loves it because she gets to be in charge AND meddle in the lives of the villagers AND fix people and these are all her favorite things and PLEASE JUST GET TOGETHER YOU TWO.

## Downton Downstairs

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4828.xml)

Oh, right. There ARE things happening Downstairs other than Anna's really upsetting plotline. Essentially: Daisy finagled it so that Alfred walked in on Jimmy and Ivy macking, and she feels bad about it not, not least because now Alfred has decided to go up to London and take a cooking test -- Alfred likes to cook, remember -- to see if he can get into the training program at the Ritz, [with Mr. Escoffier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auguste%5FEscoffier?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), who, by the way, also invented peach Melba and Melba toast, after Nellie Melba, who we just met last week. CALL BACKS. Anyway, Mrs Patmore is lovely about this to Daisy and is all get-a-grip-friend-y, telling her that it's probably for the best if Alfred leaves, because "sometimes, we can stay in a one-sided love too long." Ain't that the truth.

## Downton at The Club

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4834.xml)

Okay, so Lord Gillingham is really into Mary (who does look gorgeous) and she is basically, like, "look, this has been fun, you are great, I feel much better, but boy am I still sad about Matthew and I am NOT READY TO DATE and won't be for AGES and also you're almost engaged to someone else" and we learn later that Lord Gillingham has very bad listening comprehension.

## Downton Jammies

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4835.xml)

I basically stuck this in here because we need to talk about how gorgeous Cora's night clothes are, and how many interesting things she and Lord G discuss in front of the servants while they're getting ready for bed. Literally every single episode has this shot in it, as Cora natters on about whether Mary feels sufficiently alive yet or not.

## Downton Dancing

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4841.xml)

And over at the club, Yahoo McDimples is CRAZY drunk and dancing like a nut and then has to RUN off to barf in an urn somewhere and Rose is abandoned on the dance floor like a fool -- a fool, I tell you! (I don't really get why she didn't just go sit down) -- until Handsome American Bandleader Jack Ross here stops mid-song and dances with her, thus "rescuing" her. I don't REALLY get why this was such an act of social justice, although it WAS gallant, and he is very handsome, but let's just accept it. What I cannot accept is Jack Ross's singing because he is British and his American accent is weirdly nasal and cloying in song and I spent this entire scene trying to figure out if he was actually an American or not. ANYWAY, of course there's going to be some escandelo about Rose getting involved (eventually \[I assume\]) with a black (!) American (!!) bandleader (!!!!!), which is borne out by Rosamund's reactions throughout.

## Downton Confessions

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4847.xml)

When they get back from The Club, Mary calls Tom out for having been "in a glump" -- what a marvelous phrase -- Tom confesses to Mary that he's done something terrible and if he tells her, she'll "despise him." And it's a very, very good scene -- I do think this show has very much the right impulse in NOT pretending that Matthew never happened, which is what a soap opera often does, to its detriment -- because Mary tells him that she too was once in that position, but she DID tell, and it made everything better. She does not mention, "besides, how bad could it be? I had a man DIE IN MY BED," which is a shame because I think that bit of gossip might have cheered Tom up. Instead, she just tells him to talk to SOMEONE.

## Downton Scheming

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4849.xml)

In which Edna is TOTALLY SMUG and basically tells Thomas that he better stay on her good side because THINGS ARE ABOUT TO COME UP EDNA!!! and Thomas just makes a confused face.

## Downton Outerwear

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4851.xml)

Mary's coat here, upon her return from London, is GLORIOUS.

## Downton Tears and Sadness and Sadness and Tears

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4853.xml)

This is more of the same: Anna won't tell Bates what is wrong and Bates is gentle but firm when he tells her he WILL find out, and it's very upsetting and why can't they just be happy (I mean, I know why they can't be happy NOW but I mean, can't we turn back time?!) and then Carson comes by to tell Anna that Lord Gillingham is back and she is very skittish when asking about whether or not he's brought his valet (he has not) and PLEASE SOMEONE PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER AND INTRODUCE THE VALET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE DOWNTON WELL.

## Downton Say WHA

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4858.xml)

And so Mary is all, "seriously, dude, I JUST SAW YOU yesterday, what do you want?" and Lord Gillingham ASKS HER TO MARRY HIM. I literally said, aloud to my otherwise empty living room, "WHAT?" DUDE. She JUST TOLD YOU she wasn't ready to see someone new, LITERALLY LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO! MATTHEW HAS NOT BEEN DEAD A YEAR. That is also what Mary's face says to him.

Gillingham gives her a rather romantic speech, although it includes the awkwardly direct point, "he's dead and I'm alive," like, I guess that IS a selling point. She wisely points out that he doesn't even KNOW HER and he's nearly engaged to the Debutante of the Year, and he's all, "she fine, but I'm IN LOVE WITH YOU." And Mary is kind of like, "....." and he's all, "I WILL WAIT THREE YEARS AS LONG AS I CAN LOCK YOU DOWN NOW," like she's a favorable mortgage rate, and then Lord G comes bumbling in to look for his lost Gutenberg Bible and saves Mary from having to answer.

## Downton Take THAT, Crazy Lady!

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4863.xml)

So Tom confesses to Mrs. Hughes because she is the person everyone turns to when they have terrible sexual dramas in their lives, and she calls in Edna and she SERVES IT RIGHT TO EDNA, telling her that (a) she's not going to pay her off because (b) ain't no way she's pregnant because she's not dumb enough to get knocked up before she knew if Branson would marry her or not and (c) she'd also got a book hidden in her room called *How to Bang The Hot Object Of Your Psychosexual Obsession And Not Get Pregnant* (it's actually [*Married Love*, by Mary Stopes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Married%5FLove?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)), so she knows how to avoid such things and (d) she'd be happy to, like, tie Edna to a table so Dr Clarkson can give her an exam RIGHT THEN, and, also, (e) as far as Mrs Hughes is concerned, getting someone wasted and climbing into their bed is NOT very romantic and also finally, if she talks to Cora, HOLY GOD, she is (f) SO NOT EVER GETTING A GOOD REFERENCE MY GOD.

And then Edna is like, "FINE FINE YOU'RE RIGHT I HATE YOU ALL" and storms out and Tom is very impressed, especially when Mrs Hughes tells him she was totally bluffing and she would not actually have been able to find out anything pertinent by calling in Dr Clarkson anyway. And when Edna leaves she runs into Thomas and is like, "btw, I hate you," and Thomas essentially yells after her, "HATE YOU MORE!" So that was fun.

## Downton Classy

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4867.xml)

In which Isobel is VERY lovely to Lord Gillingham even though she knows Gillingham is trying to take Matthew's spot in Mary's heart, because Isobel is, as the Dowager Countess puts it, someone whose "virtue demands admiration." As much as she hates to say it.

## Downton Paperwork

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4869.xml)

Are you wondering, as Lord G was, where Edith's gotten to? Lord G thinks she's been VERY mysterious about her whereabouts; Mary very amusingly notes that Edith is about "as mysterious as a bucket. She's gone to see Michael Gregson." And indeed she has, where he has her sign some paperwork giving her power to do....things...while he's in Germany. (Things involving the paper? Things involving the care of his crazy wife in the attic? I don't know. I presume it's the former, but he's vague.)

## Downton Makeout

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4871.xml)

And then Edith shows us all her LOVELY arm cuff and surrenders -- I presume -- her virtue to Michael Gregson.

## Downton Oh Right This Again

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4873.xml)

Remember when we found out that Carson's One True Love picked The Other Charlie over him but totally regretted it? Mrs Hughes framed his photo of her, for his desk, and says a bunch of stuff about how this will humanize him and blah blah blah just make out already, you two well-organized glorious bitches.

## Downton Boys Talk

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4875.xml)

In which Bates tells Lord G that SHIT HAS GOTTEN REAL with Anna and he doesn't know why. And Lord G is really lovely about it, truly, reminding us why we all loved Lord G before he kissed that random housemaid and lost everyone's money because he thought a Ponzi scheme was a good idea. He tells Bates that everything is going to be fine. "The damage cannot be irreparable when a man and a woman love each other as much as you do...my goodness, that was strong talk for an Englishman."

## Downton WALK OF SHAME

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4877.xml)

Oh, *Edith*

## Downton Hideousness

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4883.xml)

So, Lord Gillingham tells Mary that if she won't marry him, he HAS to marry Mabel Debutante of the Year because of, you know, society and stuff, and it'll be okay, because she's nice and he can't humiliate her, and Mary OF COURSE turns him down just as she TOLD HIM SHE WOULD, because she is still in love with MATTHEW because he just died and also BECAUSE MATTHEW WAS AWESOME and this guy is, to be honest, just okay at best. And Gillingham is like, "I will never love again as I love you in this moment (*eyeroll*) and I must have something to remember" and so she kisses him and she seems to enjoy it. Good for you, Mary. Now, go have a fling with some hot unsuitable man who will not try to marry you after like 72 hours.

## Dowton NOPE

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4884.xml)

Mary essentially tells everyone that NO she is not going to marry Lord Gillingham DON'T BE RIDICULOUS and Tom and Lord G exchange, "well, we tried" faces.

## Downton Straight Talk

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4886.xml)

So, this scene was great. First of all, I enjoy that Edith is in red -- she's worn this before and in fact she often wears red around Michael Gregson, presumably because he awakens the fires of lust within her or whatever -- and second, this room is just spectacularly gorgeous. And then there's the actual meat of the scene, in which Rosamund (rightly) points out that although this is a new world in many ways, Edith is still really risking her reputation by staying out all night with a married man. And Edith is like, "how dare you! I trust him! He wants to MARRY ME," and Rosamund is all, "oh, like that guy who LEFT YOU AT THE ALTAR?!?" and Edith is like, "YOU ARE SO MEAN." But I have to say that Rosamund has a point: this whole thing is very risky of Edith, given the social mores of the day. I read something about this episode which called this "slut-shaming," and I think that's a bit ridiculous, because *Downton* isn't set in modern times. Counseling Edith that sleeping with a married man is not the best thing to do with her reputation -- which is all she has -- is a fair piece of advice at this point in history. Edith, of course, is defensive and actually says, "well! I'M NOT SORRY."

"No. you don't look sorry. But you may find yourself feeling very sorry later," Rosemund tells her, and I fear she is right.

## Downton Dressing

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4891.xml)

And, not for nothing, but Rosamund's dress is FABULOUS.

## Downton Regrets

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4893.xml)

Mary tells Branson he seems better, and he tells her that he took her advice and told someone his issues and now everything is fine. And she's like, "that's great. Because I just did something I think I shall live to regret." Oh Mary, come on. There are many, many dreamy men in the sea that is the Period Piece Soap Opera. You're going to be FINE.

[Fug the Show: Downton Abbey recap, season 4, episode 4There are a lot of people in the vicinity of Downton who are making very, very bad life decisions; an almost equal number of people who have had tragedy thrust upon them; and lots and lots and lots of meddling, although the takeaway continues to be that meddling in the affairs of others is the right decision, like, 95% of the time. All that, plus some amazing outfits and some really, really, REALLY good furniture. A NOTE ABOUT SPOILERS: I know you lovely people who live in the UK (and you lovely people who have been watching by less than legal means) have already seen this season. I trust that you will continue to be lovely and considerate and you will not spoil those of us here in the US as to what we have in front of us. Please keep the comments spoiler-free. We all sincerely, sincerely, really appreciate it. Thank you! (It goes without saying, I hope, that if you have NOT caught up through season three, then this will have spoilers for seasons one through three.) And now…to the fall-out of the TERRIBLE THING, a variety of misguided marital suggestions, and some very drunken dimpled yahoos.![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_4772.xml)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-downton-abbey-season-4-episode-3-01-2014/)
