Flash forward: Wes runs out of the Hapstall house and collides with all the Pretty Little Liars -- except Connor, who is inside huddled over Annalise's body, trying to plug the wounds ("It's your fault. It's always your fault," he is muttering). He doesn't want to leave her but they all talk him into running, because LOOK HOW WELL THAT ALWAYS WORKS OUT FOR YOU. Wait, I guess it did work out the first time. Good lesson! Everyone always run instead of dealing with the police, the law, and morality.

Caleb and Catherine have been arrested in conjunction with their aunt's murder now, which is unfortunate because Caleb had gone out on a run. This actor is... not the strongest, and when his DNA is found in the car, it looks bad. Bonnie tricks him by telling him that there is also footage of him a block away, and he insists he just ran his regular route nowhere near that location and he's certain he's being framed. Bonnie is convinced. I have questions. Namely, is that the male version of a wine cardigan?

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why.

Bonnie gets a heap of scorn from Annalise about how she's terrible and meek and not that useful. "Screw up again and you're going to be the next dead body in this house," she says, almost glibly, which... I cannot believe they had her go there, frankly. Way to be blithe about all the MURDERING that your asshole employees are doing, Annalise. The show certainly comes off like we're meant to think Annalise is being cruel and spiteful to poor Bonnie -- presenting Annalise as The Cold Fish and Bonnie as her trembling underling -- and like, y'all, BONNIE MURDERED A PERSON. Annalise is treating her like a toddler who peed in the corner, not a person who ENDED ANOTHER PERSON.

Asher, though, shows up to make Bonnie feel better by giving her a little sweet talk about how he likes it when she's the boss lady. Bonnie shoots him such a grateful expression that it almost makes me feel sorry for her, except for how she taped a plastic bag over a girl's face until she stopped breathing.

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why.

The Pretty Little Lawyers are arguing about whether they should sneak over to Nate's hearing. Asher catches them, and Connor covers by telling everyone that Oliver has HIV, and Laurel was just scolding him on not having sex with Oliver yet. Everyone tries not to act surprised by this information, although Laurel gives Connor a disgusted look and walks away with an eye roll, which is a REALLY weird reaction to play in this moment. It made me uncomfortable. Asher, bless him, actually seems extremely concerned for Connor in his slightly out-of-tune way. Because Asher is the only decent human being in this show.

Famke and Annalise meet in her car, covertly, except right outside the courthouse. Talk quickly moves to About That Time We Nailed, and how fun it was, and this might actually be the only time I've seen Annalise smile with something approaching sincerity.

And Famke shoots her this super sexy look that suggests she would like to repeat that midnight snack. The two of them hold hands over the gearshift, which is a surprisingly phallic image choice given that we're talking about two women having sex.

Annalise is more sour when she realizes the prosecutor is using Nate's hearing to fire bullets at Annalise instead. She wants to have Famke removed for having "a relationship" with Annalise, which Famke successfully deflects, but Annalise sits there looking cloaked in dread and sorrow in a way that surprises me given that she is a successful attorney who is covering up all kinds of wrongdoing. Where is her poker face? Hell, I'm all in, Annalise, if THAT'S how you play.
Also, I am compelled to note that Famke Janssen, Noted Death Row Attorney, has caught the bug in which she just stands up and talks rather than saying "objection." There's a part where she says, even, "That's not why I'm objecting," but SHE NEVER SAID THE WORD "OBJECTION" IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Frank corners Bonnie and essentially gets her to admit that she killed Rebecca. He's SO CASUAL about it, and she's like, "Please don't. I can't stand anyone else beating me up." BONNIE. YOU KILLED SOMEONE, YOU ASSCANOE. STOP ACTING LIKE YOU ARE BEING PUNISHED FOR LEAVING THE FRIDGE DOOR AJAR ALL NIGHT.
Although at least with Frank, his chill attitude makes an odd sort of sense -- in fact, as he quizzes Bonnie about why she didn't confide in him, she asks if HE would do it in her shoes, and he flashes back to murdering Lila and then agrees he would have kept silent. All you people are so dysfunctional. I can't.

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why.

These fools are in the courtroom. In secret. They're like, "She can't see us back here." THERE ARE THREE ROWS OF SEATS IN THIS THING. OF COURSE SHE CAN SEE YOU. And when Annalise gets called up to the stand to be grilled about her affair with Nate, and when it started, and whether they nailed in a bathroom stall the night his wife was diagnosed with a fatal disease, Connor grunts, "Let the slut-shaming begin." The thing is, though, it is actually RELEVANT when the affair began and how passionate it was, given that the contention is that Nate killed Annalise's husband. But I mean, YOU try resisting Nate when he's sad and drunk and wants you rock your world.

Annalise heads up to the stand looking completely freaking foxy. Basically, what happens is that the judge lets the prosecutor get away with asking argumentative questions until Annalise starts hissing that the prosecutor is "undeserving" and "pathetic" and basically showers her in firm derision. The lawyer then connects the dots between making her cranky and "seems like you're MORE than capable of murder." So basically, because Annalise is irritated, a smug white lady prosecutor gets to be like, "OH HEY THERE MURDEROUS RAGE! OBVIOUSLY YOU COULD KILL!" I don't care for the cut of THAT jib.

Let's just pause here for a Nate Appreciation Break. Mmm. Yes.

On the way out of the courtroom, a dude comes up with a lame line about his phone, and Connor thinks the guy is hitting on him. Michaela restrains him from going along with it -- so, are we not meant to think Connor is committed, then? -- and the dude is fine with that because it was all a ploy to get HER number. At this point I was like, "Oh, hello, Eggs 911, YOU ARE LATE WITH MY POACHED ON TOAST."

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why.

Wes is sent in to work on Catherine Hapstall, to get her to admit to Annalise that her brother was not with her the night of the aunt's recent murder. I only bring it up because she sees through it, and yet Wes never wavers and even acts a little flirty with her later. There are a lot of theories that he is Annalise's son, secretly, and if that's the case then certainly nobody told Viola Davis because she acts some of her scenes like she wants to ride him all the way home. But it WOULD make sense if it turns out he's taking a liking to sweet-talking clients and maybe even playing on any mutual attraction to get what he needs.

Oliver pops by to see Connor, and Asher -- of course -- immediately stands up and all but salutes him as an American hero, telling Oliver that he's super brave and that Asher is awed by his courage, and of course, "Philadelphia is one of my favorite movies." Everyone is like YOU IDIOT SHUT UP STOP IT, but the thing is... I'm going to defend Asher here, because although that was inappropriate and off the mark, it came from a really kind place. And NOBODY ELSE ON THIS SHOW has a kind place except for Oliver.

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why (even if you already know because we just covered it).

These two JUST got attacked for being friends, and what do they do? DISCUSS IN THE COURTHOUSE PUBLIC BATHROOM THAT NATE REFUSES TO LIE ON THE STAND FOR ANNALISE. The prosecutor walks in and nips this in the bud, but COME ON EVERYONE.
What does happen: Famke goes out there, in an attempt to cobble together another strategy, and basically lays out exactly what did happen. She challenges Annalise. She says she thinks Annalise planted the fingerprint to frame Nate and cover up Sam's real killer. And when Annalise says nothing at all, only glowers, Famke is like, "WHY AREN'T YOU SAYING ANYTHING." I have to assume this was part of the plan: to make Nate's guilt seem totally in doubt, so that he would get off, but without any evidence pinning it to Annalise. It works. Nate walks. But I'd love to know, given that it actually becomes a plot point how much TIME they are spending grilling Annalise and fighting with her instead of presenting a case against Nate, whether this is unusual procedure. Attorneys of Fug Nation: ACTIVATE. The judges on this show always come across as extremely lacking in control of their own courtrooms, or even of law.

Bonnie and Annalise have a pretty heavy scene here. Annalise has been heaping scorn on her all episode. Bonnie delivers the news that they got proof that the cops ran two DNA tests on the Haptall aunt's car, proving the DNA magically appeared after the first one was negative. Annalise is annoyed that she brings her "only problems, never solutions," and says, "Is it always going to be like this? You play the little girl lost while I clean up your mess?" Bonnie insists this is how Annalise likes it and how Annalise forces it to be: "You say you want me to be like you, but you don't. You want me to be like THIS so that I don't forget what I owe you."
Bonnie then reminds her that she killed Rebecca for Annalise, "for you, to take care of you the way you took care of me." Annalise husks that she didn't take care of Bonnie. She RUINED Bonnie. "You needed to be SAVED from me. That's what you all need."
So, in sum: We have allusions to their past, and a whole heaping load of self-pity from Annalise. Both actors really bring it, though.

The evidence about the DNA tests was obtained by Oliver hacking the police database. Annalise then turns around and presents it in court. Does she not have to reveal HOW she got this information? How is she allowed to just toss everything and everything she finds right at the judge? Doesn't HOW you get evidence matter, as it can be ruled inadmissible? And don't we know by now that she can't just arrive with new stuff she hasn't disclosed to the prosecution yet? FUG NATION I NEED YOU.

Oliver is furious with Connor for blabbing his personal secret to everyone when he hasn't even told his PARENTS yet. He makes an allusion to how he hasn't even told Connor how he got it because, unlike Connor, he keeps his mouth shut when someone's feelings are on the line. Oh, Oliver, you master manipulator, you. So Connor immediately says Oliver should tell him, in a tit-for-tat scenario. Oliver confesses that he was so upset when Connor cheated on him that he went out and had unprotected casual sex. Connor turns this into a POOR PITIFUL ME scenario, sniffling that it's ALL HIS FAULT, O WOE, and storming out of the room. This leaves Oliver calling after him, somehow now in the position of having to apologize to Connor even though Connor is the one who a) blabbed private stuff to his friends, b) asked Oliver to tell him, and c) treated Oliver poorly the first time around. Stop making it about you, Connor.

Famke finds Annalise in her kitchen, and the two of them argue briefly about the courtroom attack and how Famke made it personal. "I don't hate you. But I hate how you make me feel, because I can't have you," Famke admits. Annalise tells her that she's the most beautiful thing that ever happened, and the two of them have a totally steamy romp in the upstairs bedroom. I kept waiting for someone to walk in on them, given that the only bathroom in the entire house is there and it's always open, but for once that doesn't happen.

Laurel is horny, so she shows up to Frank's to try and bait him into sex. Frank gets her good and turned on, then sniffs that it sucks to be treated like a gigolo and that if she'd like to have a piece of his ass then she needs to get to know him as a person. Then he slams the door in his face. This is rich considering he strangled a pregnant girl. I just... I am still not going to get over that. You do not get to climb on your high horse about being used as man meat when you climbed up on a water tower and threw in the corpse of the girl whose life you just ended.

Wes finds all Rebecca's stuff cleared out of her apartment, and there's a photo of her with a man...

... and of course that man, yes, is the one who hit on Michaela earlier (who Connor and Oliver convinced her to call). So she might be about to crack Eggs 911, or get scrambled by him. ZING.

And then Asher makes this face. It doesn't matter why.

Famke heads back to New York, hopefully asking Annalise to consider joining her there someday. Annalise says she'll think about it, then tenderly kisses her goodbye. On her front stoop. After they both denied in court that the two of them were anything other than law school acquaintances. A front stoop that the media ought to be watching considering SHE IS SUSPECTED OF KILLING HER HUSBAND. DISCRETION IS MAYBE THE ONE-TENTH OF THE LAW THAT ISN'T COVERED BY POSSESSION.

Flash forward: Guess who's presumed dead outside the Hapstall house? The prosecutor. Asher told her off after Nate's case was dismissed, saying his side won and he wouldn't have to spy for her anymore, to which she sunnily responded that she'd been appointed to the Hapstall case. And now here she is, bleeding from the face and unconscious. Women have the WORST luck on this show. Last year Lila and Tom Verica balanced the scales until Rebecca died, and then this year we've had this woman and the aunt and some bleeding from Annalise's gut and then the dead parents. Those XX chromosomes are having a rough season.
