## Outfit #1

I'm guessing this shot -- the first of the hour -- is from a later episode, somehow, probably right before someone throws coffee all over her dreams. In fact, I keep waiting for a bus with the show's name on it to drive by through a puddle and splash her into tragedy.

## Outfit #2

Five minutes in and I was sort of confused: One minute, Jane calls herself an invisible dateless nothing, and another she's reluctant to go to school because she's embarrassed about... something. I don't know what. And it's not the first day of school because she has a midterm later in the hour. So... I don't know. If they said it, I had tuned out, which is also a bad sign. Anyway, everyone points and laughs at Jane as she arrives -- again, not so much invisible, then -- and the resident evil popular girl mocks her jacket as a Goodwill find. STILL not invisible. Also, I'm so sure. Those jackets were crazy trendy not that long ago and mega expensive.

## Popular Girl

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8444-800x533.jpg)

The girl in question, here shown, was herself wearing a lacy corset top under a blazer, with a tiny skirt. Maybe she and her corset should discuss with Jane's jacket which one is the more stale happening.

## Outfit #3

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8447-800x533.jpg)

We don't even get to see this full costume, just the dress and the leather jacket. All new pieces. Probably perfectly cute, probably not cheap, probably things she will end up having to hide from her creditors when they come looking for things to repossess.

## Outfit #4

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8451-800x533.jpg)

On her way to the interview, Jane is kitted out in a trendy little blouse, flouncy skirt, high heels, and a pink belt. They are seriously doing a terrible job selling that this girl is of limited means, and we haven't even gotten through act one yet.

## Still Outfit #4

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8458-800x533.jpg)

And the blouse? Covered in little lips. It's sort of cute -- she looks like a Benefit Cosmetics ad. This is supposedly a bubble she's blowing, but maybe it's not -- maybe she pays for her lavishly outfitted lifestyle by offering her body as a transport vessel for alien ships that she then expels after pounding a carbonated beverage, and leaves them to do their nefarious work without question. That would be an intriguing midseason cliffhanger.

## Outfit #4 again

There is a moment here where they try to salvage reason by having Andie MacDowell compliment Jane on her belt, which Jane then says eagerly that she made herself. With, what, her Easy Bake Leather Studded Belt Oven? Nice try. (Also, the Pretty In Pink similarities make it even more amusing that an actress named Andie stars in this show.)

## Andie

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8461-800x533.jpg)

By the way, here is Andie. She only pops up here in terse video conference scenes in which she makes various stern faces and narrows her eyes a lot. I'm hopeful that her wardrobe will get more interesting, although I did appreciate the scene in which she was wearing a bathrobe and a half-naked dude in a towel strolled around behind her. Now THAT was a prudently chosen wardrobe.

## Outfit #5

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8471-800x533.jpg)

Technically this is actually ouffit #6, but we didn't really see #5 -- she was wearing something else at school and then put this on in her car. So, TWICE as many clothes in her closet -- some for work, some for play. Her deadbeat brother is going to be super depressed about that. This outfit is worth a lot of top ramen.

## Outfit #6

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8476-800x533.jpg)

Cute skirt. Really cute. This show is all about quirky separates. And I might actually be persuaded that she stole the shirt from her brother, or bought it at Target for like $6\. One point to the show.

## Outfit #7

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8480-800x533.jpg)

Next up: A gold lame skirt, a flowery shirt, a cardigan, and a belt. Again: cute. The show is good with accessories. It's also very apt for a 16-year old. I hope we see the episode where she MacGyvered it out of wrapping paper and thumbtacks.

## Outfit #8

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8481-800x533.jpg)

And so now we're into a clothing montage: Jane gets sent to Andie's house and rummages around in the closet and decides to try on everything in there, which of course fits her perfectly and is all incredibly expensive couture. Very *Working Girl*, Jane. And not in a good way. Actually, the outfit is more Celine Dion Puts On The Backward Suit. Except, you know, it's Frontward.

## Outfit #9

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8483-800x533.jpg)

You know what, forget seeing this girl ever actually put an outfit together, or shop for it -- I want to know when she has time to go to the gym. Sigh.

## Outfit #10

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8484-800x533.jpg)

Dude, Andie MacDowell -- in life or in fiction -- would never be caught dead in this. She looks like she's playing the heart in a ballet about the circulatory system.

## Outfit #11

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8487-800x533.jpg)

I think this gown is cross-dressing as a tube top.

## Outfit #12

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8488-800x533.jpg)

I hope she left a note for Andie saying, "Dear Boss I've Never Met In Person: So glad we are close enough that I can go commando in your clothes but not have to pay to them get dry-cleaned. Love, your assistant. P.S. When did you skate a Catwoman-themed long program? Wicked!"

## Outfit #13

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8485-800x533.jpg)

Girl, don't twirl. We've already established that you're not wearing underwear.

## Outfit #14

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8490-800x533.jpg)

Andie MacDowell would never wear this, either. Why is that in her closet? Is she one of Cruella de Vil's bridesmaids?

## Outfit #15

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/01/IMG_8495-800x533.jpg)

This fifteenth look would be the last: Jane put this on, then had to run off and take her midterm -- for which she stole Andie's car, so she could then get right over to the offices and stave off a hostile takeover. Not only did nobody bat an eyelash at her wearing a fancy-pants designer cocktail dress, but -- BUT -- she then VIDEO-CHATTED with Andie, who earlier suspected Jane of wearing her lipstick and yet somehow failed to notice that Jane is wearing her CLOTHES. WTF. This is where you throw on a coat, Jane. She is lucky Andie is not observant. Skype DOES get kind of pixelated sometimes.

And so went the pilot: Plenty of cute stuff, interestingly (if a tad on the twee side) paired, and yet totally at odds with the central conceit that the character is doing all this because she's having major money struggles (well, and also because it makes her feel not-invisible and blah blah blah dream job, but you feel me). If they focus more on her having a hard time making repeat clothes feel new, and/or trying to stretch her dollars to keep up with the fashionistas at work, then I might be able to root for her. As it is, I just want her to quit her whining and see if cutting up her credit cards might help. Don't pay Bluefly if you can't pay the bank.

[Fug the Show: Jane By DesignFar be it from us to resist scrutinizing the wardrobe on a show set in the fashion world, right? It's like Gossip Girl plus Pretty In Pink (right down to her best friend having a bouffant while she crushes on the rich popular boy, whose name sadly is not Blane, and who does not have a BFF who is James Spader clone mincing around in white linen leisure suits, although this IS only the pilot so I have hope). And yes, there is a fashion montage. The premise: Jane's father is dead and mother is MIA, Jane's brother can't support them, Jane tries for an internship at a fashion house and a misunderstanding leads to her getting offered a job as the designer's personal assistant, Jane forges paperwork to accept the job so she can pay the mortgage, Jane ends up in a new outfit every segment even though she's supposedly totally broke. It's kind of hard to root for her family's struggles when she's not even having a hard time keeping up with the fashionistas and is never once shown going thrifting or pulling clothes out of a Dumpster. THAT girl I might raise a glass to, because that takes ladyballs. This girl just kind of makes me want to check her bank statements.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/01/img_8433-800x533.jpg)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-jane-by-design-01-2012/)
