## Tami and spawn

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/10/nashimg_0449.png)

Tami is TICKED, y'all. She is cheesed like a Packer fan on a Sunday. Why?

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0451_2.png)

Because Hayden Panettiere has stopped traffic to shoot a music video smack in the middle of Nashville. Everybody was too tired to name the director anything extravagant, so he's just Joe Smith. And when he gets fired -- AND HE WILL, because Hayden overheard him dissing her terrible song -- they can replace him with John Doe, and then Bob Jones. The thing is, though, Hayden knows nobody takes her shallow songs seriously, and it rankles her. So by day she plays the role, wriggling around looking like a cheerleader for an Arena Football Team that is about to go broke, and by night she pines for Deacon to give her credibility and also some of his country strong.

## Tami and Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0455.png)

Tami is still fuming that her husband is running for mayor and didn't let her in on the decision until after it was done. He, meanwhile, doesn't like her team's new idea of sending her out on an acoustic tour with Deacon, just like the old days. Because the old days were naked days. They go to bed angry, and I really, really love that Tami is sleeping in an old t-shirt. Seriously. Most shows overthink pajamas. Better to be a decent show with regular-person PJs than a crackfest wherein one of your leads wears a sequined vest to bed. (Seriously, Serena Van Der Woodsen, did that not scrape you up?)

## Tami and Deacon

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0458.png)

Of course, the show really trying to punch you in the face with the fact that it's Country, so everyone is resoundingly regular almost all the time and/or wearing some kind of folksy pattern or plaid. Here, Tami and Deacon are about to start rehearsing...

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0459.png)

And Hayden Taylor Underwood is glaring at them in what looks like a really terrible wig and a Lady Lumberjack shirt, because she wants to chuck his wood.

## Scarlett and Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0470.png)

These two, meanwhile, are getting offered a deal by Watty White, a.k.a. Tami's mentor and the man who in this universe discovered half of Nashville. He wants to produce their demo. Gunnar is thrilled, because he hasn't seen TV before, so he doesn't know that the chintz-wearing dope dating the alpha rocker is going to stand by her man instead.

## Lucky Spencer

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0460.png)

I'm sorry, but Jonathan Jackson has been Lucky Spencer to me since he was ten. It's too hard. Lucky here starts complaining about how impossible it is for righteous hard-working musicians to get noticed in this town, and you can tell he's been failing hard because every strand of hair is coated in the sweat of the damned.

## Scarlett and Lucky

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0463.png)

So Scarlett immediately tells him about her offer and he's like, "HOORAY, I SUPPORT YOU AS YOU WOULD ME," and it's all fine. EXCEPT: no. She tells him NOTHING, and instead soothes him by exfoliating his tongue with her own.

## Hayden and Deacon

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0467.png)

Meanwhile, Hayden and Deacon are out by yonder riverbank shooting an ad for Country Time Lemonade.

## Hayden and Deacon

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0475.png)

By which I mean, they write a song together with the help of Tammy Wynette's $50,000 vintage guitar, and then go skinny dipping. Hayden is actually fine, but boy, do they give her some hacky lines -- like, "Don't you have a li'l adventure in your soul?" Half the characters on this show speak only in Greeting Card.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0471.png)

Tami pops by a party for her husband's candidacy, just long enough to get her hackles raised by some ladies who gush to her about how great Hayden is, and gee, when is Tami's new album coming out again? Tami is understandably irritated that none of these women thinks to Google these things before arriving at the party, because if you're going to a fundraiser at a famous person's house, you TOTALLY read up on that person in case you manage to get stuck next to them while waiting for your cocktail. I'm not a big fan of Tami's juvenile side ponytail, though the extra standing on the left appears to disagree and even be willing to floss his teeth with that sucker in exchange for two hours of alone time.

## Powers Boothe

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0473.png)

Powers Boothe stops by for a hiss-a-thon, wherein he manages to aggravate Tami via emotional blackmail and gutteral barbs. She is like, "Gosh, there must be SOMEONE at this party I'd enjoy talking to," and leaves. Which is great, except that never let Powers Boothe see you sweat, Tami. He will take that sweat and use it to salt his margarita.

## Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0477.png)

Now we get some of Teddy's backstory: As he's being vetted by Powers's people, he gets twitchy when they ask about his last job. Apparently he had a company called Cumberland, and he also sat on the board of the firm that financed it -- but left that seat just days before the Cumberland venture fell apart, and whenever anyone asks about it, he starts to sweat and twitch and his eyes roll back in his head and he speaks in tongues. Which is to say, his discomfort is gently palpable. I don't support law-breaking, but you're going to do it, at least have the stomach to hide it. Smooth liars have a way better chance than, say, the inept schemers who kill people in Cabot Cove and then confess to the grandmother-type down the road just because she asked you if you happened to kill anyone recently.

## Avery and Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0480.png)

After Scarlett writhes around at one of Lucky's truly awful concerts, he gets hit on by an audience member who is depressed to learn he has a girlfriend, and recognizes Gunnar and Scarlett from their Bluebird performance. The truth spills out, and Lucky can barely pretend to be happy, and Scarlett is clearly pathetic enough to decide that she can't succeed in life because it will make him insecure about the power of his genitals. He's such a jerk, he doesn't even TELL her about what the back of her head is doing.

## Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0481.png)

Nor does he warn her about the front. Taylor Momsen would look at this and be like, "Bangin' extensions, girl. Hang onto them like grim death." The rest of us would say, "Those extensions ARE grim death."

## Powers

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0484.png)

Despite this being a show set in 2012, Powers Boothe's office has zero computer equipment in it. He's not THAT old, you guys. You know he'd have several computers, one for typing up revenge ideas, one for Googling his enemies, and one for online shopping and ordering expensive mustards.

## Powers Boothe

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0482.png)

Tami has mended fences with the other mayoral candidate, who I will henceforth call Coleman, in an effort to call SOMEBODY by their actual name. Coleman apparently practically grew up with Tami and her family, and thus is angry at Powers Boothe for inventing an opponent for him. So he goes to Powers Boothe's office and gets threatened and growled at, and leaves with chunks of scenery swinging from his ears that Powers chewed up and then spat back in his face.

## The Skirt

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0489_2.png)

Okay. So. I KNOW Tami is normal. She's a breath of unfussy air. We get it. But I DO NOT believe she would wear this. I don't care how cash-poor she thinks she is. That woman has a huge closet full of way more remarkable casual separates than that. There is no way the reigning queen of country music shambled into an Old Navy, picked a stiff khaki mini off the rack, dragged into to the dressing room with her, and thought, "Oh, YES, this is totally the wardrobe staple I have been missing. EVERYTHING'S COMING UP MEEEEEE."

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0492.png)

Plot-wise, Tami and Deacon are discussing the tour when Hayden's courier delivers the Wynette guitar. Tami realizes they're "song-writing" together and gets horribly jealous, and they fight, and when he essentially suggests she's not there for him, she REALLY bristles and almost cries and stomps out of there. And it's hard to do anything but focus on the skirt of doom. She could've poked her legs through a cardboard box and it would've looked better. In related news, if anyone's short on Halloween ideas this year, you're welcome.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0496.png)

Well, now, Hayden is just screamin' mad that Deacon hasn't called to thank her for the gee-tar. And when her manager shows her the tacky music video they did, she freaks out and hissies that NOBODY will take her SERIOUSLY without DEACON and if her manager doesn't want to hear it then he can just talk to the hand -- as long as he's cool with chatting during whatever the hand is doing at the time, because in about ten minutes it might be in Deacon's pants.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0499.png)

Then Hayden goes and records the song she wrote with Deacon in her home studio, and makes it sound way lamer than when he was just playing it acoustically on Tammy's six-string. But they needed her to sing some allegorical lyrics while staring pensively at the Heavens, and this is way more convenient for that.

## Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0503.png)

Meanwhile, Gunnar and his band are playing honky-tonk at a sparsely populated motel bar, clad in shirts that appear to have been purchased at an Etsy store called Cowboy Funkies.

## Scarlett and Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0505.png)

Now it is Scarlett's turn to gaze as Gunnar gives her a homespun but effective speech about how turning down the chance to make the demo with a legend is REALLY, REALLY STUPID, especially when you're doing it because of your boyfriend's ego, and how if he can't handle having a fulfilled and talented and happy lady then he ought to go piss up a tree. Making her this big of a doormat and a dope is a very bad idea; fortunately, Gunnar's speech works, but this just means we're going to see a lot more mopey cheekbones and Depressed Gingham from her in the coming weeks as Lucky reacts badly. Sigh.

## The Skirt

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0506.png)

Meanwhile, it was Tami's turn to get vetted, and she failed because they found her skirt abdominally venomous. During her brief questioning, she exposits that she and Deacon were lovers until she finally got him into rehab, and that -- essentially -- she met and married Teddy while he was inside because he seemed like a lost, tortured cause. Except she guessed wrong, but she stomps off in an emotional funk before she can say that out loud. She complains to Teddy that she has kept her private life private for twenty years, and he basically can't say anything interesting back to her because his whole mayoral candidacy is patently absurd.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0507.png)

Hayden shows up in a totally different car -- this is the third vehicle she's used in two episodes to cruise up to Deacon, pant in his face, and then shimmy away. Today, dressed as a drag-racer's girlfriend, she hands Deacon her recording of their song, begs him AGAIN to sing on her tour and in her band and in her shower, and then wiggles her butt back to her car while cooing, "Somethin' abou' choooo just maykes me wanna grow uuuuup." She's like Country Hagrid. They're directing her to purr nine out of every ten lines, and it's insane.

## Powers

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0510.png)

Powers thinks Teddy is hiding something. Powers wants his committee to dig it up. Powers knows a guilty mayor is a controllable one. Powers wants to snack on some more props.

## Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0511_2.png)

So, of course, cut to Teddy burning a bunch of incriminating-looking files while chugging scotch. Poor, dumb Teddy. Mongo only pawn in game of life. (RIP, Alex Karras.)

## Tami

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nashimg_0515.xml)

Tami puts on the kind of cheerful florals everyone is clearly expected to wear down at the Bluebird, and watches Deacon play for the first time in forever. She seems thrilled, and nobody is paying the least bit of attention to the fact that she's there, which... hey, maybe Nashville is cool like that. It feels like every third celeb starts talking about wanting to move there, and it sure isn't because the humidity is so pleasant.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0516.png)

Count Hayden among the people who didn't know Tami was in this tiny, tiny bar. Because she -- who clearly wants to be seen, as she ditched her fedora this time -- starts flushing and blushing and preparing to stand up when Deacon announces he's going to duet with somebody TOTALLY AWESOME. Clearly SHE has never seen any movies or TV EITHER, or else she'd smell this fake-out.

## Tami and Deacon

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0520_2.png)

And so Tami and Deacon sing a love song together that's good, but nowhere close to last week's Gunnar and Scarlett moment ("If I Didn't Know Better," a Civil Wars cover). But it is impressive for the fact that there is a tiny moment in which the performance -- whose refrain is "No one will ever love you like I do," or somesuch -- shifts from becoming a declaration of lust and an admission of history, to being silent apology from Tami to Deacon and back. You can see it in her face for a bare flash, and you see him meet it, and then they both accept it, and it was so subtle and lovely and effective.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0523.png)

HULK SMASH.

## Tami and Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0525.png)

And the comedown after their musical sex is crushing.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/10/nashIMG_0526.png)

So, Tami goes home to her milquetoast crook of a husband and hugs him, because he's the one she picked all those years ago, and people on TV really like to be dramatically trapped by their wrong choices. At least she's dramatically trapped in that KITCHEN. Good luck competing with all that exposed brick and storage space, Deacon. You might be good sex, but that? That is real-estate porn.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, season 1, episode 2Apologies to those of you who really hate that I still call her Tami Taylor. I'm not trying to freeze out the people who didn't watch Friday Night Lights; it's just a tic, like how Luke Perry will always be Dylan McKay, and Heather Locklear will always be Amanda Woodward. I really can't help it. I look at Connie Britton and I see Tami, y'all. It's intended as a compliment. Unlike the khaki skirt she wears in this episode, which I think had purely sinister motivations.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/10/nashimg_0449.png)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-episode-2-10-2012/)
