## Bratville

During a family trip to Rayna's mother's grave, Maddie stands off to the side and pouts so hard that her jeans spontaneously burst. She's listening to one of Deacon's albums, which freaks out Rayna -- who then sits down, alone, and tells her mother that she misses her because it's so HARD and her voice is gone and she doesn't know how to talk to Maddie about any of this. Here's a thought: Start by actually attempting to talk to Maddie about any of this. Like, with information. And words that, strung together, relate to facts about her past with Deacon. Rayna is learning the very important lesson that it's very hard to communicate things to someone when you are actively not communicating things to them.

## Deadville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6909-1024x768.xml)

I know quotes on a gravestone are customary, but it cracks me up because they come off like air quotes of irony. "Beloved" "wife" "and" "mother." When I go, in addition to cribbing from Ben Jonson's tombstone in Westminster Abbey (it reads simply O RARE BEN JONSON), I'm going to make them fill it with insincere-sounding quoted words. Because there's nothing wiser than making a joke out of your final resting place.

## Crassville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6913-1024x768.jpg)

Juliette has received a car as a thank you from Charlie, the bajillionare whom she sexed up last week after performing at his anniversary party, while his wife was drinking a daiquiri. Juliette is not impressed, possibly because she thinks a soft-top car is not the most resounding euphemism for her bedroom skills. She does drive it though, and then thinks better of it at the end of the hour and tells Glenn to return it with a note that says Juliette Barnes buys her own cars. I wish she'd said, "Thanks, but my vagina runs on diesel."

## Fallopianville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6916-1024x768.jpg)

Man, home ovulation kits are so terse. Couldn't they make a window that says, "Hmm, not yet. I know this is annoying and frustrating and you are really sick of peeing on a stick at the same time every day, but keep at it, and eventually you WILL pop out an egg."

## Casualville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6917-1024x768.jpg)

"Oh heyyyyy Teddy, no big, just barfing from the baby I'm TOTALLY STILL GESTATING I PROMISE." I guess she thinks if she gets pregnant now she can fix the lie with a real baby? Even though said real baby will be at least three weeks less far along than the miscarried and now fake one? This is not going to end well. Teddy proposes to her with his mother's ring -- then immediately tells her not to say anything to anyone. Peggy wonders if he wants her, or if he's trying to avoid a scandal. He admits to both, but it's more like, "I don't want a scandal, and also, you are here, which means I don't have to fill out an OK Cupid profile."

## Poofville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6923-1024x768.jpg)

Scarlett is at a photo shoot for promotional materials, and album covers I guess, and the stylists decide that this in credibly dated hairdo is the right choice for her. The front is very Posh French Aristocrat Whom The Scarlet Pimpernel Will Try To Save From Getting The Chop.

## Coyville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6926-1024x768.xml)

Layla of course has no problem being flirty and cute and young, maybe because her target demographic is super easy to hit in that way. What do tweens like? Things that are flirty, and cute, and young. And Sunny Delight, if TV commercials are not lying to me. ARE THEY LYING TO ME?

## Drabville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6927-1024x768.xml)

This is all Scarlett can muster, because she's a non-functioning human being who cannot adapt to any situation. Seriously, she just stands there twitching and freaking out about being stylied, and glaring at everyone. Why is Rayna not there to help art direct this? What's HER target demographic, anyway? Is Scarlett capable of joy?

## WTFville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6931-1024x768.jpg)

I love Layla's expression here, though. It's very, "This crazy rube is TRIPPIN'."

## Clashville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6941-1024x768.jpg)

Rayna tells Juliette she has to cancel the remaining dates on their tour, but instead of admitting that her voice is dunzo, she says it's because she needs to focus on her family. Juliette doesn't relate to that, so she's enraged. She has albums to sell, and arenas she needs to fill, and tweens who won't want to come to her concert if she doesn't bathe herself in body oil and glitter and sing about how dumb boys are. Frankly, that seems like a minor concession to make, because the boys she's surrounded herself with romantically ARE dumb and there's some therapy to be had. But she didn't ask me. SHE NEVER ASKS.

## Rivalville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6949-1024x768.xml)

This is an awkward grab, but it shows that Avery is now working at the Bluebird alongside Gunnar. He hears Will come in and beg for the rights to Gunnar's song, because Edgehill wants to release it; Gunnar says he'll consider it. But later, thinking he's alone, he starts playing it and Avery pops out and tells him it's going to be a hit and it's up to Gunnar WHOSE hit it is. Gunnar decides Avery is right, so he tells Will no, and Will is enraged. Farewell, sweet C plot. I shall miss your manly rasps, but we'll see you again in a week.

## Bashville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6953-1024x768.xml)

Powers Boothe is throwing a big fundraising gala in this lovely venue. It's so striking, but the problem -- for TV purposes, at least -- is that when you leave all the upper seating empty, it looks like nobody is COMING to your big gala fundraiser. I think it was supposed to feel big and important and splashy and elegant and rich, but staged thusly, instead it felt small and quaint and like half the attendees blew it off in favor of watching *Witches of East End* on their Lifetime apps.

## Hot Damnville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6954-1024x768.xml)

And HARK, Tami Taylor has whipped out her Friday Night Lights. I do think MAYBE this event could have called for doing something else with her hair, but whatever, and it probably does offset the ahOOOOOOga factor, which is a very technical insider term for WHAT HO, CLEAV. The "Nashville" producers know what America wants, and that is: Connie Britton's hair and sexy times.

## Crazville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6960-1024x768.xml)

Peggy is also letting the ladies fly. But she's ALSO wearing her "secret" engagement ring around her neck on a chain, which is the dumbest thing in the world. I'm sure she did it on purpose, but Teddy didn't think to stop her; he said he didn't know the girls would be at the party, but dude, lots of other eyeballs were there, and most people see a random diamond ring on a necklace and make assumptions. People LOVE assumptions, Teddy. YOU ARE THE MAYOR, and you are hoping to run for national office now apparently. ASSUME THAT YOU ARE SMART.

## Trioville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6964-1024x768.jpg)

Powers Boothe gives a speech about his late wife, while his daughters flank him. Tami's dress is an interesting idea but because its higher-waisted and not as tailored than [SMG's similar Golden Globes float from a few years ago](https://gofugyourself.com/golden-globes-well-played-sarah-michelle-geller-01-2012?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) (which I thoroughly enjoyed), it makes Connie Britton look like she's keeping a Uterine Secret. I can't imagine Rayna wants wombly whispers... although can we talk about how there has been no paparazzi curiosity or coverage of why she was in the car with Deacon, and what this means about her relationship with Deacon, and Deacon Deacon Deacon? DEACON.

## Dateville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6966-1024x768.xml)

Oh, hey, Deacon, thanks for taking my call. He had come by to thank his court-appointed lawyer, and yada yada yada it turns into a date, and it goes really well. And as lovely as Christina Chang is, I'm so distracted that the show tied up his Rayna relationship in such a neat premiere-episode bow that I'm starting to be afraid that Connie Britton and Chip Esten hate each other. Or CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT EACH OTHER, which would be dramz because he's married. Let's not monger that rumor.

## Hateville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6976-1024x768.xml)

Maddie sees Peggy, and the ring around her neck, and flips her teenage lid. The angrier she gets, the more Rayna's dress seems to sink, as do her spirits. I mean, at least she's not wearing a blouse and pants again. It would've been hella frustrating if she showed up in ANOTHER getup straight out of a Marshall's ad. But I can't figure out why she chose this night to -- like June -- bust out all over. Don't you sex it up for the shareholders of your record company, so they know You've Still Got It, and then tuck things in a safer place for Nashville's checkbook-wielding high society? Or is the idea that more boob = more donor dollars? Are Nashville's richest philanthropists all 13-year old boys or old pervs?

## Trapville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6980-1024x768.xml)

Tandy had a PI investigate the US Attorney's claims that Powers Boothe may have been involved in their mother's death. The PI came back with evidence suggesting he is made of lies -- her car was being followed by a Caddy not unlike his; he wasn't in Louisville as he stated until four hours after the accident; their old maid heard the mom announce she was leaving, and then died herself later. So the entire Nashville PD is about as competent as the cops on Pretty Little Liars. Nashville: A Great Place For Murder.

Anyway, Tansy subtly tests him, and he fails, so she's mad. Powers Boothe's power booth may soon get unplugged.

## Danceville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6983-1024x768.jpg)

Because no one thinks her new stuff will sell tickets, Juliette tries to reboot the cutesy portion of her set list, but she decides it and all its attendant rehearsal leggings are not right for her -- she's too old, she's moved on, and it makes no sense because she was never really a typical tween anyway so she can't even relate to these fools. But she also refuses to downsize. She wants a magic solution. It's at this point in the episode that I realized Deacon hasn't had any scenes with her, and they cut her off from Avery, so she has nobody except Glenn. This show is SO compartmentalized sometimes. One thing that Vampire Diaries and Hart of Dixie, et al, do so well is having big town events that bring everyone together, and story spins off from it. If there's a huge Nashville gala, it might be more interesting if, say, other people on the show besides Rayna are in attendance. I hate to break it to these people, but Rayna is not the most interesting person on this show.

## ARGHville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6986-1024x768.xml)

Glenn has a solution to Juliette's problem: Edgehill just stole a guy named Luke who is the biggest country singer in the world, so she can add him to the tour and open for him. She refuses to open for anyone, nor do anything else conciliatory, so basically she spends this whole episode with her Panettieres in a twist.

## Cleavageville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6984-1024x768.xml)

Speaking of which, Maddie runs away, and Rayna's chest is extremely excited by all its screen time. It is heaving with woe.

## Fungusville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6992-1024x768.jpg)

While everyone freaks out trying to find her, Maddie wanders lonely as a cloud to a gas station -- having removed her heels, and contracting several exciting new foot diseases along the way. She calls Juliette in a panic because she doesn't know where she is, despite being in possession of a cell phone which has a MAPS app, although if it's Apple Maps then that explains everything. She falls asleep at Juliette's while waiting for Rayna, who comes and has a nice but brief heart to heart with Juliette in which J tells her that Maddie really needs to talk to her mother about Deacon, and J observes Parenting In Action and gets all wistful.

## Karaokeville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_6998-1024x768.jpg)

Apparently Zoey is a former church singer, and she does have a great bluesy voice. She also doesn't look as much like Tyra Banks as she does in this particular shot, although there is a passing resemblance I suppose. Very passing. Anyway, she essentially tells a miserable Scarlett that they need to have fun -- but not in the boring ways that Scarlett LIKES to have fun. Instead, they go out and do shots, and Scarlett has her first fan encounter with some rando dude who was videotaping her from across the room because he saw her at the Opry last season, and then they get up and sing a song called "POT LEDOM is 'Top Model' Backwards" and everyone ignores that Ledom Pot, not Pot Ledom, is 'Top Model' backwards. I haven't watched ANTM in a long time, but some of the joys that show has brought will last me a lifetime.

## Truthville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7002-1024x768.xml)

Deacon and Christina Chang were about to hook up -- they had been bonding over Mutual Sad Pasts and things -- when Rayna burst in for two seconds to tell him Maddie is missing, and that Maddie has been obsessed with his songs and might come to visit him. This is the only space they've shared since the end of the premiere, and it's a shame. Their history was so rich and compelling, and well acted, and without it the show loses a step. Christina Chang is super understanding about Deacon's Sudden Daughter, and suggests to him that he'll figure out how to be a good father. I like her. I should learn her character name sometime.

## Bullville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2013/10/IMG_7005-1024x768.jpg)

And just like that, we cut to these two the next day having a gay old time with the story of how Deacon wrote one of his songs about Rayna. And Maddie is chipper and smiling and I LOVE YOU MOM and other such things that a real teen would SO not be saying right now unless it's to avoid being grounded. Rayna finishes this one wee tale and then tells Maddie that she doesn't want Maddie to run away from her, and she can come talk to her anytime about this, because they're a team. Way to put the onus on your THIRTEEN-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, Rayna. I get wanting to give her some emotional space, but seriously, girls that age are too young to be asked to drive the ship. Rayna should be sitting down with her on the regular, answering real questions and not just ones about how Deacon put her intoxicating essence into lyrics. This scene is the most ridiculous Band-Aid. It's not even a Band-Aid. It's a crude tourniquet made of cheesecloth.

## Gestureville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7007-1024x768.xml)

However, when Deacon calls Rayna to check on Maddie, his new daughter answers the phone (on the sly). They have a sweet but stilted convo about how he was worried about her and she shouldn't run off again, and she smiles and hangs up and then calls him Dad, aloud, to herself. I AM looking forward to these two getting to know each other on that level, provided the show doesn't forget that they already DO know each other, and have for years, on a "family friend who's like an uncle" level. I ASSUME they will bond through music, maybe writing and performing together. If their conversations amount to what her favorite color is and whether she's ever played Angry Birds, I will scream.

## KABLAMville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7010-1024x768.xml)

Tandy (whom I keep calling Tansy because of Hart of Dixie) gives the US Attorney all sorts of damning information on Powers Boothe, because she thinks he secretly made their mother die, which -- happening this early into the season -- either means they're writing him out, or that he totally didn't do what they think he did and ANGST. Careful, Tandy. You don't want to be sitting on the wrong side of his power booth.

## Laylaville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7014-1024x768.xml)

Juliette decides she'll put Layla Grant on her tour, as the opening act, to suck in all the tweenies. This is probably a great terrible idea. Layla is super overeager and excited, and Juliette basically calls her over, says, "Join my tour," and then slams the door in her face and goes back to pulling the wings off flies.

## MMMBopville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7017-1024x768.xml)

Daphne was mad that Maddie ran off like that, but aw, shucks, they're totally fine now that they're singing together. Maddie has them performing one of Deacon's songs. They are very talented, those Stella children. And it's a nice song, and the fact that these two real siblings clearly actually love each other and enjoy performing together gives their moments a real warmth. They're just like the Hanson brothers.

## Traumaville

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_7021-1024x768.xml)

And Rayna is listening, and tries to sing along but then Throaty Shenanigans lead her to clutch at her throat painfully. Earlier, she had told her mother's grave that she doesn't know who she is without her voice, so it's a wonderful coincidence -- such divine providence -- that the song her kids happen to be singing entreats her to remember that she's got a really good life regardless. And she does: hair, cleavage, a producer she can sleep with sometimes and not have it be a big deal, money problems from last season that magically evaporated during the break, a heart that's impervious to the emotional trauma of her car accident, and a nice kitchen. Girlfriend has it on lock.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, season 2, episode 4I've decided the show needs to realize Rayna is not the most interesting person on it anymore.![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/img_6908-1024x768.xml)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-episode-3-4-10-2013/)
