## Deacon and Tami

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0757.png)

There is no way we're hitting pay dirt this early, so obviously, this is a dream sequence. And they make it nice and passionate for us, so that the following shot is as much a buzzkill for the viewer as it was for Tami...

## Teddy

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0760.xml)

"Good morning, cherished partner. Here is a cup of coffee to help ease you into the cold reality that you are married to a man who allowed you to get those weird-ass paintings of our children that look like those collector's plates they sell on the back of magazines with 'Digest' in the title." Eric Close is cute, for sure, but for Tami, Teddy is a tall pile of Ambien next to Deacon's craggy gritty sex eyes.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0759.png)

"Y'all, my sex drive just got its license revoked."

## Tami

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0762.xml)

God bless Connie Britton for making actual faces. Here, she is complaining that Boring Teddy isn't sharing with her the boring details of how he's getting boring trounced in the polls by his opponent (Bunny from *The Wire*, whom we ALSO learn is Deacon's AA sponsor). So she agrees to play at a $1400-a-plate fundraiser at the country club, even though she hates all those people, because she's Regular. I think this love triangle would work better if Tami and Teddy EVER appeared to have any fun together, or had any chemistry. Maybe they aren't meant to, but it means I get very impatient for her to just SLEEP AROUND already and that's not very nice.

## Hayden

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0764.xml)

Meanwhile, video of Hayden shoplifting has taken the Internet by storm. It would seem she did NOT intend to get caught, despite taking what appeared to be great pains to get caught, so she's taken to moping in casual florals like she's Scarlett or something. Also, there is no way your average 23-year old singer would decorate her house this way unless she a) got rich quick and bought it furnished, or b) threw a bunch of cash at an interior designer who is about 58 and figured she'd never be home long enough to care. Both of those options seem fairly true to character, though. But that couch is really not good for post-scandal moping.

## Paparazzi

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0770.xml)

Alas, when Hayden realizes it's really hard to fall into a bag of Doritos on a white sofa, she tries to leave her place and finds the gate overrun with paparazzi. It's a good thing she lives in Nashville or else her house would be like this all the time. I'm pretty sure it looks like this at Britney's place, except they all probably have cots set up and a generator powering some refrigerators.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0774.png)

So she stays home and does a bunch of yoga instead, while Namaste-ing that she's FINE and everything will be FINE and they can just ignore it, because nobody's going to care about a dumb old theft of some nail polish. Oh, honey. You have FAR too much hair to have been born yesterday.

## McKenna

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0772.png)

Her publicist, who does not seem enthralled by being presented with her client's hindquarters during a particularly lengthy downward dog, agrees that Hayden is being ridiculous and puts her business casual clothes to good use planning a rebound tour of contrition and sartorial frumpitude.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0784.png)

So they try to restyle Hayden as, basically, Scarlett if she worked at a Don Pablo's with a nightclub attached.

## Scarlett and Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0776.png)

Meanwhile, Dr. Romano (from *ER*) directed this episode, which instantly makes me upset at its lack of deranged limb-claiming helicopters. And Scarlett and Gunnar got a songwriting deal, and for her first day at work Scarlett puts on a skirt that looks like she tied a giant flannel around her waist for a walk of shame.

## Hailey

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0780.png)

However, there is an attractive brunette there who likes the look of Gunnar's trigger, and Gunnar is thrilled that he can turn this love triangle into a quad because it's boring and extremely wet being the one doing all the drooling. Poor lad.

## Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0793.png)

They got all dolled up for a dinner with their boss -- and Lucky Spencer, and Hailey, of course, for maximum convenient awkwardness -- and Scarlett looks really pretty, and waxes delightful about how much she loves to write. But when she tries to fluff Lucky Spencer, he gets very angry with her and cuts short their evening, which makes her cry and gives Hailey a clear path to stoke Gunnar's cannon.

## Gunnar and Hailey

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0804.png)

Hallelujah! I'm so proud of Gunnar. But the strange thing about this show is that even this joyous end to his lovesick booty drought is not greeted with particular joy. He smiles, sure, but in a really serious way. Somebody needs to whoop it up, preferably with some actual whooping.

## Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0807.png)

And of course, Scarlett sees the happy couple together and realizes what happened, and shrivels inside. We also get a quickie scene with her and Deacon, just to remind everyone that he's her uncle, and basically her storyline continues to inch along: She's talented, she has a boyfriend who either isn't or just isn't getting discovered, she shouldn't hold herself back, etc. I love it when they let her sing -- she and Gunnar are great at those smoky country-noir numbers -- but they need to add a few more shades to her. Otherwise, she's just like the lead in *Blue Crush*: in need of about three pep talks per day.

## Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0840.png)

However, Scarlett DOES stand up to Avery and tell him that she deserves support, too, and he winces at his internal pain and lies that he's trying. He's really, really trying. Except for how he can't look at her or be around her when she's talking about work. Other than that, he's cloaked in sincere effort. Truly. REALLY.

## Country Club

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0788.png)

I love this picture. Tami arrives at the country club and is greeted by this passel of ladies who are all giving her that horrible look that says, "Oh, you're going to be suuuuuuch a wonderful politician's wife and we're soooooo happy to see you and we don't at aaaaaaall secretly want you to fail."

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0789.png)

Too bad for them that Tami is fluent in Patronizing.

## Kimberly Williams Paisley

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0790.png)

INCOMING: Apparently, back in the day, Kimberly and Teddy may have had a little something going on, because it's awkward when Tami realizes she's on this committee that's helping plan Teddy's fundraiser. It's going to be EVEN MORE AWKWARD when it turns out she's delegated everything to Martin Short's Fraaaanck. Wait... I think that sentence just diagnosed EXACTLY the juice this show needs.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0794.png)

Fraaaanck would never let Tami wear this dress, for one thing. He would actually go out, buy a fainting couch, wait for it to be delivered, and then pass out on it in front of her.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0799.png)

When a Fug Natoinal Tweeted me something about pink macaroni, I was SO EXCITED because I thought maybe somebody finally went full-on country crazy with the clothes. But no. Hayden's junkie mom just reached out to her by making her "favorite" pink mac, with cream cheese and ketchup, while Hayden pouts about how everyone is Tweeting her that she's a dirty shoplifter and a terrible role model. This would appear to chafe since she grew up with an ACTUAL terrible role model, whom she berates for her crappy semi-homemade cooking, and you know, if Sandra Lee randomly decided to become a heroin addict then these two ladies might have a lot of fun together.

## Hayden and mom

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0802.png)

Hayden angrily searches her mother's backpack, screaming that she's just CERTAIN her mom is trying to steal her stuff and pawn it for drug money. But all she finds in there is a tattered photo of Hayden when she was a baby, being snuggled by her mother. It's sweet, but it's also sort of awkward -- was it SUPPOSED to look like the mom passed out cold with a baby on top of her?

## Hayden and mom

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0803.png)

Hayden breaks down and cries. And it's very well acted. And it WOULD be really moving, if I didn't feel like I'd seen this already. This show has a lot of good emotional conflicts built into it, but it seems like they're playing them all every single week. Lucky is sort of a jerk! Deacon and Tami break each other's hearts with their mutual longing and inaction! Hayden's mama misses her baby! Hayden feels abandoned! Lather, rinse, apply Visine, repeat.

## McKenna

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0810.png)

McKenna the Publicist wears her most soothingly professional outfit to tell Hayden that she needs to go on Good Morning America and act really contrite, or else her tour will be canceled, because the label is furious. It seems that Hayden has put a lot of effort into concealing her actual family history, and in fact, this is when I start to wonder if McKenna's wardrobe is better at this job than she is. Because all that is going to come out ANYWAY, and isn't revealing it now a great way to flip the script on the shoplifting thing? If this is going to be a game to y'all, then know when to play the Trauma card.

## Hayden

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0812.xml)

Hayden knocks Winona Ryder and Lohan for their past offenses, by way of trying to point out that stealing a little bottle of nail polish should be forgettable. Again, this makes no sense. EVERYTHING is forever, honey. The Internet has seen to that. I get having her be intractable about making an apology, but writing her as if she is actually surprised anyone cares that a multi-millionaire ganked a $3 bottle of Sally Hansen is crazy. Of COURSE people care.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0820.png)

So Hayden puts on a blouse she would never wear, from a Mime School she would never attend, and gives a tight-lipped interview to Robin Roberts about how the shoplifting was accidental and the videographers were just sad jealous hags. But then Robin busts out some science called "reporting," through which she has learned that Hayden's mother was recently arrested for disorderly conduct. I repeat: McKenna is a terrible publicist. There is no way this wasn't going to get out; she should've had Hayden spin it for sympathy here. Stress-induced shoplifting is a way better excuse than "My hand slipped and it landed in my small purse instead of my giant shopping basket that was on my other side."

## Robin Roberts

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0822.png)

So Hayden STORMS off the set of the live interview, as Robin Roberts appears chagrined that, even in sickness, she kicks McKenna's ass professionally. And also in terms of general awesomeness. Can we discuss what a badass she is? She has to have shot this after she announced that she needed the bone marrow transplant, but before she left work to get it. It's a small addition to her workload, but an addition nonetheless. Fortunately, Fictional Robin will totally get some kind of award for making Hayden flounce away in anger.

## Tami

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0817.xml)

Over at the country club, somebody is about to put Tami in the corner.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0857.png)

And it's the men in her life. Deacon -- who supports his AA sponsor/Teddy's opponent -- is unaccountably late to the gig, Powers Boothe does his whole goading/growling thing yet again for all the same reasons, and then Teddy comes inside and decides he and Deacon need to see, so to speak, whose footlong is on the $5 menu and whose is full price. Deacon spits that Teddy is just a straw man and Teddy counters by wondering if Deacon is drinking again, and the whole thing ends with Tami between them, shouting, while they pant heavily and try to resist the urge to break into a triangular orgy.

## Powers Boothe

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0825.png)

"Grr," said Powers Boothe, with a touch of arousal. Grr-ousal.

## Kimberly Williams Paisley

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0833.png)

Kimberly Williams Paisley's behavior is as subtle as the fact that she is only dressed in black, like the color of the cloud she is carrying over Teddy's life. Nobody in Tami's loathed gossipy country-club circle would be SO obvious, because she would know that said gossips are all watching and whispering and composing complex hashtags.

## Deacon and Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0835.png)

It's Deacon and Tami's turn for a rerun: For at LEAST the third time, they have a tearful and sparse conversation that alludes to a) their latent passion, b) their overt passion, and c) their inability to act on either passion, and then buttoned with another implication that they are somehow maybe considering going their separate ways for a second, possibly.

## Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0839.png)

And then when Teddy pouts his way home, he orders Tami to fire Deacon. "I know," she says sadly. They don't look at each other. Nothing new there. Everyone's a bummer. Right now the entire city of Nashville is feeling pressure to prove that, yes, many of them actually smile multiple times a day, and even might laugh or enjoy the company of others.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0850.png)

Take Hayden, for instance. Her manager tries to quit, but she begs him to stay after admitting the shoplifting was an old trick from when she was a kid and wanted to prove -- poorly -- that nobody controlled her. It is a really dumb argument, but it's honest, so he agrees to stay and tells her to go relax with some friends. Hayden says she doesn't have any; she just has people who enjoy being seen with her. So instead she stays home and booty-calls Deacon with a mouthful of ketchup noodles, and invites him over -- presumably so they can write a song together called "Sad Pink Macaroni Clown."

## Kimberly and Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0847.png)

AND THEN. Teddy and Kimberly meet in a remote location and have a loaded conversation about how uncomfortable that whole event was, and the huge secret they're keeping from everyone, and how they'd be boned like a skeleton if anyone found out about it. SECRETS! Are they having an affair? WERE they having an affair? Will it turn out to be a misdirect, and she was just somehow involved in his shady dealings? I don't know, but it's starting to smell soapy in here. FINALLY.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, season 1, episode 4None of these episodes has quite lived up to the pilot, in terms of keeping all those pieces moving around -- and specifically forward. Everyone is bummed out; nobody is having any FUN anywhere, except for Gunnar, obviously, who had The Sex this week. But even he managed to do it with a mopey expression. Still, it's a very well-acted show, with smart musical choices, so if it would just please let its characters get a bit more CHEERFULLY or GLEEFULLY messy then I think we're in business. It's exhausting when everyone cries all the time.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0757.png)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-episode-4-11-2012/)
