## Hayden

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0941.png)

I have lost track of Hayden's various recording studios. She was in one in the pilot that was different than this; she has one in her big house that is also not this one, and then there was the time she and Deacon were standing in the middle of an acoustically questionable giant room.

## Hayden and Randy

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0945.xml)

"Hey, remember when we had sex in a broom closet? That was way more fun than sitting around while you work us to the bone because you don't want to go home and deal with your junkie mom. At the very least you should consider leaving to change, because your shirt looks something I saw on a slide in high school biology."

## Tami

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0948.xml)

"Hey y'all, I'm broke so I'm repurposing one of our old songs for a commercial and busting out the cleavage. I should wear this color all the time, right, y'all? Although the dress kinda looks like my manager bought it at Forever 21\. I should look more expensive than this, right? Reba would look more expensive than this."

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0955.png)

"ESPECIALLY if she were hawking a perfume. Or a car. Or Forever 21\. Or... what is this ad for, anyway, y'all? I see some stars here. Is it just an ad for America? Reba would DEFINITELY look expensive in an ad for America."

## Teddy and Peggy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0952.png)

I am going to TRY to call her Peggy, even though she's just Kimberly Williams Paisley to me -- I defy you to look at her and not think, "Aw, look, it's Kimberly Williams from *Father of the Bride*. Please tell me they will cast George Newburn to play her husband." But, this my peace offering to all the people out there who hate Tami/Lucky, etc. Anyway: Peggy and Teddy, it turns out, do not have a love child, and have not been riding the love train. She helped him embezzle funds to cover his losses on the Cumberland deal (bad real estate), and although they allegedly paid it back, it's still a crime. And now there is a federal probe, and NOT the sexy kind they secretly want to give each other.

## Scarlett and Gunnar

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0958.png)

Gunnar's girl Hailey tells him she wants to keep it casual, because she doesn't want his song-writing pairing with Scarlett to get messy. He pretends he doesn't know what she means, and Scarlett acts all queasy and weird around them, until her boss gives her something else to act queasy and weird about: a songwriting showcase. Some people want to hear their stuff, and maybe hire them, but they have to perform it themselves. I wonder what Scarlett will look like if she has a pregnancy scare, because "queasy and weird," though apt for that plot, have already been ridden hard.

## Hayden and bodyguard

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0960.png)

Let's talk about Bo for a minute. Bo is dreamy. Bo is awesome to Hayden. And Bo is played by an actual vet named Melvin Ray Kearney II, who has done two tours of duty in Iraq. Bless you, sir. Brave people like you are the reason people like me can sit here and blog about TV shows, among other things. Glad you are back, glad you are safe. We here at GFY HQ hope all our soldiers who are still out there in the thick of it are keeping safe and warm and healthy.

## Crack Mama

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0963.png)

Hayden, however, is more concerned with how suspiciously quiet and peaceful her house is. So she busts into mama's bedroom, and finds her passed out on the bed with booze and a man. I'm not sure how this all happened without anyone notifying her -- she lives in a gated community, for one thing, and for another, she really probably could've hired a nanny and/or a Bo 2.0 to keep tabs on her mother, which I thought was the whole point of this arrangement.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0964.png)

Hayden hurls this poor actor out on his ass, while we commend her crack mama for having really nice, muscular quads that you don't typically see on a lady who does nothing but drink and drug. Maybe she's been using Hayden's in-home gym to stave off cravings.

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0969.png)

As Hayden turns her back on the looky-loos in her gated community, all of whom happen to be out and about near her place, we see that her shirt doesn't close. I'm not sure it's SUPPOSED to close, but... it doesn't, and it looks terrible, like she's squeezing into one that's two sizes too small. Although maybe it just popped open when she Hulked out on Crack Mama's fling. Regardless, Hayden clearly needs some retail therapy to cope with all this.

## Teddy and Coleman

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0970.png)

I'm also going to try and stop calling Bunny "Bunny," because THAT one is a little specific. Now he's Coleman. Anyway, apparently Teddy randomly has a mayoral debate, but Tami is busy shooting her ad, and he's fine with that (what?), but wouldn't this be... in the evening? Live on the local news or something? People don't want to watch a debate on their lunch break, y'all. Despite Powers Boothe later claiming that Teddy did well, I thought Coleman slayed him, particularly when he pointed out that Teddy's only qualifications with money are either losing it, or inheriting it; we also learn that apparently his father was someone whose shadow looms large enough that Teddy is terrified of becoming him. So, we're getting some more Teddy layers. But there is no way he looks more mayoral than Coleman. He was shifty-eyed and jaw-clenchy, and his response to Coleman's remarks was... well, the show didn't give that to us, probably because it knew full well there was no way Teddy could come up with a suitable rejoinder, so instead we just get to assume he did fine.

## Scarlett and Lucky

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0977.png)

Scarlett, in telling Lucky Spencer about the showcase and her big break, mentions that they need an extra guitarist. He offers to do it so that she won't be so nervous, and as she gleefully celebrates and kisses him, we can all tell exactly where this is going. It will end up in Sucksville, USA, population three, where the only TV shows anyone gets are *Whitney* and anything with the word "housewives" in it.

## Lucky and Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0979.png)

And in a nifty piece of character-specific blocking, Lucky flips it around and backs HER up against the door, which could read as passion but to me suggests that he can't handle not being in the power position with her. I wish they'd made him a bit nicer in the pilot -- he so clearly got thrown at us as The Roadblock To Scarlett and Gunnar's Sweet, Pure True Love that it's tough to believe in these two people as a couple. Like, is he a potentially cheatin' cocky ass who only truly wants her now that she's spreading her wings, or does he really love her, and he's just having ego problems? I think the show now wants him to be the latter, but implied early he was going to be the former, and as a result his character is a little murky. So, even if Scarlett doesn't end up with Gunnar, it still feels like the time the show is investing in stringing along THIS coupling is time wasted because the writing is on the wall. Stained with tears. In poetic meter that conveniently has a chorus and a bridge.

## Deacon and Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0980.png)

So, the breakup so far has stuck; this is the only time Deacon and Tami have talked, and it's because he's refusing to let them rewrite one of their songs for a commercial. I don't blame him. Does he know it's potentially an ad for AMERICA? He won't back down, and so the two of them stand divided by hurt feelings and the large symbolic rod and tackle box.

## Powers Boothe and Teddy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0981.png)

I would bet a million dollars that Powers Boothe has NO IDEA what half those ardently hung pictures are even OF.

## Teddy

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0983.xml)

Teddy confesses to Powers Boothe that Peggy is freaking out about their deal being investigated by the feds. He explains the boring details -- she kept him afloat; it was illegal; they paid it back but could still get in trouble -- and Powers Boothe agrees to bury it and then pauses and promises that Teddy won't become his father. But you know that inside, Powers Boothe thinks it's totally grrrroovy that he has blackmail material on poor Teddy. I think Eric Close was good casting. He's totally cute, but can also ably play small -- as in, you can buy that he would get sucked into something stupid, be unable to claw his way out, and find himself stuck in a life he isn't controlling. Having said all that, I kind of want him to get elected mayor and become a crazy coke-snorting hedonist.

## Scarlett and Lucky and Gunnar

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_0986.xml)

The showcase goes very well, with Scarlett and Gunnar cooing adorably at each other, until Lucky gets louder and louder as he improvises with his guitar. The buzz in the room changes. Here's what I don't get about that: It's a songwriting showcase, presumably so someone else can buy the song and record it his or her own way. So surely if the people listening were enjoying the music and the lyrics right up until the guitarist got a little handsy, they could say, "We'll TAKE IT and just not use the guitar part." It's like turning them down because they don't like what Scarlett is wearing -- which would FURTHER be wrong because it's the nicest thing she HAS worn.

## Gunnar and Lucky

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0992.png)

So, Gunnar yells at Lucky, who smarms that he was just trying to make it interesting while Gunnar and Scarlett drooled all over each other. Gunnar rightly points out that when selling a love song, you have to act the part. Again, I'm confused: They're trying to play this that Lucky is jealous of their chemistry, and maybe he is, but up until now it EXCLUSIVELY felt like he was pissed off at their success, and so I thought he was trying to sabotage that on purpose so that he'd still have the upper hand. Are we turning left suddenly? I already have a terrible sense of direction so somebody please moor me.

## Crack Mama

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0991.png)

At wise Bo's suggestion -- he basically tells her that Crack Mama needs to hear the cold truth from someone else because she's convinced herself Hayden's pleas are just a judgment -- Hayden takes up Deacon on his earlier offer to help coerce her mother into rehab. Crack Mama gets all hot and bothered because he is the embodiment of craggy hotness, so she tries to flirt with Deacon and pretend she's fine, but he's like, "Lady, I made out with Hell, and it has your breath."

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_0996.png)

Oh, Bo. When Hayden's mom gives her a resentful, desperate smack before walking inside rehab, Bo rushes out of the driver's side of the car... and then vanishes. I love him so much, but that's pretty weak bodyguarding sauce.

Separately, I love that the sight of an old photograph can reduce Hayden to hysterical snorting messy tears, but she's stone-faced when her mother hauls off and slaps her across the face. No, really, that actually seems right -- because you get the sense that Hayden's been slapped around so much by this woman, figuratively and literally, that she's inured herself to the abuse, whereas memories of real maternal affection are so few and far between that they'd push her buttons harder. As much as I feel like this storyline is being a little rushed, Hayden Panettiere is doing a great job with it. But in the process we've gotten too far away from the party girl celebrity side of her character -- this show seems to only want to play one shade at a time with people.

## Deacon

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1002.png)

Deacon reveals to his sponsor, Coleman, that he confiscated pills from Hayden's mom and then didn't throw them away. He's walking the tightrope. So hotly. So sad-hotly. Shotly?

This character is, I think, the thing that *Nashville* has done the best. You TOTALLY feel for him as a talented singer/songwriter who fell in love, lost his way, lost her respect, and has spent his life trying to win both of those things back because he can't figure out how to live without her, even though he kind of HAS to. It's like all the colors they need to give to other characters have ALL been used to sketch him -- my theory is that he is the combo of actor/character the writers have the biggest a crush on, and therefore they're most inspired to give him the best stuff. Like Blair Waldorf, or Kalinda from *The Good Wife* before her terrible current *50 Shades Of Eh* storyline.

## Peggy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1003.png)

"Listen, Peggy. Stop asking me dumb questions about your past crimes. I have swept it under the rug, so just smile and act normal and go to your party dressed in what looks like a modern-day version of Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh's spring dance dress. And if you think I am not the type of man to watch 90210 reruns on SoapNet, THINK AGAIN. You don't think those wood paneled walls in my office are solid, do you? There's at least three TVs and a set of nuclear codes hidden behind the push of a button."

## Scarlett

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1008.png)

So, FINALLY, Scarlett gets mad at Lucky. But it's not for being a dillwad who can't handle having a successful lady -- I suppose she sort of already covered that, but it was way more overt and damaging this week. No, instead she rails at him for being too jealous of her and Gunnar to see that she, repeatedly, over and over, always [choo-choo-choooooses her](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%5FLove%5FLisa?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), because she is this show's emotional Ralph Wiggum.

## Tami

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_1013.xml)

Tami gets a call in the middle of the night. Collect. From prison. Deacon got heckled while singing at the Bluebird, then picked a fight with the dude outside because, presumably, he was substituting rage and adrenalin for actual substances. But she refuses the charges and when Teddy asks who it was, she says hollowly, "Nobody." It's very sad. Partly because you can tell it brought her back to the day she had to shove him into rehab, but partly because I really, really, really want her and Deacon to get naked in the same room at the same time. It's good business to make us wait for that, but oh, the delicious, soapy agony.

## Tami

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1018.png)

So while Tami looks all refreshed and gorgeous and pleased with herself, because for the first time in eons she wrote her own song and her manager actually LIKES it...

## Deacon

![](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/content/files/www-gofugyourself-com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nimg_1015.xml)

... Deacon is getting bailed out of jail, with a shiner, by Hayden in one of her thirteen cars. He gives up his fight about his and Tami's song, and then he and Hayden sit down and talk about letting things go, and she fills him in on everything that he missed on *The Voice*, and he's all, "What? [Cee Lo's Prince costume looked more like if Earth, Wind, and Fire took up piracy](https://nbcthevoice.tumblr.com/post/35101733541/youll-be-the-first-modern-day-pirate-ceelo?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)? And Christina wore a bejeweled head-barnacle? They have GOT to get DirecTV in the drunk tank."

## Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1020.png)

Hayden moves on by ditching the house that looks like her grandmother furnished it, and into a cold, empty vault of a modern home that she can decorate with stuff that's all metal and plastic and hip and costs $5,000 apiece despite being completely uncomfortable.

## Teddy and Peggy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1021.png)

And Teddy and Peggy meet for a giggly nighttime rendezvous where they celebrate burying their secrets. There are some hand squeezes that are, presumably, completely innocent -- except that you know one of them, at least, secretly wants to shag the other -- but it's not going to look that way...

## ZING

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2012/11/nIMG_1023.png)

... when the covert pictures are released to whomever hired this person. My theory? Powers Boothe, because he needs stuff to hold over everyone's heads. But it's only REALLY juicy if she writes his biography and then hacks into his e-mail. Ahem.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, season 1, episode 5Let's pre-game for tonight's new episode by reviewing last week's: Scarlett FINALLY gets a tiny bit of a spine, albeit for slightly off reasons; Teddy remains pretty but dim; and we get LOTS of fisticuffs.
