## Noshville

Juliette is using all her non-Cadence hours to cook breakfast for Emily and Glenn, to welcome Team Barnes back into existence. And she doesn't waste time asking them what the next step is for resurrecting her career -- via recording, not touring. I am a LITTLE tired of Juliette talking about her career because that's all we got after she had the baby, but I also get the urgency, and for the moment it's still being tagged with commentary that time with Cadence is more important and she wants a way to have both. I agree. Have it all, Juliette. Including the breakfast.

## Bangsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-4.jpg)

Malaylaficent is Luke's opener on the tour that starts tonight, because EVERYTHING has to have a pressing time element, and Avery still has not agreed to be her bandleader. Glenn has arranged for it to be filmed, though, and he's excited about that. Maybe they can just get Kinko's to make a cardboard cutout of Avery.

## Coffeeville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-3.jpg)

My love for the male friendships on this show still knows no bounds. Avery says he's wary of taking the job with Layla because of Cadence, and Will thinks that's bonkers; Will, in turn, has discovered he hates online dating apps and isn't sure how to meet people who don't just want a bang. I feel like, enjoy the bangs WHILE you're trying to figure out how to meet a lasting partner. Don't cut off your bang supply! I mean, please bang responsibly, but you know.

## Whoopsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-19.jpg)

This very cute backup singer is effusive with Will about his album, and Will overheard him talking about breaking up with "Riley" and how he wants something more serious and lasting. Will calls Avery for a very cute conversation in which he asks, "How do you know if a guy is gay?" And Avery is like, "...," before suggesting Will should just ask him out and see. He does, and the guy says yes, but OF COURSE turns out to be straight (Riley is his band manager or something) and then lamely offers to fix Will up with his gay cousin. Will is good-natured about it, because Will -- ever since that time he ran up a hill full of hilarious rage -- is very good-natured about things lately in general. But he's clearly embarrassed. Maybe this dude will decide he MIGHT be gay, and the shoe will be on the other foot for Will in terms of dating someone who isn't sure what's up. Or, more likely, he just filled a plot hole for the week and we'll never see him again.

## Chemistryville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-5.jpg)

Juliette and Avery have a total Moment while he's handing her their sleeping daughter, and it causes me to scream, "KISS RIGHT NOW KISSSSSSS DO IT FOR PRINCE," and Avery to blurt out that he's going on tour with Layla. Juliette is like WHAAAAT but she handles it very maturely and supportively, even as you can tell that inside she's like, "I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO KISS WHAT ARE YOU EVEN SAYING TO ME NOW."

She also offers him Emily's services as a tour nanny, which he accepts gratefully. Someone MIGHT want to call Emily. What if she had a hair appointment booked?

## Sadzville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-6.jpg)

Maddie has run away. Daphne feels like it's all her fault, because she tattled on the illicit gig, but Deacon assures her that MADDIE is the only one responsible for Maddie's decisions. Daphne is still depressed that Maddie isn't returning any of her texts. I think Daphne should maybe burn down Cash's house?

## Spaville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-12.jpg)

Autumn is hitting on Gunnar HARD -- she invites him to New York with her during their break, for example, to meet his idol James Taylor -- and he deflects it politely. So she turns her attention to Scarlett, who feels like she got off on the wrong foot with Autumn and thus is delighted by a spa day with her. Autumn asks if anything is going on with Gunnar, and Scarlett's answer is that there ALWAYS will be something on the surface, but that they've agreed to ignore it for the sake of the band. Autumn announces that this is GREAT and SMART, presumably so that she will not have any roadblocks on the path to the reptile exhibit in Gunnar's private zoo.

## Schemeville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-20.jpg)

And THEN, later, Gunnar tells Autumn he isn't going to New York with her because he needs to focus on the band and look out for Scarlett, and they're on each other's team, blah blah blah. Autumn uses this to plant a very nasty little seed: She says she hopes Scarlett is looking out for him, too, because the trouble with being in a duo is "one always outshines the other." Then she kisses him on the cheek, and Scarlett naturally sees him leaving the room and wiping the mark off his face. She is crestfallen.

## Faceville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-8.jpg)

I can't even remember what was happening here. I just know Hayden looks REALLY GOOD. This hair suits her. It's what I wish my hair was doing, instead of... whatever curly mischief it's up to for real.

## Videoville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-7.jpg)

Rayna blocks Deacon from going to Cash's to find Maddie -- best move she's made in weeks, frankly. Keep Deacon away from people who might cause him to feel things other than sexual passion, because apparently that is the only feeling he understands how to handle. But Rayna does go instead, and while Maddie isn't there (well, she IS, but she's hiding successfully), Cash does wave the video of Deacon in Rayna's face. Rayna loyally says she doesn't have to justify Deacon's behavior to anyone, and Cash is a brat. No surprise there.

## Jumpsuitville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-10.jpg)

I don't know who decided to put a black lace jumpsuit on this nice young singer, but IT'S REAL BAD. I had a hard time getting a shot that showed off that it's pants, but it is. It does not scream 'young' or 'fresh,' particularly. It DOES sort of scream, "Jennifer Morrison goes to TCAs."

## Glareville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-11.jpg)

I don't know what Juliette hates more: the outfit, or the fact that Layla is on stage with Avery and that -- like Hercules Mulligan before them -- they're up in it, lovin' it.

## Emilyville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-14.jpg)

She goes home and asks Emily if Avery and Layla are seeing each other, and Emily knows nothing. Juliette sighs that it's all going to be okay, and she needs to learn to let go even though she isn't ready, and them accepts a hug while saying she's SO LUCKY that Emily will be there to spy on them and report back. What you're seeing is Emily's reaction to that, which is perfection.

## Yayville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-17.jpg)

We ALSO get Rayna looking for Maddie at Juliette's, and sobbing on her doorstep. This yields a very nicely played, calm scene in which both women talk about how to handle it when someone is pushing you away -- how far do you let them push you, when do you let them go, etc. Rayna's response: "You don't." So I guess she feels like Powers Boothe let her go without a fight. It's just nice to see these characters connect again. I wish it happened more often.

## Riffville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-13.jpg)

Don't get too attached to Riff Bell. I guess he Lamar Odom'd himself, and despite being a longtime family friend, Luke's reaction is, "When can he come back and perform?" LUKE. You're with his weeping wife. Have a little sensitivity, you dung loaf.

## Returnville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-21.jpg)

And as people predicted last week, Juliette has the idea to step in on Luke's tour (as she was the original act anyway). She celebrates this by coming out on-stage to tell the crowd while wearing a very Kardashian bodystocking that means she can't really side-eye Layla's jumpsuit., Juliette says that while she's not performing that night, starting tomorrow they'll be seeing a lot of her. Yeah except not this PARTICULAR crowd, as it will be a different group, because that's how concerts work. It's kind of a dick move to shop up and be like, "Nope, not singing for you, but EVERYONE ELSE WHO ORIGINALLY BOUGHT A TICKET TO SEE ME AND LUKE MONTHS AND MONTHS AGO WILL ACTUALLY GET WHAT THEY PAID FOR!!!!!" (In fairness, they did hear Thomas Rhett instead, who apparently is a thing in real life. He's cute.) (Also talented. And still cute.)

## Poutville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-22.jpg)

Juliette sweetly purrs to Avery and Layla, "Now I can see Cadence ALL THE TIME," or somesuch, and they're all flabbergasted. Even Glenn appears not to have known, and Layla in particular seems panicky that she's going to lose ground. Methinks someone is about to turn up the crazy.

## Argumentville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-15.jpg)

Rayna and Deacon have a huge fight, in which he insists he did NOTHING wrong at the club, and she points out that she understands -- and might have done the same thing -- but that HE needs to accept that from Maddie's point of view it was scary, because she already has issues with his temper, and that it's not about blaming Deacon so much as it is understanding what's influencing Maddie's frame of mind. Good for YOU, Rayna. Deacon deflates (and later, when he tries to give Frankie a hard time about Cash, has to endure Frankie smugly asking him if he IS sure he has nothing to apologize for) and agrees they just need to get Maddie home safe.

Rayna also has a nice moment where she mentions HER running away from her father at 16 and never being close with him again. This also helps break Deacon a little.

Later, he handles this by sitting outside Cash's house in a car in the dark, which isn't creepy AT ALL, although it is how he finds out that Maddie is still there. Fortunately, he calls Rayna and actually waits for her to arrive. Maybe he's learning. MAYBE.

## Sonyvile

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-9.jpg)

Maddie complains that her parents are a roadblock to her life, and Cash notes that they DID at least get her a record deal. Maddie snittily says that they only did that to keep her from signing with Sony, so of course Cash happens to have a connection and is calling over there to find out if the deal is still on the table. And it is; they want her to be the next Taylor Swift. Maddie is enraged that her parents STILL are a roadblock because of a) her contract, and b) her age, and you will not at all be surprised that Cash has a suggestion for this.

## Slamville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-23.jpg)

So when Deacon and Rayna show up, Maddie announces that she knows about [the old Edgehill deal they barred her from](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-recap-season-3-episode-13-02-2015/) \-- I forgot they never told her about that, as it was a product of hookers and blackmail -- and Rayna tries in vain to point out that Maddie does NOT know the whole story behind that, but between that and Sony and her teenager-ness, Maddie says she's met with a lawyer and has a great case for emancipation. She slams the door in their faces, and as Deacon pounds on it fruitlessly, Rayna breaks down -- because this is her worst fear, and her life is replaying itself with her on the other side.

I must give kudos to the show for this: As much as Maddie is being a brat, she's being given VERY realistic teenage feelings, and I think the build to this moment has been long and slow but totally concrete. This doesn't feel like a twist they just came up with three months ago; it plays like we've been headed in this direction, inevitably, for years, no matter what Rayna did. And Rayna clearly is afraid of that, too. Bravo, show.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, S4 E16, "Didn't Expect It To Go Down Like This"Surprise! My jet lag is not bad, so I was able to bang out this recap in advance of tomorrow's new episode. Juliette Barnes's hair has never looked better; Layla Grant's has never looked worse. If Avery judges by that, then this love triangle will be over before it starts. (That's not a spoiler, by the way. The love triangle is still speculative.)![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/04/nashville-recap-season-4-episode-16-2.jpg)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-recap-s4-e16-didnt-expect-it-to-go-down-like-this-04-2016/)
